Circumcision and Name of Jesus Vol. 86 January 1, 2017 1 President: Art Matia Secretary: Kathy Christopher MISSION OF ST. LUCAS BRING PEOPLE TO CHRIST - NURTURE PEOPLE IN CHRIST - EQUIP PEOPLE FOR CHRIST WE WELCOME all guests who are worshipping with us this morning. We pray that God will work through His Word and strengthen you in your faith, drawing you closer to Him. This morning we celebrate the Lord s Supper-a gift from God Himself as, through the true body and blood of Jesus, we receive forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of our faith. As a gift from God, we hold the Lord s Supper sacred and wish to celebrate it in the unity of faith which God calls us to. If you are visiting with us today and wish to partake of the Lord s Supper, please talk with the pastor before the service this morning. If you would like more information on the ministry of St. Lucas, please fill out a welcome card in the pew and place it in the offering plate and someone will contact you this week. SILENT PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP We ask for Your help, Lord, as we come here to worship. Help us as we listen, that we may not close our ears to truth that makes us uncomfortable. Help us as we sing, that we may mean with our minds what we say with our lips. Help us as we give, that we may give in a manner which properly reflects our blessings. Amen. Prayer Ministry: Emily Tacony WOL Staff: Melissa Bergholt - Sixth Grade, Katie Eyster - Seventh Grade 1

CIRCUMCISION AND NAME OF JESUS St. Lucas Ev. Lutheran Church January 1, 2017 RINGING OF THE BELLS WORDS OF WELCOME AND ANNOUCEMENTS OPENING SONG Sing We Now of Christmas Sing we now of Christmas, Noel sing we here! Listen to our praises to the Babe so dear. REFRAIN: Sing we Noel, the King is born, Noel! Sing we now of Christmas, sing we all Noel! Shepherds on the hillside heard the angels sing: Glory, honor, praises to the infant King. Refrain. In the town they found Him; Son of Mary mild. Sleeping in a manger was the Holy Child. Refrain. Wise Men sought and found Him, treasures did they bring; Bowing down they worshiped Christ, the King of kings. Refrain. THE SHARING OF THE PEACE The people may greet one another in the name of the Lord, saying, Peace be with you, as a sign of reconciliation and of the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Matt. 5:22 24; Eph. 4:1 3). 2

How Majestic 1992. Michael S. Smith. Meadowgreen Music. Co. Used by permission. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise Your name. O Lord, we magnify Your name: Prince of Peace, mighty God; O Lord God Almighty. INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen PRAYER FOR WORSHIP OLD TESTAMENT READING Numbers 6:22-27 22 The LORD said to Moses, 23 Tell Aaron and his sons, This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: 24 The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. 27 So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Galatians 3:23 29 23 Before the coming of this faith, [a] we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. 3

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 2:21 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. 21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Lord. CONFESSION OF FAITH Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and 4

sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: If You, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? People: But with You there is forgiveness, that You may be feared. Pastor: Let us heed the call of the Lord through John the Baptist to repent to turn from our sins and turn to Jesus Christ, our Savior, through whom we find true and lasting hope. 6

People: Merciful Father, we have turned away from You and sinned against You in our thoughts, words, and actions. We have not loved You above all things, and have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.
