FACE OF GLORY BY: E. E. BROOKS Exodus 33:11 And the LORD spake unto Moses FACE to FACE, as a man speaketh unto his friend. (KJV) Moses and God talked Face to Face just like you talk to your friends. When Moses went up to meet God they spoke directly. There was no middleman. God and Moses stood at arm s length and spoke eye to eye, mouth to mouth and face to face according to Exodus 33:11. It would simplify things if we could speak with our Father Face to Face like Moses did. There would be no wondering what God s will is. You would simply ask him directly and he would reply. How many times have we all said, "If only I knew for sure what God wanted me to do, I would DO it!? Well someday you will get your chance. God intends to meet his Sons Face to Face. Some day you and I will have a Face-to-Face meeting with God. We will be in the same place, the same room with God, and we will look into his eyes and speak with him. We will some day meet the one who really Fathered us, the Most High God. We are Sons of God. When an earthly father holds his newborn son for the first time, his Face lights up with happiness. How much more does our heavenly Father desire to embrace and love his children? God s plan in the Garden of Eden was to Walk and Talk with Adam. In the cool of the day, God would come and walk with Adam. In the garden, God would speak with Adam Face to Face. God is a loving and merciful Father, and Adam could speak directly with him. Adam enjoyed this time when he walked and talked with God in Paradise. But when Adam sinned, things changed. Adam knew that God spoke to him directly with very clear instructions. There was NO misunderstanding between God & Adam because they spoke like friends. Adam was well aware that he had sinned and now had to "face" God. Adam heard God coming down the path and tried to hide among the trees. Genesis 3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. (NIV) God spoke Face to Face with Adam before the fall and plans to speak directly with us at the appointed time. Adam quickly found that you simply couldn t hide from God. Genesis 3:9-10 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" 10He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I HID." (NIV) God called out and Adam had to "face" God. It s hard to look someone in the eye when you are guilty. Somehow we think we can hide certain things from God. I think we would all act differently if we knew God was going to be meeting with us, Face to Face, every day like he did with Adam. We would have to look God in the eyes as we spoke face to face. Adam & Moses both spoke with God Face to Face. Enoch also walked with God. Enoch pleased God and they walked together. It is implied that Enoch spoke with God Face to Face until one day when God just took him. Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. Jacob also saw and spoke with God Face to Face. Please read the following scriptures very carefully. Genesis 32:30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen GOD FACE to FACE, and my life is preserved. (KJV) I was always taught that Jacob wrestled an "Angel." When I looked to find the scripture here, which said that Jacob wrestled an "Angel", I could not find it. Genesis 32:24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a MAN with him until the breaking of the day. (KJV) FACE OF GLORY [E. E. Brooks] 1

Here we find that Jacob was wrestling with a stranger. The Bible says that he was a Man, not an Angel. I can understand how the "angel" idea came because this was no ordinary man. But it was simply not an angel. Now Jacob and this stranger wrestled for quite awhile, until daybreak. Imagine you are camping out somewhere when a strange man comes along and starts wrestling with you. You would be trying to get rid of him. If the stranger started or initiated the fight, you would try to chase him away but Jacob did not tell this stranger to leave when daybreak came. Genesis 32:26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he (Jacob) said, I will Not let thee go, except thou Bless Me. (KJV) This verse says that Jacob would Not let the stranger go. That implies that Jacob saw this stranger passing by and Jacob grabbed him. Jacob started the whole thing. Jacob realized that this was No ordinary Man. He knew this stranger was different. Jacob did not want to let this special visitor go. It was Jacob s physical persistence of grabbing, holding and general wrestling which tells us that this was a very special encounter. Why did Jacob grab this stranger and Not want to let go? Because Jacob wanted to know his name. Here tradition teaches that Jacob wrestles with an angel. But this is simply not what the Bible says. Often tradition and truth do not line up, just as in this case. Who is this stranger that changed Jacob s name to Israel? Genesis 32:27-28 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Now this stranger has just changed Jacob s name to Israel. Would you let a strange "man" Change Your name? Jacob asked the stranger to reveal his identity, to tell him his name. Jacob knows who this is now. This is no ordinary man or angel. Jacob comes to a mighty revelation. "Who ARE you?" Genesis 32:29-30 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou does ask after my name? And he blessed him there. Jacob asked for the strangers name but got NO REPLY. The stranger did Not give his name, but only replied, "Why do