Amen. Let us confess our sin, calling for God s transforming power. Silence for reflection Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Hymn #835 All Creatures, Worship God Most High! Greeting The grace of our LORD Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Hymn of Praise Prayer of the Day Let us pray Sovereign God, you have created us to live in loving community with one another. Form us for life that is faithful and steadfast, and teach us to trust like little children, that we may reflect the image of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and LORD. Amen. First Lesson: Genesis 2:18-24

Psalm 8 Sung responsively Tone 6 1 O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! 2 you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of in- fants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, 4 what are mere mortals that you should be mind- ful of them, human beings that you should care for them? 5 Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and hon- or you crown them. 6 You have made them rule over the works of your hands; you have put all things un- der their feet: 7 all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths of the sea. 9 O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Second Lesson: Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12 Verse The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 10 th Chapter. The Holy Gospel: Mark 10:2-16 The Gospel of the LORD. Sermon Hymn #603 God, When Human Bonds Are Broken Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our LORD. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers Sharing of the Peace The peace of the LORD be with you always. And also with you. Response : hear our prayer. Offering Come to the Banquet, My Friends Dave Williamson Offering is gathered for the poor and those with needs in our community and world. Offertory Response #884 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow, praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heav nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Offertory Prayer God of life, you give us these gifts of the earth, these resources of our life and our labor. Take them, offered in great thanksgiving, and use them to set a table that will heal the whole creation, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Light. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Invitation to Holy Communion Speak to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, and make us one with you. Lamb of God It is indeed right and salutary we praise your name and join unending hymn: Eucharistic Prayer The pastor offers the prayer. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; Holy Communion Tether Hymn: #470 Draw Us In the Spirit s Blessing The Body and Blood of our LORD Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. Prayer Let us pray Holy and compassionate God, in bread and wine you give us gifts that form us to be humble and courageous. May your words come to life in our serving and in our witness, that we might speak a living voice of healing and justice to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our rock and our redeemer. Amen.

Benediction God, creator of all things, speaking reformation into being; Jesus Christ, savior of the world, raising the dead; Holy Spirit, living voice, calling and enlightening the church: Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen. HYMN #656 Blest Be the Tie That Binds Dismissal Go in peace. Sound the good news. Thanks be to God. WELCOME TO ALL IN THE NAME OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST! We especially welcome those who are visiting. We invite you to sign our guest register in the narthex. Blank envelopes in the pews are for visitors. God s purpose for St. Paul s Lutheran Blue Church is to spread the Good News of Christ s love for all people in the Southern Lehigh community and beyond. Blue Church Mission Statement, adopted 2012 THE DAY IN THE CHURCH YEAR.THE 20 th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST ABOUT THE SCRIPTURE READINGS.. Today s gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable with a story we find comforting. Jesus saying on divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God s law. Jesus rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a child does? GENESIS 2:18-24: Genesis 2 stresses that people are not meant to live isolation but in relationship. Out of love for humanity, God creates them male and female, to provide companionship for each other and to become with each other one flesh. The Hebrew words used here are ish (man) and ishshah (woman) HEBREWS 1:-4; 2:5-12: Quoting from the psalms, this passage from Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus, the one through whom God created everything and who sits at God s right hand, is also the one who experienced human suffering and death in order to blaze the path of salvation for us. MARK 10:2-16: Jesus announced and enacted in history the new reality of God s surprising activity. These two stories demonstrate this new reality: Women and children are accepted and valued, not dismissed as inferior to adult men. PRAYER FOR PENTECOST 20: God speaks to us through the Son. (Hebrews 1:2) PRAYER FOR THE WEEK: Lord our God, help us to receive your kingdom as little children, trusting in your mercy and grace. Amen. PLEASE NOTE: - For those people wishing to take Holy Communion without wine, there are four cups in the center of the Communion tray with grape juice. BLUE CHURCH PRAYS FOR..Sick/Recovering: Claire Biser, Roman Denora, Joel Hammond, Hattie Smith, Irmi Note: This is a short-term list, for those who are in acute care situations hospitalized or in recovery, dying, facing the recent death of a loved one, or presently facing a severe life crisis. Genesis 2:18-24 First Reading 18 Then the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner. 19 So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field; but for the man * there was not found a helper as his partner. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called Woman, * for out of Man * this one was taken. 24 Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.
