Or, someone may mention that they prayed before the Blessed Sacrament and you also wondered what they could mean by that. As Catholics we know that at the moment of Consecration, during the Mass, the "gifts" of bread and wine are transformed into the actual Body and Blood of Christ. The elements retain the appearance of bread and wine, but are indeed the actual Body and Blood of Christ. This is what is meant by Real Presence: the actual, physical presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Since we know that Christ is truly and substantially present in the Eucharist, the Blessed Sacrament is given the same adoration and devotion that is accorded to Christ. Understood simply, Eucharistic Adoration is adoring or honoring the Eucharistic Presence of Christ. During Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, we come before the Real Presence of Jesus and open ourselves up to the graces that flow from the Eucharist. Jesus waits for us in the Blessed Sacrament. He waits for our little acts of faith, adoration, love, thanksgiving, repentance, reparation, and charity that we can offer Him as we contemplate His Divine Majesty in the Blessed Sacrament. At Holy Family we are fortunate to have a Blessed Sacrament chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is not only reserved in a tabernacle but also exposed in a beautiful Monstrance on the altar for 3 hours each week day as well as all day on the First Friday of the month. But, what can you do or should you do if you come to visit the exposed Blessed Sacrament? Well, the answer quite simply is: anything that you want that is prayerful and contemplative. Some people read the bible or some other spiritual reading, some pray the rosary or other formal prayers, and still others do nothing except rest and gaze upon the beautiful presence of Christ. There are countless books available with advice about visiting the Blessed Sacrament and Adoration. Many are available in our chapel if you stop in sometime and are looking for something to guide you. We always encourage reverence and quiet when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on the altar so enter quietly and genuflect on two knees if you are able when you come into the chapel. Then just spend time with Jesus. The how to is insignificant just do it! Just come and find rest in Jesus from your burdens and know the joy of spending time with the most beautiful, precious gift that we have. The Blessed Sacrament Is exposed from noon until 3 pm every Monday through Friday and all day on the First Friday of the month in our small chapel on the left side of the church. If you have any questions or want more information about adoration at Holy Family, contact Mary Herbst (herbsthome@yahoo.com or 408-227-7141)