you want to know my name?" 30 And Jacob called the name of the Place PENIEL <06439> for I HAVE SEEN GOD FACE <06440> to FACE <06440>, and my life is preserved. Jacob knew he had not only seen God, but also talked with him Face to Face. Jacob was surprised that he saw God and Lived! Why was Jacob so surprised? Perhaps it was because Jacob was Less than Perfect. Jacob named the place "PENIEL" which means "FACE." THE STRANGERS NAME WAS NOT PENIEL. I can see how some would say that Jacob wrestled an angel named "Peniel" but this is simply not true. The stranger NEVER said his name was Peniel that is pure tradition. Jacob named the PLACE where it happened "Peniel." Peniel means Face. Notice that the Hebrew words for "Peniel" and "Face" have consecutive Strong s numbers 6439 & 6440, respectively. # 6439 Peniel = Face of God -- # 6440 Paniym = Face; 6440 Paniym = Face 1) face 1a) face, faces 1b) presence, person 1c) face (of seraphim or cherubim) 1d) face (of animals) 1e) face, surface (of ground) 6439 Peniel = "Face of God" -- Penuel or Peniel = "Facing God" FACE OF GLORY [E. E. Brooks] 2

1) The PLACE named by Jacob when he Wrestled With GOD and located on the n. bank of the Jabbok close to the Jordan Jacob claims that he wrestled with and spoke with GOD, not an angel. I choose to believe Jacob and not tradition here. Jacob knew what had happened. He had met God Face to Face AND LIVED. He called that place "Face of God" or "Peniel." Jacob did not wrestle an angel or a man. Jacob wrestled with God. Tradition is hard to break when it is so deep rooted. Jesus is God and he has a glorified physical body. Jesus still has the same body he was born with. They checked the grave and His body was gone. The Father gave Jesus a body of Flesh and then he Glorified it. We have no problem seeing Jesus appear to the disciples when the doors were locked. Jesus appeared to them and ate fish in his physical (but glorified) body. We also have no problem with Jesus appearing in the flesh and yet know that he dwells in our hearts AT THE SAME TIME. Jesus has the ability to appear in his physical body AND also dwell in the hearts of every believer. We have a harder time picturing the Father with a physical body because of tradition. Who did Adam, Moses and the others see when they looked into the Face of God? They saw God the Father with a physical body. It does NOT mean that God is limited to that body because we know he also dwells in our hearts. Would God give Jesus a body, which he himself does not have? Jesus said, "If you see me you see the Father." Well that is because the Father also has a body. This does not make him any less of a God. He is still the Most High God, possessor of Heaven and Earth. The physical body was God s idea in the first place. He created it and formed it out of the ground. God intends to dwell in Temples Not made with hands, which is the Physical Body, not the Cathedrals, Temples or Mosques. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between a physical body and a Glorified physical body. A Glorified physical body contains GLORY. Whose Glory is it? The Glory of the Father. He has Glory and he gave his same Glory to Jesus. When God gave his Glory to Jesus, his Face began to shine! Matthew 17:2 And (Jesus) was transfigured before them: and his FACE did SHINE as the SUN, and his raiment was white as the LIGHT. (KJV) Here Jesus receives Glory in his physical body. Jesus is "transfigured" (Greek- metamorphosed), and HIS Face began to Shine. The Father also has a Face that Shines. He is the one who gives the Glory to Jesus and also to the Sons of God. There will be a group who receive the Glory of the Father in the physical Body exactly like Jesus has. Matthew 13:43 Then shall the Righteous Shine forth as the Sun in the Kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. (KJV) Seeing God s Face is one thing, seeing his FACE of GLORY is another. There is absolutely no question that God spoke Face to Face with Adam, Moses, Enoch, Jacob and others. We have just looked at many scriptures. But what about these OTHER scriptures? 1 John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. (KJV) John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. (KJV) There is an apparent contradiction here. Plenty of people have seen God and the Old Testament says so. We just looked at many scriptures, which say different. God s word is true and has no contradictions at all. In order to understand this apparent conflict, we must see the difference between the Face of God and his Face of Glory. This difference is not a tricky play on words. The difference is God appearing as a man and God appearing in full GLORY. FACE OF GLORY [E. E. Brooks] 3

