Senior Pastor The Rev. Dr. John G. Hamilton Dear friends in the Lord, I have some good news and bad news. The good news- our four year old grandson has two new pets. The bad news- they are stink bugs. He named them Leonardo and Michelangelo, after two of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a team of turtles that emerges from the sewers of New York City to fight evil. Who knows from where these two stink bugs emerged? More good news and bad news. One of the stink bugs died overnight- good news for us, bad news for Jamie and the bug. It was Michelangelo. Don t ask me how Jamie knew. He just did. It is a reminder that we live in a world packed with good news and bad news. Every day. That is the world we live in a world created good by our loving God, a world infected with sin and evil because of our sin and the reality of the Evil One. Each day we awake to good news- we are awake and alive! And we awake to bad news from the national and world news to the latest hurts and struggles in our families and friends, in our bodies and souls and relationships. Good news bad news. Ah, and then there is THE GOOD NEWS. That is what Bethany is all about. We are a people of the good news that comes from God in Jesus Christ. In Christ, God came to be with us, to show us his heart and soul that God is love. In Christ, God came to die for us, to show us that, yes, God himself would die that we would live. In Christ, God came to rise for us, giving us the living hope of resurrection in the midst of the good and bad news of life. In the Spirit, God gives us his empowering and guiding presence in our journey through the good and bad news of our world. In the Spirit, God has shaped us into the people called Bethany Presbyterian Church. And in this community called Bethany, God has called us to trust in Jesus, love like Jesus, grow in Jesus, and bring others to Jesus.to receive it into our hearts and lives and to share it with others and the world. We are blessed to be a blessing. That is what Lent is about- to follow Jesus to the cross and then on Easter to discover the empty tomb and the risen Christ. To discover He is risen! Lent at Bethany begins with a supper and service on Ash Wednesday, March 5. We continue our journey using the Psalms and accompanying New Testament passages to guide us to the cross and the risen Christ. Please join us on this glorious journey and discover how the cross transforms all our news into grace. We live in a world of good news and bad news and THE GOOD NEWS. See you on these Sundays of Lent. See Inside on Page 2. Blessings, John Hamilton ***Please see inside about some very exciting news for Bethany this time of the year: the Mission Sunday and very special speaker on March 3, the classes for those who are sensing the call to become members of Bethany, and the D-Groups.

Page 2 From your Associate Pastor... Rev. Robbie Ytterberg One, Two, Three Jump into a D-Group What is it about the number three? Have you ever noticed how many stories use it? Three Musketeers, Three Little Pigs, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Golidilocks and the Three Bears, Three Blind Mice... There is something powerful in the number three. Perhaps it comes from who God is, three in one; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Or perhaps it is because one is the loneliest number and two can be as bad as one. Whatever the reason, it seems that there is great potential and power in three. Let s add one more to the list of potential packed three s: the 3 P s of D-Groups (short for Discipleship Groups not the most creative but descriptive): 3 People à men or women meeting once a week wherever is most natural 1 Purpose à to become more like Jesus as we follow Him and share Him with others 3 Paths à to be intentionally open to God s plan: Trusting relationships Listening to God Responding to the Good News As we come into Lent, we strive to be open to the movement of God in our lives, we try to be open to how He may lead us, and long to grow as we consider the miracles of Passion Week and Easter. During Lent this year, will you consider joining a D- Group and intentionally make space for God? Allow Him to work through the 3 P s of a D-Group. This is a great chance to grow with others who are longing to grow in Jesus as well. A clear guide will be provided for you group meetings (available March 2) so you can feel confident you know what to do. If you are not sure or have questions about D-Groups, there is more information available on the website or please contact me (robbie@bethanypresby.org or 412-221-5132 x202). Mission Sunday March 2, 2014 God is on the move! He is working through Bethany Church, through you, to bring His love and good news in Jesus Christ to the lost, hurting, and broken. On Sunday, March 2, 2014 the Mission Team will be guiding us in a day of celebration, reflection, dreaming and action! You will not want to miss this. As we gather in worship we will praise God for His saving and life transforming grace that calls and compels us into a life on mission. Then after the services, in the Welcome Center, teams from our various mission trips and projects will be available to testify to what God is doing through the efforts, to answer your questions, and to give you the opportunity to join in! Finally, there will be a Bi-centennial Table where you can share and write down your Holy Spirit inspired dreams of how to reach our community with the love and good news of Jesus. We are truly Blessed to Be a Blessing and this year we are Celebrating our Roots by Serving our Community. So, start thinking and praying about how God would have us radically bless our community this year. No idea or dream too big or too small! Peace in Christ- Robbie Ytterberg

