See his glory on the mountain! February 11 th, 2018

Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod 2001 Jackson Street Pastor Luke John Willitz Mosinee, WI 54455 (321) 465-2077 (715) 693-2910 ilcmosinee@gmail.com www.ilcmosinee.com The Transfiguration of Our Lord February 11 th, 2018 Order of Service Matins (p. 45) Opening Hymn #586: O Splendor of God s Glory Bright (The congregation may rise for the final verse of the hymn.) Confession of Sins M: Dearly beloved! We have come together in the presence of God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hand, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and salvation. O come, let us worship him! Let us kneel and bow down before him. Let us confess our sins with penitent hearts, and obtain forgiveness by his infinite grace and mercy. C: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed the devices and desires of our hearts. We have offended against your holy law. We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things which we should have done. Have mercy on us, O Lord! Spare us and restore us, according to the promises you have declared to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. For his sake grant that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy name. M: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Venite

Prayer of the Day M: Let us pray. Lord God, before the suffering and death of your one and only Son, you revealed his glory on the holy mountain. Grant that we who bear his cross on earth may behold by faith the light of his heavenly glory and so be changed into his likeness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. The Word Old Testament Lesson 2 Kings 2:1-12a Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. And Elijah said to Elisha, Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel. But Elisha said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you? And he said, Yes, I know it; keep quiet. Elijah said to him, Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho. But he said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you? And he answered, Yes, I know it; keep quiet. Then Elijah said to him, Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan. But he said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were

standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you. And Elisha said, Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me. And he said, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so. And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and he cried, My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! And he saw him no more. Psalm 148 (p. 121) Epistle Lesson 2 Corinthians 3:12 4:2 Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. Confessional Reading The Formula of Concord The Formula of Concord (1577) was written to unify all Lutherans under one banner. Luther s death left a vacuum in the leadership of the church and several parties formed within Lutheranism some began to deny the Bible s doctrine, but others wanted to keep it pure. Martin Chemnitz was a leader of the pure Lutherans and the chief editor of the Formula, an extremely detailed document defending the doctrine of the Bible against the false teachings of other church bodies.

In this reading we behold the mystery of Christ: He is not two beings one God and the other man. He is one being both God and man in one. We cannot understand this logically but we grab hold of it through faith. Formula of Concord, Epitome VIII: The Person of Christ That the divine and the human natures are personally united in Christ in such a way that there are not two Christs, one the Son of God and the other the Son of man, but a single individual is both the Son of God and the Son of man (Luke 1:35; Rom. 9:5). We believe, teach, and confess that the divine and the human nature are not fused into one essence and that the one is not changed into the other, but that each retains its essential properties and that they never become the properties of the other nature. The properties of the divine nature are omnipotence, eternity, infinity, and (according to its natural property, by itself) omnipresence, omniscience, etc., which never become properties of the human nature. The attributes of the human nature are to be a corporeal creature, to be flesh and blood, to be finite and circumscribed, to suffer, to die, to ascend and to descend, to move from place to place, to endure hunger, thirst, cold, heat, and the like, which never become the properties of the divine nature. Hymn of the Day #96: Oh, Wondrous Type! Oh, Vision Fair Sermon: See his glory on the mountain! Gospel Lesson Mark 9:2-9 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son; listen to him. And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

Prayer of the Church Lord s Prayer C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Prayer for Grace M: O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. Blessing Closing Hymn - #97: Down from the Mount of Glory

Farewell to Alleluia M: Brothers and sisters in Christ, when we next gather for worship, it will be Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. On that day we will begin our solemn journey to the Savior s cross. While the joy of faith remains undiminished throughout the year, our rejoicing during Lent is muted and quiet. For centuries, therefore, the Christian churches have omitted their most jubilant songs during this season, including the word alleluia, which means, praise the Lord. Now for a time we say farewell to alleluia. We do this to prepare ourselves for the quieter days of Lent. The alleluias will return on Easter dawn as we gather to shout our praise to the risen Lord. Alleluia, Song of Triumph

Ash Wednesday I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes (Job 42:6). Throughout Scripture ashes serve both as a symbol of repentance and as a reminder of human mortality. As a healthy reminder of these themes, our Ash Wednesday worship includes an ancient Christian ceremony called the imposition of ashes. After we confess our sins, everyone will be invited to come forward and Pastor will apply ashes to our foreheads in the shape of a cross. While we encourage every baptized believer present to receive the sign of ashes, participation in this symbolic ceremony is optional. Christian Worship: Occasional Services, a companion volume to our red hymnal, provides this informative explanation: Ash Wednesday begins the Christian's Lenten journey with a reminder of our mortality and a call to repentance (Genesis 18:27; Job 42:6; Jeremiah 6:26; Matthew 11:21). The ancient practice of imposing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful gives Ash Wednesday its name. The church father Tertullian (c. A.D. 160-215) writes of the practice as a public expression of repentance and of our human frailty that stands in need of Christ. The ashes remind us forcefully of our need for redeeming grace as they recall words from the rite for Christian burial:... earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust..., words that will someday be spoken over us all. The imposition of ashes has never been an exclusively Roman Catholic practice and today is observed widely by Christians of many traditions. Feel free to speak to Pastor for more information about Ash Wednesday or about the imposition of ashes.
