September 16, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, May the Lord give us His peace. September 29th is the feast of St. Michael the Archangel. In our Sacred Tradition, St. Michael is called upon to assist in the battle against Satan and the evil he seeks to inflict upon the human race, especially the Church. The current situation in the life of the Church is the result of sin, and the shepherds are culpable. However, for us to ignore the existence of Satan, and his diabolical plan to destroy the Body of Christ, would be naive. We are at war, and the stakes are high! As St. Paul states: our battle is not with flesh and blood, but with powers and principalities (Ephesians 6:12). In anticipation of this Feast, I would like to invite our entire Collaborative Family to join in a novena to St. Michael. Over the course of 9 days, beginning September 21st and concluding on the 29th, all members of our Collaborative Family are invited to pray the St. Michael Prayer. We will also be praying this prayer at the end of each Mass. The Saint Michael Prayer St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke Him, we humbly pray, and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell satan, and all the other evil spirits, who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. In 1994 in a speech in St. Peter's square, Pope Saint John Paul II said, "May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle we are told about in the Letter to the Ephesians: "Draw strength from the Lord and from His mighty power" (Ephesians 6:10). The Book of Revelation refers to this same battle, recalling before our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (Revelation 12:7). Pope Leo XIII certainly had a very vivid recollection of this scene when, at the end of the last century, he introduced a special prayer to St. Michael throughout the Church. Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world" (Pope John Paul II, Regina Caeli, 24 April 1994). Your brother in Christ, Fr. Matt+ Farewell to Fr. Chris Palladino As many of you know, Fr. Chris Palladino has decided to depart the St. John s Rectory after living there for a number of years. His mother s health continues to decline and he has decided to move in order to provide the care she needs at this hour. Fr. Chris will be missed by our Collaborative Family, as he has spent much of his priesthood (and seminary days) accompanying and serving both parishes. We will have a special Mass of Thanksgiving for Fr. Chris, some time in November (date tbd), allowing all of us to express our gratitude and appreciation for his generous service. ST JOHN-ST JOSPEH CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM 2018-2019 We value our parents as the first and most important educators in their child s faith development and we look forward to working with your family again this year. Registration information for the 2018-2019 year has been mailed to all families who participated in last year s program. There are also registration materials available online on the St John and St Joseph websites and at the door of each Church. We hope that you will share this registration information and an invitation to join our program with other families, especially those who have students entering first grade or may have children that have missed some years of religious education. Please invite these families to contact us if they would like registration materials or may have questions about our program. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us by phone (617-877-5014) or email (restjohnquincy@gmail.com) and we will be happy to assist you. St. John s Senior Social Group St. John s Senior Social Group meets the first Wednesday of each month from noon-2pm in the Lower Church Hall. Lunch is provided for a cost of $5 per person. Williams as Pastor of our Collaborative Churches. St. John the Baptist Parish Thinking About Becoming Catholic? Do you know of anyone, maybe yourself, who may be interested in becoming a Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is designed for non-catholics who may be interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and perhaps becoming a Catholic, by preparing for and receiving the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Adults who were baptized as Roman Catholics, but did not receive further catechetical formation, and consequently did not receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist are also candidates for this program. We are happy to say that we already have four adults who have registered! For more information, contact Fr. Matt (617-773-1021) Vocation Office Re-Launch of Website Now more than ever, the Church is called to renew Her efforts to encourage holy and faithful men to a priestly vocation-and to encourage all the Faithful to consider how the Lord desires them to serve Him. We are happy to announce that the Vocation Office has a newly designed web site and invite you to check it out at www.vocationsboston.org. The site features new design, content, and resources for parishioners interested in learning how to encourage a Culture of Vocations in their parish, and for men to Explore the Priestly Vocation. Interested in learning how you can lend your talents to encouraging those men called to be holy priests? Want to explore vocational discernment, seminary life, and the life of seminarians and priests? Come see Www.vocationsboston.org and feel free to contact the Vocation Office by phone at 617-746-5949.
