Page 2 ~ From The Pastor~ Rev. Dr. William T. Newkirk, Sr. Oak City News Another New Year is knocking on our door! This is perhaps as good a time as any to renew our commitment to the Lord and our service to Oak City Baptist Church. Some time ago, I read an article with a great deal of humor concerning church folk. See if you can relate to the following, or if you know of anyone who might? To make it possible for everyone to attend church next Sunday, we are going to have a special No Excuse Sunday. Here is what we ll do: Cots will be placed in the foyer for those who say, Sunday is my only day to sleep in. There will be a special section reserved with lounge chairs for those who feel that our pews are not comfortable enough. Eye drops will be available for those with tired eyes from watching TV late Saturday night or being on their computer all day. We will have steel helmets for those who claim, The roof would cave in if I ever go to church. Blankets will be furnished for those who find the church too cold and fans for those who say it is too hot. Score cards will be available for those who wish to list the hypocrites in attendance. Relatives and friends will be invited and in attendance for those who can t go to church because they are expecting guest to arrive. We will distribute Stamp Out Stewardship buttons for those who feel that the church is always asking for money. One section will be devoted to trees and grass for those who like to seek God in nature. Doctors and nurses will be in attendance for those who plan to be sick on Sunday. The sanctuary will be decorated with both Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies for those who have never seen the church without them. Hearing aids will be provided for those who can t hear the sermon, and cotton for those who say the preacher is too loud. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR, from my family to yours! May God bless us all throughout the year 2017! Pastor Newkirk

Page 4 Youth On The Move By Glenda D. Sandlin Oak City News Give me a F, give me a A.., give me a L.., give me a C.., give me a O.., give me a N.., give me a S What you got - FALCONS! say it again FALCONS! That s right Oak City Baptist Church youth on September 24, 2016 found themselves over at a Saint Augustine's University Football game. We had a makeshift tailgating party in our fellowship hall cooked by our own Deacon Richard Jones consisting of of hotdogs, cheese burgers, baked beans, chips, drinks and all the trimmings. Our attention was on the main event. After loading up along with saying a prayer, twenty four youth and adults were off to the George Williams football stadium over on the other side of town where our Pastor was waiting. As we anxiously arrived and entered into the stadium, all eyes were on the game. What an exciting game! The fans were standing up and sitting down all throughout the game. The quietest time was when we wanted to ensure that what the referees were saying was in line with our individual opinions and if not, we let them have it. Of course, we did this from the sidelines. If only the referees could hear it. With only a few seconds left in the game and Lincoln University lined up on the first yard line, the mighty Falcons defense got the job done. Congratulations! A great time was had by all.

Volume 12, Issue 4 Etiquette Training Workshop for Young Ladies and Young Men By Glenda D. Sandlin Page 5 Oak City Baptist Church held an Etiquette Training Workshop for young ladies and young men on November 5 th. The etiquette training was focused on basic etiquette skills to help the youth learn how to navigate dining, polite behavior, courteous conversations, and proper attire (ties). The attendance was great with eighteen youths: ten young men and eight young ladies. The opening prayer was led by Deacon Batts. Cameron Clark read the scripture: Proverbs 22: 6 (NKJV) Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. The training consisted of the youth having to introduce themselves with confidence (head high, spoken clearly so everyone could hear, and eye to eye contact), give definitions for etiquette and manners. They also read scriptures from the Bible related to good manners or behaviors. Young ladies had to demonstrate correct ways to sit in a chair when wearing a short dress. Young men had to learn how to tie a tie and pull out a chair for a lady. The training was conducted by Sister Batts who taught Etiquette and Manners and worked with the young ladies. Trustee Sams and Deacon Batts worked with the young men on tying a tie and pulling out a chair for the ladies. Sister Karen Bethea Shields taught Table Etiquette, how to set a table, and using the correct utensils when eating. Youth had to correctly place their utensils on the table for the place setting. Youth had to demonstrate the correct way to cut their meatballs with a knife and fork. It was a great learning experience for the youth and so much fun for everyone. This training involved the participation of many people such as the planning by Sister Glenda Sandlin, printing of program by Deacon Jones, and servers of the food by Sister Terrye Fish, Sister Cheryl Stewart (Peaches), Sister LaShanda Pettis, and Sister Theresa Curtis. Also, we want to thank Deacon Jones for cooking the delicious meatballs. The youth gave them high marks! Etiquette is a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group.

Page 6 Adoption and Foster Care Ministry By Veronica B. Smith Oak City News It s been a busy year for the Adoption & Foster Care Ministry. We continue to work with Wake County Human Services and Choices for Children to meet the needs of the children. The love and enthusiasm of these two groups for the children of Wake County is contagious. We work with WCHS year round on several projects. The below items are just a few: 1. Book Bags & Supplies: This usually occurs in the month of July & August, but keep in mind that we collect them all year. 2. Luggage: The response has been great and the children are all smiles. Keep them coming! 3. Undie Sunday: There is always a need for new t- shirts, socks and underwear. They are needed any time of the year. This is an inexpensive way to give. 4. Thanksgiving: Wake County Human Services supplies the name of a family, we adopt that family usually for Thanksgiving & Christmas. The family receive can goods & all the trimmings for Thanksgiving. 5. Christmas: The Adoption & Foster Care Ministry works with the Missionary Ministry to ensure a Merry Christmas for the children at WCHS & Passage Home. The Angel Tree Wish List makes it possible to grant that child s wish. Raise Hope and Foster Dreams: Become a Foster Care Parent Foster Care is a temporary living arrangement for children who are unable to live at home with their parents. The children, who range in age from infants to teenagers, have all experienced abuse, neglect, difficult situations or some type of trauma. Foster parents play a vital role in understanding the needs of children during these difficult times. With the help of Foster parents, intervention and nurturing can make all the difference to a child in need. Foster parents must be licensed and meet the following requirements: At least 21yrs of age. Legal Wake County resident. Married or single. Stable home & income. Have adequate sleeping space for a child. Able to read and write. Submit to criminal checks, fingerprints and provide references. Provide the basics of life for a child. Work in partnership with the agency. Shared parenting with the birth parents. Complete 30 hours of required state training-model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (MAPP). MAPP is designed to help you learn more about foster care and the needs of the children. This information will help you make an informed decision if fostering is right for you and your family. If you are a couple, both adults must attend the training. Although foster parents are volunteers, they receive a small monthly stipend to help reimburse the costs of raising a child. Volume 12, Issue 4 OCBC Prayer Ministry Update By Chiquita F. Douglas Page 9 The Prayer Ministry, under the leadership of Brother Joel Gamble, has had a very active year of service. Members of this ministry continue to actively pray for our church family and individuals within our communities. Throughout the year, reports of answered prayers have been received for healing, improved family relationships, employment situations, and a heightened awareness of the power of God. Church s second Annual Prayer Workshop. Participants will have to search the scriptures, and learn about the power and importance of prayer to all of life s situations. Listen up for workshop dates and topics. Prayer Ministry As we reflect on the activities of 2016, may we be mindful of key reminders from the War Room movie night presentation: The importance of having a prayer partner / warrior in our circle. The necessity of having a relationship with God. The importance of living a life that is directed by God. Success is not measured by the trappings of perceived success (large houses, cars, money) Importance of living life through the eyes of a child Plans are currently underway for Oak City Baptist but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. Acts 6:4 (NKJV)
