Prayer God of grace and glory, you call us to be your people, faithful and courageous. As your beloved Son embraced his mission in the waters of baptism, now inspire us with the fire of your Spirit to join in his transforming work. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen. The Peace The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you. You are invited to share the peace of Christ with those around you * VU 332 The Church s One Foundation The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word; from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. 'Mid toil and tribulation and tumult other war, she waits the consummation of peace for evermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. - 3 - Yet she on earth hath union with God the three in one, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Sacrament of Baptism and Reception of New Members (see insert) * VU 703 In the Bulb There is a Flower In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there's a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There's a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there's a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. - 4 -
Prayer of Illumination Scripture Reading Musical Offering Message Transforming Genesis 1:1-2:4a Train Up a Child * VU 240 Praise My Soul Praise, my soul, the God of heaven, glad of heart your carols raise; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, should sing God's praise. Praise the Maker all your days! Praise God for the grace and favour shown our forebears in distress; God is still the same forever, slow to chide and swift to bless. Sing our Maker's faithfulness! Like a loving parent caring, God knows well our feeble frame; gladly all our burdens bearing, still to countless years the same. All within me, praise God's name! Linda Edgar Frail as summer's flower we flourish; blows the wind and it is gone; but, while mortals rise and perish, God endures unchanging on. Praise the high eternal one. Angels, teach us adoration, you behold God face to face; sun and moon and all creation, dwellers all in time and space. Praise with us the God of grace! Life and Work of the Community Offering Prayer and Gathering Serving Out of your abundance, O God, we receive the gift of life. Now grow in us a generous spirit, so our lives may be transformed through giving. Amen. *Offering Response For the Gift of Creation VU 538 For the gift of creation, the gift of your love, and the gift of the Spirit by which we live, we thank you and give you the fruit of our hands. May your grace be proclaimed by the gifts that we give. - 5 - - 6 -
Prayers of the Community The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. * VU 274 Your Hand, O God, has Guided Your hand, O God, has guided your flock from age to age; the wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page. Our forebears owned your goodness, and we their deeds record; and both to this bear witness: Through many days of darkness, through many scenes of strife, the faithful few fought bravely to guard your people's life. Their gospel of redemption, sin pardoned, earth restored, was all in this enfolded: And we, shall we be faithless? Shall hearts fail, hands hang down? Shall we evade the conflict and cast away our crown? Not so: in God's deep counsels some better thing is stored; we will maintain, unflinching, Your mercy will not fail us, nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, the victory shall be won; and then, by earth and heaven, your name shall be adored, and this shall be our anthem: Blessing Postlude Your heralds brought glad tidings to greatest as to least; they bade them rise, and hasten to share the heavenly feast. And this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming - 7 - - 8 -