God has the ability to hide his power and show up and speak with Moses Face to Face without overwhelming Moses with blinding Glory. Jesus could do the same thing. He could appear to those who knew him, and not even be recognized. We will now look at the rest of the story of Moses speaking Face to Face with God. Moses has been talking with God like you or I talk with a friend. They sat down together, walked around together and looked each other in the Eye as they talked. Then Moses asked God something totally different. Moses, speaking to God Face to Face, says, "God, Show Me Your GLORY!" Wow! Moses says to God, "Hey God, show me your Stuff!" Exodus 33:11, 18 And the LORD spake unto Moses FACE to FACE, as a man speaketh unto his friend.18 And he (Moses) said, I beseech thee, SHOW ME THY GLORY. (KJV) Moses wanted to see what God could really do. Moses wanted to see God in all his GLORY! Moses wanted to see the FACE of GLORY. Then God says, "YES, YES MOSES I WILL ALLOW YOU TO SEE MY GLORY!" Wow, Moses must have been excited, wouldn t you be? Exodus 33:18-20 And he (Moses) said, I beseech thee, SHOW ME THY GLORY. 19 And he (God) said, I will make ALL MY GOODNESS pass before thee, AND I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. 20And he said, THOU CANST NOT SEE MY FACE: for THERE shall NO MAN SEE ME AND LIVE. (KJV) God tells Moses that he can see his Glory but NOT HIS FACE OF GLORY! Just a few verses earlier it plainly states that Moses DID talk to and See God, Face to Face. But Moses wanted to see God s Face of Glory and that s Different! God s FACE of GLORY is All his power, light and goodness. The word "goodness" is really "God-ness." Who can see God s FACE of Glory and live? NO ONE (until Jesus that is). Therefore God placed his Hand over Moses eyes, blocking his view of God s Face of Glory! Exodus 33:21-23 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: 22And it shall come to pass, while my GLORY passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my Hand while I pass by: 23And I will take away mine Hand, and thou shalt see my Back Parts: BUT MY FACE SHALL NOT BE SEEN. (KJV) God said, "You can see my Glory, but not my FACE of Glory." There is a big difference. Moses wanted to see the power of his Glorious Face. There, in Exodus we see that God DID permit Moses to SEE him, but in John it says, NO man has seen God AT ANY TIME. Well the truth is that No Man has seen God s FACE of GLORY. Many have seen God Face to Face as we have read. God can hide his power and appear to man at any time. Habakkuk 3:4 And his(god s) Brightness was as the Light; he had horns (Glory) coming out of his Hand: and there was the Hiding of his Power. (KJV) God can make his Face shine or he can hide his power. Jesus also could hide his power, like Father- like Son! There are many scriptures, which talk about God s Face. Here are a few of them. Numbers 6:25 The LORD Make his Face Shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: Psalm 31:16 Make thy Face to Shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake. Psalm 80:3 Turn us again, O God, and Cause thy Face to Shine; and we shall be saved. Psalm 119:135 Make thy Face to Shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes. FACE OF GLORY [E. E. Brooks] 4

The worst thing is for God to Hide his FACE from you. It is one thing for God to Hide his GLORY and another for him to Hide his FACE! If God hides his Face from you, then you are in big trouble. Deuteronomy 31:18And I will surely HIDE MY FACE in that day for all the evils, which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods. Psalm 69:17 And HIDE NOT THY FACE from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily. (KJV) Micah 3:4 Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even HIDE HIS FACE from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings. (KJV) Adam tried to hide from the Face of God in the garden. Because of sin, Adam did not want to "face" God. When we see God s Face, we are convicted by his goodness. Israel wanted Moses to talk to God Face to Face for the same reason. They were afraid to "face" God. When you talk to God for yourself then You are responsible for what he says. They feared God because they knew his power and because they were sinful. It was their way of hiding from God like Adam did in the garden. God wanted to speak to Israel but Israel wanted to hide from God. Exodus 20:19-20 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but LET NOT GOD SPEAK WITH US, lest we die. 20And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your Faces, that ye sin not. We do the same today. We all do things we would not do if we knew we would be meeting God, Face-to-Face, everyday. If we knew God would come down and walk with us everyday, say at 4:00 p.m., then we would be very careful what we did & said, every day! We are as foolish as Adam was when he hid among the trees. We do and say things as if God is not aware. Perhaps we all have encountered the Father or Jesus at some time in our lives and just been unaware that it was God! Perhaps God has hidden his power and was standing next to you on the bus. Perhaps Jesus appeared as a homeless person you passed by on the street. It makes you think twice about ignoring the needy. It is possible that we are ignoring God unawares. Yes, God has a Face. He also has Hands and Feet. Remember that WE were created in HIS IMAGE & LIKENESS. When Moses came down from talking with God, his Face shone too! Moses had to put a veil over his Face so he did not scare the people. Just speaking with God caused Moses Face to shine. Exodus 34:35 And the children of Israel saw the FACE of Moses, that the SKIN of Moses' FACE Shone: and Moses put the veil upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him (God). (KJV) The Glory of God is in the FACE of JESUS CHRIST. The Glory of the Father is for the physical Body. Jesus received the fullness of the Glory, which the Father has. 2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the Light to Shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to GIVE THE LIGHT of the knowledge of the GLORY OF GOD in the FACE of Jesus Christ. (KJV) There will also be a group of Sons who receive the same Glory the Father has. Jesus talks about a group who will receive the same GLORY as he has. THEY will be ONE with Jesus & the Father and have the SAME GLORY. John 17:22 And the GLORY which thou gavest ME (Jesus) I have given THEM; that THEY may be ONE, even as we are ONE: (KJV) There is a much greater GLORY than Moses had on his Face. This is the 100 fold Glory of God. The Glory of the Sun. The Glory reserved for the Overcomers. FACE OF GLORY [E. E. Brooks] 5

