CAN YOU WALK ON WATER? - Matthew 14:22-33 Introduction: A. Why Did Peter Begin To Sink? 1. Matthew 14:22-33 ---- and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" B. PETER. 1. He was among the first disciples of Jesus. 2. He was chosen as one of the twelve, and belonged to the "inner circle" of three: Peter, James, John. a. He is always listed first of the twelve. b. He was (like James and John) "named" by Jesus. 3. The first... a. To confess his faith in Jesus. b. To see the Lord after his resurrection. c. To preach the gospel to the gentiles. C. INCIDENTS HIGHLIGHTING WEAKNESSES 1. When the Lord told him, "Get thee behind me Satan." Mk 8:33 2. His bumbling remarks at the transfiguration. Mk 9:5 3. In the garden, when he fell asleep. Mk 14:37 4. When he fled from the Lord with the others, and then denied the Lord three times. 5. When he drew back from eating with the Gentiles at Antioch. Gal 2:10ff a. Peter himself said on one occasion, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." b. Satan went after Peter (Lk 22:31) and had some success with him. D. Matthew 14:22-33 (NKJV) ---- Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. [23] And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. [24] But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. [25] Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. [26] And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. [27] But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." [28] And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." [29] So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. [30] But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" [31] And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" [32] And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. [33] Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God." E. So the question is - CAN WE WALK ON WATER? 1. Literally NO because the command was to Peter and NOT TO US! 2. Figuratively YES We can accomplish anything Jesus has Commanded us to do! II. SO - WHY DID PETER BEGIN TO SINK? A. Not Because: 1. He Lacked Faith In Jesus Power! (vrs 28) If it be thou... a. He knew that Jesus could enable him to walk on the water... b. This is an expression of faith! 2. He Lacked Interest & Effort (vrs 28) - Bid me to come to thee... He wanted to Page 1 of 7

demonstrate his faith (Peter was often quick to offer evidence of his devotion to Jesus) a. Many fail in there service to the Lord simply because they truly do not DESIRE to serve Him (Matthew 15:7-9; Hebrews 11:6) (1) Matthew 15:7-9 ---- 7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: 8 These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. (2) Hebrews 11:6 ---- 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 3. He Acted Presumptuously (vrs 28,29) "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." [29] So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, a. He knew better to than to step out of the boat without the Lord s permission - (1) Jeremiah 10:23 (KJV) O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. (2) Psalm 17:5 (NKJV) Uphold my steps in Your paths, That my footsteps may not slip. (3) Psalm 37:23 (NKJV) The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. (4) Proverbs 14:12 (NKJV) There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. 4. The Instructions of the Lord COULD NOT Be Carried Out (vrs 29)... he walked on the water to go to Jesus. a. Peter knew that if the Lord said Do it it could be done! I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philip. 4:13 b. With God all things are possible (1) Matthew 19:23-27 (NKJV) Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. [24] And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." [25] When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" [26] But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." [27] Then Peter answered and said to Him, "See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have? c. In Christ we can overcome the world! (1) 1 John 5:2-5 (NKJV) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. [3] For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. [4] For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith. [5] Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? B. But Rather Because: 1. He was distracted by the storm (vrs 28) But when he saw... a. A tactic successfully used by the devil to lure people into sin and ineffectiveness is that of distraction! 2. We can easily be distracted from our service to the Lord by: a. Being anxious, or overly concerned for our material needs and desires - Matthew 6:25 (1) Matthew 6:25 ---- 25 Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you Page 2 of 7

will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? b. The hardships we have been called to endure - Matthew 13:20-21 (1) Matthew 13:20-21 ----- 20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. c. Allowing material things to consume our time and efforts Matthew 13:22 (1) Matthew 13:22 ---- 22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. d. Other People (1) Parents - Matt. 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. (2) Children - Matt. 10:37 (3) Peers John 12:42,43 - Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; [43] for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. (4) Friends 1 Cor. 15:33 (NKJV) Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." 3. No matter how bad things appear to be we MUST REMEMBER all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 a. Betrayal by a close friend Job b. Persecution by enemies Job c. Lying tongues which hurt you Job d. Financial backsets Job e. Accident to yourself or loved one Job f. Loss of health Job (1) A double minded man is unstable in all his ways James 1:8 ---- 8 he is a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways. (2) James in the context tells us that we can use these obstacles to strengthen our faith!!! (vrs 1-5, 12) (a) James 1:1-5,12 ---- James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad: Greetings. 2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials,3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (b) vrs 12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. III. WHY DO WE BEGIN TO SINK A. Because We Take Our Eyes Off Jesus! 1. We can easily be distracted by: a. Temptations (Gen 3:1-6) ---- Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the Page 3 of 7

field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die. 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die.5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. b. Problems (Num. 13:28-33) ---- 28 Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there.29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan. 30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it. 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we. 32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.33 There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight. c. Our Past (Phil. 3:13,14)---- 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. d. Our Work (Eph 4:28)---- 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. e. Our Burdens - (2 Cor 5:4; Gal 6:2; Heb 10:35-39) ---- 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. (1) Galatians 6:2 ---- 2 Bear one another s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (2) Hebrews 10:35-39 ---- 35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: 37 For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. 38 Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him. 39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. f. Relationships (1 Cor. 15:33) ---- 33 Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits. g. False Teachers (Eph 4:14) ---- 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, B. We Need To Keep Our Mind On Jesus! 1. Hebrews 12:2-3 (NKJV) ---- looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners Page 4 of 7

