Mustard Seed Children s Summary for September 9, 2007 Released on September 5, 2007 God Created People Memory Verse: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" (Genesis 1:27). Scripture Lesson Text: Genesis 1:26 31. 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. NOTES ON THE LESSON The passage in this lesson is only part of the account of the creation of humans. Genesis 2:7-9 and 15-25 add to what is in Genesis 1:26-31. Study both as you prepare to teach. It did not take a million years for the earth and its creatures to get to the point they are at now. Neither did it take a million years for God to complete the earth's creation. He did it in six days! It was fully prepared for Adam and Eve the same day they were created. Note that the previous acts of God followed immediately after: "And God said, Let there be," and "Let the earth then bring forth." Both statements are in stark contrast to "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness" (Gen. 1:26). Man was made in the Triune God's image. It is evidence of man's uniqueness. David proclaimed in awe that man was made "a little lower than the angels" (Ps. 8:5). He was not inspired to write that man was made a little greater than the animals.

We are more than that. We are special to God. Man is the acme of God's creation. Man's relation to God, being made in His image, is his crowning glory. Being in God's image gave man a great responsibility as the overseers of His creation. God commissioned man to have dominion over all the creatures of the earth. The animals of the earth were made subject to man's rule. Man was given the commission to study and use nature for his benefit. Perhaps we should look to God's example as our Ruler and the Ruler of all creation to better understand our commission to dominate the creatures of this earth. God is compassionate. He does not subject His creation to any silly whims. He is wise and loving and just. His rules are fair, and the burdens that are placed upon us are light when we are covered by His grace. As God's stewards of this earth, we should wisely use what He has provided. Sadly, because of sin, mankind has wastefully exploited His creation. Some animals, such as the dodo, are extinct, and others are near extinction. One day, all of creation will be set free from the burden of sin when Christ returns (Rom. 8:19-23). God gave man another commission. Just like the other creatures of His creation, man would be able to reproduce. The animals could reproduce to create more, each after its own kind. He made plants with seeds that would reproduce after their own kind. Adam and Eve, as the parents of all humankind, would be able to have children that would start populating the earth. This commission can also be considered a blessing from God. In several places in Scripture, we read that children are a blessing from God (1 Sam. 1:20; Ps. 127:3-5; 128:3). In this passage we also see how God preserves what He has created. In His grace, He provided food for man and animal. It might be supposition to say that humankind and animals survived only on vegetation, but it is more important to point out that the supply of food would not diminish because God made plant life to reproduce itself. In His grace, everything is fed from His hand. When God finished the Creation on the sixth day, He saw that everything was not only good, as was said on earlier days of the Creation, but it was very good. What was done on the sixth day was the height of God's creation. God considered everything very beautiful. The miracle of the Creation is awe-inspiring. Impart to your students the fact that we are special to God. We are made in His image and likeness. This cannot be said of any other living creature. THE OBJECT IN VIEW: Teach that God made man and woman in His image. Humankind is unique because of this. TRUTHS TO STRESS: 1. In the beginning, God created man and woman in His image. God gave to man dominion over the creatures of the earth and provided food for all creatures. Humans are unique in God's creation. We are special to Him as evidenced by the sending of His Son to die for our sins. PLANNING VISUAL AIDS For Beginning the Lesson, bring a picture of apes and also a picture portraying Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. For Telling the Lesson, bring in dirt and modeling clay. Have another picture of Adam and Eve in the garden (internet picture or at a local Christian book store). For Helping to Remember, bring crayons and a picture to color of Adam and Eve in the garden for each child. Have the golden text printed on a small slip of paper for each child. Bring glue.

BEGINNING THE LESSON (Show picture of apes). There are people who believe that once, a long time ago, apes changed into humans. People who believe we used to be apes, say that apes changed little by little over millions of years. This belief is called evolution. You might hear about evolution at school or on television. People who believe in evolution do not believe what the Bible says about where humans come from. They say the Bible is wrong. Christians know the truth about how people were made. God first created a man. The man's name was Adam. Later, God created a woman, and her name was Eve. (Show picture of Adam and Eve.) They were special because God made them, and they were made to be like Him. TELLING THE LESSON (Show the dirt you brought to class.) The Bible tells us in Genesis 2 that God made the first man from dirt. We should not be surprised that He could make humans from dirt because He can do anything. (Get out the modeling clay.) This clay has something like dirt in it. We can make a shape that looks like a person. (Mold the clay into a shape of a person.) We can try everything to make it come alive. We can breathe on it, the way God did with Adam and Eve, but that would not do anything. It is still just clay. We cannot make it come to life. But God can do anything. He shaped man from the dirt of the ground. He breathed life into him, and he came alive. He made the woman from a part of the man. He made them to be like Him. (Show picture of Adam and Eve.) How are we like God? you might ask. We can think, although no one is as wise as God is. We know the difference between right and wrong. We should always choose to do right and avoid doing wrong. We are also like God because He gave humans the ability to rule over parts of what He created. He allows us to rule over animals. We can study and use the animals of the air, land, and seas for our good. We use animals for food. That is what God told us to do. We can also get clothes and medicines from plants and animals in nature. God allowed us to do this, so we should not waste what He has given us. It is also important to remember that even though we are learning in this lesson that God gave mankind the rule over animals, it does not mean that all animals are safe to be around. Yes, our dogs, cats, and other pets are usually safe to pet and play with, but we would not want play with a bear or a lion. That would be dangerous and foolish. God gave us common sense and we should use it when we are around animals. God provided food for Adam and Eve and for all the creatures He created. God takes care of all He created. We should thank Him every day for the food, clothes, homes, families, and friends that He has given us. TELLING HOW TO LIVE Whenever someone at school, such as a friend or a teacher, tells you that humans were once apes a long time ago, you do not have to believe him. You know the truth. You know that God made everything and that He did it in six days, not millions of years. On the sixth day of the Creation, God looked at all He had made and saw that it was very good. Everything was very beautiful. We also know that Adam and Eve sinned. They broke God's rule of not eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:16-17). We are all sinners because of it, but God sent Jesus to die for our sins. We can go to heaven someday to live forever with God. We need to ask Jesus to be our Saviour. If you would like to do that, I would love to talk to you and pray with you after class. HELPING TO REMEMBER Give each child crayons and a picture to color of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Have the children color their pictures. You could use this time to ask your students

questions to review the lesson. Have each student glue the slip of paper you prepared with the memory verse on the bottom of his picture. Memory Verse: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them" (Genesis 1:27). God made man in His image. This means that each person is similar to God in some ways. We are special to God because of this. We know the difference between right and wrong, and we feel bad when we do something bad. Our minds can sometimes understand some very difficult things. We can show emotions and most of the time understand what we are feeling. We can speak and tell others how we are feeling. Only humans can do these things, and only God could have created humans. He made a man and a woman. He created boys and girls. He had each of us in mind a long time ago, before anything was made. He knew man would choose to disobey Him and sin. He knew we would need Jesus to save us from our sins. CIRCLE THE CORRECT WORDS: 1.
