We are glad you want to grow, and we want to help you in every way we can. The number one forum we use to help you learn from God is our twice-weekly Bible classes. Therefore, we have worked hard to develop classes that will help you grow in Christ and learn from God and His Word. From Captivity to Covenant In the quarter before us we will study the Old Testament books of Exodus. The book of Genesis is the book of beginnings. The story that began in that book continues in Exodus. It is the continuation of the saga of God building a great nation through the seed of Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3; 22:18). In Genesis God had made three promises to Abraham. He promised to make a great nation from his descendants; to give him a great land; and that through Abraham s seed, one would come who would bless all nations. God promised Abraham that his family would be so large that his descendants would be as numberless as the stars of the heavens (Genesis 15:5). Israel is that nation the descendants of Abraham. Indeed, they did become very great in number, just as the Lord had promised Abraham in Genesis 15:5. This is an exciting time period as God begins His covenant with Israel, foreshadowing and pointing to the greater covenant and the salvation we now have in Christ. You won t want to miss a single class as we study the great power and majesty of God, seeing the working out of His plan for Israel that will lead into His plans for the spiritual Israel of which we are now a part. About the Material This material was originally developed by Edwin Crozier. We have modified it (with Edwin s permission) for our purposes. This material assumes you have at least some knowledge of the Bible story and its themes. If you are new to the Bible, some questions may assume something you don t know. If you have trouble with any of the questions, don t worry. Just keep going through the lesson. We ll discuss all the questions in class and that will clarify what you need to know in each lesson. -- Greg and Max

Lesson 1: The Author A Review of Jesus Statements about the Pentateuch: 1. According to Jesus in Matthew 8:4 and Luke 5:14, who commanded the offerings for cleansed lepers in Leviticus 14? 2. According to Jesus in Matthew 19:8 and Mark 10:3, who gave the Israelites permission to divorce in Deuteronomy 24? 3. According to Jesus in Mark 7:10, who gave the commandment to honor father and mother in Exodus 20:12 and gave the death penalty for dishonoring them in Exodus 21:17? 4. According to Jesus in Mark 12:26 and Luke 20:37, whose book recounts the events of the burning bush found in Exodus 3-4? 5. According to Jesus in His story of Lazarus and the Rich man in Luke 16:29, who did Jesus claim the Jews had to show them about God s will? What did having these people actually refer to? 6. Critics claim that just because the first century Jews believed Moses wrote the Pentateuch (Genesis-Deuteronomy) doesn t mean he did. However, that admits the common idea of the Jews at the time of Jesus was that Moses wrote Exodus. How did Jesus place a stamp of approval on this common idea in John 5:46? 7. According to Jesus in John 7:19, who gave the Jews the Law? 3

8. Considering the above, who does Jesus claim is the author of Pentateuch? 9. How would you respond to critics who claim Moses couldn t author the Pentateuch because of passages like Deuteronomy 34? What were some of the key events in Moses life that impacted who he was and who he became? 13. How does knowing all this about the author impact the way you will read Exodus? 4

Lesson 2: The Audience Captivity to Covenant The Original Audience 1. As we ve already learned in the previous lesson, who is the author of the first five books of the Bible? 2. What about the books of Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy? The Original Audience s Story 4. How was the original audience of these books connected to the people and events recorded within them? 5. What was the goal of the original audience? 6. What did Moses original audience most need to hear? 5

7. What do you think might have been the original audience s greatest fears? 8. What do you think might have been Moses greatest fears for his original audience? The Modern Audience 9. How are we, Moses modern audience, connected to the original audience and the people and events of Exodus? 10. What is the common theme of our individual histories? 11. What is our goal? 12. What do we most need to hear? 13. What are our greatest spiritual fears? 14. If Moses knew us directly and gave us these books, what might his greatest fears for us be? 15.