against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. 2. Upon Our Lord, Jesus Christ 1 Pet 2:21; Heb 2:9-18; 12:1-3; a. 1 Peter 2:21 ---- 21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: b. Hebrews 2:9-18 ---- 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,12 saying: I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You. 13 And again: I will put My trust in Him. And again: Here am I and the children whom God has given Me. 14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.16 For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed of Abraham.17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. c. Hebrews 12:1-3 ---- Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. 3. Upon The Words of Christ Luke 21:33; Matt.8:18,19; Jam 1:25; John 12:48 a. 4. Upon Our Blessings Eph 1:3; Phili 4:4-13 5. Upon God s Promises Acts 2:38; 1 John 1:9; 2 Cor 4:16-18 C. Fear Overpowered Peter s Faith (vrs 30) 1. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; 2. What seemed so sure to Peter INSIDE the boat became a frightening experience OUTSIDE the boat! - a. When buffeted by the gale he began to doubt then panicked! b. Fear gripped Peter again Mat 26:33,69-75; Gal. 2:11,12 D. Our Faith Can Be Overpowered By Fear 1. Faith is always easier to profess than to practice a. What seemed so sure to Peter INSIDE the boat became a frightening experience OUTSIDE the boat! b. When buffeted by the gale His attention shifted from Jesus to the wind and the waves - Fear overpowered his faith i.e. He Panicked! 2. Why did Peter Deny The Lord? a. Overconfident? (33) Matthew 26:33 (NKJV) Peter answered and said to Him, "Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble."... b. Lack of preparation? (Vrs 41-43) Page 5 of 7

c. Fear of men? (a sign of the flesh being stronger than the spirit...) Matthew 26:69-75 (NKJV) (1) [vrs 70] to the servant girl... "I do not know what you are saying." (2) [vrs 71]... another girl... he denied with an oath, "I do not know the Man!" (3) [vrs 73] those who stood by your speech betrays you." [74] Then he began to curse and swear, saying, "I do not know the Man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. 3. Fear is a manifestation of a weak faith - a. Matthew 10:28,31 (NKJV) And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell....[31] Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. b. Hebrews 13:5-6 (NKJV) Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." [6] So we may boldly say: "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" E. We should desire that the Lord strengthen our faith 1. Luke 17:5 And the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." F. Our love for God and His children Casts out fear! 1. 1 John 4:18 (NKJV) There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 2. Context: a. 3:24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. b. 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. c. 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. d. 4:17-18 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. [18] There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. G. Do NOT let fear destroy your faith!! 1. Rev. 2:10 (NKJV) Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 2. Rev. 21:8 (NKJV) But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." IV. Peter A. Had the faith to get out of the boat (vrs 29) B. Walked on Water (vrs 29) C. Began to Sink (vrs 30) D. Cried out Lord save me! - (vrs 30) E. Jesus SAVED HIM! (Vrs 32) V. Signs That You May Be Beginning To Sink A. A loosening of morals B. A creeping disinterest in worship and associating w/ other Christians C. Backsliding into practices you confessed were wrong Page 6 of 7

D. Good news: If we are slipping there is a way to fix it E. Unsinkable faith requires a single mind! Matt. 6:22,23 1. It is a challenge to serve the Lord! Matt. 7:13,14 2. We can do anything and everything the Lord commands us to do! Phili 4:13; 1 Cor. 10:13 3. But... we can easily find ourselves sinking... If we do - WHY DROWN????? - Acts 2:21; Rom 10:13; Mat 7:21-23; Acts 2:38; 22:16 F. Doubt distazo lit. to be divided 1. Faith requires a single mind! a. Peter allowed his attention to be diverted (1) To the storm (2) Away from Jesus (3) Producing fear (4) Weakening or mixing his faith with doubt! (5) Causing him to sink! 2. It is a challenge to serve the Lord! a. Matt. 7:13,14 Strait is the gate and narrow is the way... 3. It takes courage to serve Him!! a. Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 4. Serving the Lord CAN be done! 5. No mountain can stand before our faith IF it is what it ought to be! a. Matthew 21:21 (KJV) Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. b. Mark 9:23 (KJV) Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. c. But... If we find ourselves sinking... WHY DROWN????? (1) Maybe you are in the ocean of sin because you ve never obeyed the gospel know this you don t have to drown!! (2) Cry out to the Lord - Whosever shall call... Acts 2:21; Rom 10:13; (3) The Bible tells us HOW TO CALL Whosever doesn t mean in just ANY MANNER! - Matthew 7:21-23 d. Told how in Acts 2:38 Also see Acts 22:16 (1) Maybe you are in the ocean of sin because you ve fallen overboard fallen out of the ark of safety...you don t have to drown! Cry out to the Lord in repentance and prayer Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9 Page 7 of 7