Page 3 Musical Notes by John Henninger Invitations Holy Week and Easter The Music Ministry of Bethany Church has several opportunities for those interested in making music to the Glory of God. Consider joining us for special services throughout Holy Week and Easter. The Bethany Choir would love to add some voices to our celebrations on Palm Sunday and Easter, April 13 and April 20 this year. This invitation extends to senior high youth as well. We will be singing Handel s Hallelujah Chorus on Easter along with other special selections. If you would like this chance to sing without a full commitment to the year-round choir, speak with me or come to our rehearsals on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 until 8:30. We will begin rehearsing Easter music March 12. Come and make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Alumni Choir One of the ways we plan on celebrating the 200 th anniversary of Bethany Presbyterian Church is by assembling an Alumni Choir. If you have sung in the choir before, even for just a few weeks or for special seasons (Christmas, Easter, the Advent Cantata are examples) we want you to participate in the Alumni Choir. The choir will sing on one Sunday in October. Let s fill the chancel that day with former and current choir members, and celebrate the blessings we ve been given and the blessings we are called to give in His name. Although October seems quite distant, we are going to start assembling names and contacting former choir members soon. Plan to say YES to the Alumni Choir!

A Voice for Ministry written by Lisa Jo Colwell Page 8 John 3:16 New International Version (NIV) 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. What is your response when people reject the Jesus who you love? Recently in the adult Sunday school class that I have the privilege to teach (The Wired Word) our topic was American Atheists tell Super Bowl fans that prayer doesn t work. That was a very tough subject to approach mainly because the people that were present in class, as well as our friends connected by the internet have remarkable testimonies of how God has worked in lives, their lives. So the bold statement by the American Atheist President, David Silverman, who declares that "prayer is a superstition", was a tough statement to swallow for us, the believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. At first, as a group, we felt a slow burn from the pit of our stomachs up to our throats. Then we stepped back, and assessed the entire article that was part of our curriculum that particular Sunday morning. Our The Wired Word (TWW) class takes current news items and we read the Bible to see what God s Holy Word has to say about the featured subject at hand. Our dear friend Rev. Kay Day, a missionary in Rwanda, Africa is part of our class via the internet. Rev. Kay gave me permission to share that her experience is that when issues of life and death come up, even atheists pray. An atheist s lack of belief in prayer does not negate the truth of God s work. Thank you Rev. Kay for sharing your foundational thoughts on this issue. We chose to have the empathy of love for David Silverman and his group of atheists. Read John 3:16 (above) and you can depict that God has love for people, enough love to give Jesus Christ in exchange for our very lives. We agreed among ourselves that we enjoy the peace that comes by prayer, and we like the stability of our faith in God Who we choose to believe is in control, no matter what the circumstances of life look like. We refuse to argue, and we do not accept any belittling statements of people who may choose to reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We like having God with us as we walk through each day of our earthly lives. We like having hope for the future of our glorious home in heaven. It is good to have stability and something wholesome and good to look forward to in our days on earth. Jesus loved us when we were unlovable, so with Jesus as our Precious Example, we delight in our mission being to trust in Jesus, love like Jesus, grow in Jesus, and bring others to Jesus. Our world has plenty of hurt in it. It has been said that hurting people hurt people. Would you choose to be a follower of Jesus who reaches out to hurting people? One of my very good friends recently stated that love is constructive. Let us constructively be part of this world s solution by loving all people the way that we would most like to be loved. May the world s peace and love begin with me. Thank You Sovereign God. Amen. Would you dare to embrace this prayer?

Page 9 SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES FOR ADULTS Wired Word 2013-2014 (Bethany Room): Every week this class will engage with the hot button current events and discuss what God s word has to say to us in the midst of them. Page 11 Bethany Presbyterian Church is celebrating our bicentennial this year! 200 years of being blessed to be a blessing. Keep an eye open for the many upcoming celebrations and events planned throughout the year. Need Scrip? Stop at the Welcome Center after worship or at the office during the week and purchase a card(s) for grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, home improvement, etc. If we don't have a card in stock you can purchase a scrip card for Giant Eagle or Shop n Save, then purchase a gift card from the grocery store and receive fuel perks from the store. This is the easiest fundraiser you will ever participate in because it doesn't cost you anymore than you already spend. Thank you for supporting the mission work of the church through this program. R E S P I T E C A R E In this day and age of working and scattered families there should be someone you and your family can turn to for help when family is not available. You can turn to your church family. We can cook a meal, shop, drive or just visit for a few hours to give your family or caregiver a break. We re not a permanent or long term solution but we can help. We are a compassionate, dependable and responsible group and we will be sensitive to your needs. Let us help you recover and remain independent for as long as possible. We cannot take the place of your family, but we can put their minds at ease knowing that you are being assisted and are safe, independent and happy. For more information, or questions about how we can help please call Margie Smith at 412-221-3730.
