TODAY S SCRIPTURES First Lesson Isaiah 53:10-12 Yet it was the Lord s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Psalm of the Day From Psalm 143 P O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy: C In your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief. P Do not bring your servant into judgment: C For no one living is righteous before you. P I spread out my hands to you: C My soul thirsts for you like a parched land. P Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love: C For I have put my trust in you: P Show me the way I should go: C For to you I lift up my soul. P Teach me to do your will, for you are my God: C May your good Spirit lead me on level ground. P In your unfailing love, silence my enemies: C Destroy all my foes, for I am your servant. Second Lesson Hebrews 4:9-16 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace 3

with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Sermon Text Mark 10:35-45 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. Teacher, they said, we want you to do for us whatever we ask. What do you want me to do for you? he asked. They replied, Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory. You don t know what you are asking, Jesus said. Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared. When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. Jesus called them together and said, You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. DAILY BIBLE READINGS FOR HOME DEVOTIONS OCTOBER 22-27 The Book of Proverbs circulates around WISDOM; Christian wisdom is our conscience founded on God s Word and taking His Word for it in all areas of life. Let s read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest these Words of WISDOM. Mon Are you a parent? God is concerned about how you serve your child s welfare. Check out 1:8-19; 2:1-9. Christian parenting may include tough-love correction--13:24; 19:18; 22:6,15; 23:13-14; 29:15-17. If you are a son or daughter, how you react is crucial: 2:10-3:8; also chapters 4, 5, 6, and 7. Tues Where does Christian wisdom begin? It begins by staying close to God: 3:1-7; 13:13-18; 14:26-27; 22:17-21; 30:5. In ch. 16 God and Solomon warn: Watch your attitude (vv.1-22; 28:26; 29:23), watch your mouth (vv.23-24), and watch your actions (vv.25-33)! In other words, watch your step! Wed Wisdom speaks her piece in chapter 8, vv. 4-36. She deserves our devotion (12:1-3), for she serves us well from this world into the next (19:8; 23:17-18). Indeed, Wisdom is our best friend on whom we don t turn our back (1:20-33). She advises us how we use our voices (15:1-2,23; 17:27-28), how we choose our friends (12:26) and how we serve them (17:17). Thurs God advises us to test our hearts (20:6) in all our doings (ch. 21). How do we get along with difficult neighbors (9:7-12; 11:12-13; 15:1-2; 20:19) even when we get dragged into court (25:8-13,21-22; 31:8-9)? Fri God is concerned about how His children cope with lust (ch. 5, 6:20-29; 7:6-27) and alcohol addiction (20:1; 23:19-21,29-35; 31:4-7). Solomon had seen how such addictions destroy lives and ruin souls. Lord, have mercy! Sat Are you hungry for life? Then open your heart to your Father s loving guidance in chs. 27, 28, 29, and 30. If you are a student of nature, you will appreciate the insights of ch. 30:24-28. In summary, in the Book of Proverbs God contrasts godliness with ungodliness, self-serving stands in contrast with self-sacrifice, and all sorts of wickedness, perversity, and ego are overshadowed by decency, kindness, and consideration of others. Even after a sketchy review such as this, we find ourselves agreeing that God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart. We don t know everything Solomon authored, for he spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five. Also he spoke of trees, of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon (1 Kings 4:29-34). We too have come from afar to hear God s Wisdom and His Wisdom-Word makes us richer than many kings. Praise the Lord! 6