2 Corinthians 3:7-8 But if the ministration of death, written and engraved in stones, was Glorious, so that the children of Israel could not steadfastly behold the Face of Moses for the Glory of his Countenance; which Glory was to be done away: 8How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather (more) Glorious? (KJV) Revelation 21:7 He that Overcometh shall INHERIT ALL THINGS; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. (KJV) Some will Behold the Glory of God. They will become One with God and receive the inheritance of the Father which is his Glory. They will actually Behold which is to BE and to HOLD. The Sons of God will BE the Light and they will Hold or Contain the Glory. John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may BEHOLD MY GLORY, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. (KJV) John 17:22 And the GLORY which thou gavest me I have given THEM; that THEY may be ONE, even as WE ARE ONE: (KJV) Matthew 13:43 Then shall the Righteous Shine forth as the Sun in the Kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. (KJV) Revelation 21:23, 25 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the GLORY of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth THEM LIGHT: and THEY shall reign for ever and ever. (KJV) John 17:5 And now, O Father, GLORIFY THOU ME with thine own self with the GLORY, which I had with thee before the world was. The Bible teaches us to look at our Face in a Mirror. What are we to look for? The Glory of the Lord! We are actually told to look for the Glory of the Father to appear in OUR FACE. 2 Corinthians 3:18 But WE all, with open Face beholding as in a glass (mirror) the GLORY OF THE LORD, are Changed (Metamorphosed) into the SAME IMAGE from GLORY to GLORY, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Now we do not see much Glory, even though we are the Sons of God. There are major changes in store for the Manifested Sons. They will be changed to be exactly like Jesus when we see him! Look for the Glory in your Face. 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM; for we shall see him as he is. (KJV) We all might as well get ready to meet God, Face to Face. Sooner or later it will happen. We will also meet Jesus the same way. Imagine Jesus and the Father sitting next to you as you are reading this page. The disciples embraced Jesus after he had his glorified Body. Thomas was able to touch the Hands and Side of Jesus. Jesus and Thomas were able to embrace in a physical, brother-to-brother, friend-to-friend and Faceto-Face manner. Jesus had the full Glory then but it was hidden for the moment. God the Father also has the ability to embrace Jesus, his only Begotten Son. Jesus and the Father standing Face-to-Face, smiling and looking in each other s eyes as they fall into a loving embrace. The Glorious Father and Son Re-UNION. But that is not the whole picture. There will be others who are included in that Union. Your eyes will someday meet their eyes as well. There are 30-60 and 100 fold Christians. Some will actually put on the Mind of Christ. Some will Overcome Every enemy and sit IN God s Throne. Jesus said, "Be ye perfect, as your Father in heaven is perfect." Some will become Perfect, like Jesus, in Spirit AND Soul AND Body. Keep in mind that God desires to meet with you, Face-to-Face and he is Merciful and Loving. God is FACE OF GLORY [E. E. Brooks] 6

approachable and embrace-able. It is because of Jesus that we can come to the Father. Jesus was the only one who could look into God s Face of Glory and live. Yes, others saw God Face to Face, but only Jesus could Be-Hold the fullness of God s Glory. There was nothing but goodness in Him. Jesus is our Savior and our example. But Jesus is also the Firstborn among Many. Psalm 17:15 As for me, I will behold thy Face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. (KJV) 1 Cor 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then Face to Face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (KJV) Rev 22:4 And they shall see his Face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he (Jesus) might be the Firstborn among Many brethren. Hebrews 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in BRINGING MANY SONS UNTO GLORY, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. (KJV) Romans 8:18-19 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with THE GLORY WHICH SHALL BE REVEALED IN US. 19For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the MANIFESTATION OF THE SONS OF GOD. (KJV) The Bible teaches us to Seek for Glory, Honor and Immortality. Romans 2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing SEEK for GLORY and HONOR and IMMORTALITY, eternal life: (KJV) What we see Jesus and our Father do, we will also do. Those who sit IN God s Throne will grant Mercy, Love & Forgiveness like our Father does.
