Amen. A A A Joined to hrist in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God s mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus hrist. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus hrist our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen! Gathering Song # 455 rashing Waters at reation

2 Litany for the Baptism of our Lord Sunday At creation, a wind from God swept over the waters, and the world was brought to life. At the Jordan, a wind from God's Spirit swept over the waters, and the baptized hrist was declared the Son of the Father. At our own baptisms, the Holy Spirit's breath swept into our being, and through water and the Word, we became God's very own. Hymn of raise Arise and Shine Apostolic Greeting Arise shine; for the Light has come! The glory of the Lord has risen upon us! We gather in the name in which we are baptized, the name of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. We give thanks to God. rayer of the Day page 215

Word 3 [lease be seated] First Reading Genesis 1:1-5 Out of chaos, God brings order. Out of the primeval darkness, God brings light. This familiar story was good news for the Israelites, who experienced much chaos in their history. It remains good news for any person living in the chaos and darkness of despair. God created and continues to create new life. salm 29 Read Responsively A salm of David. A summons to all creatures to worship God whose glory is seen in the storm s splendor A Give the LORD glory, you spirits! Give glory! Honor God's strength! Honor the name of the LORD! Bow when the LORD comes, majestic and holy. A God's voice thunders above the massive seas; powerful, splendid, God shatters the cedars, shatters the cedars of Lebanon, makes Lebanon jump like a calf, Sirion like a wild ox. A God's voice strikes fire, makes the desert shudder, Qadesh shudder in labor, deer writhe in labor. God strips the trees. All shout Glory in your temple, LORD. A For you rule the mighty waters, you rule over all forever. Give strength to your people, LORD, and bless your people with peace. Second Reading Acts 19:1-7 In Ephesus, aul encounters people who had received John s baptism of repentance but had never heard of the Holy Spirit or of baptism in the name of Jesus. After aul baptized them, the Holy Spirit came upon them and empowered them with gifts of the Spirit. [lease stand] Gospel Acclamation # 212 You Belong to hrist Gospel Mark 1:4-11 Mark s gospel reports the story of Jesus baptism with some irony: the one on whom the Spirit descends is himself the one who will baptize others with the Holy Spirit. Gospel Response The Gospel of the Lord for you this day. Thanks be to God.

4 [lease be seated] hildren s Sermon Sermon astor Matthew Kruse [lease stand] Reaffirmation of Baptism Sisters and Brothers in hrist, the promises of God s grace are signed and sealed to us in our baptism. In baptism God promises by grace alone to forgive our sin; to adopt us into the body of hrist, the church; to send the Holy Spirit daily to renew and cleanse us; and to resurrect us to eternal life. This promise is made visible in the water of baptism. Water cleanses, purifies, sustains; Jesus hrist is living water. [Water is poured into the font.] Through baptism hrist calls us to new obedience: to love and trust God completely; to forsake the evil of the world; and to live a new and holy life. I invite you now to remember God s promise, to turn away from all that is evil, and to reaffirm your faith in Jesus hrist and your commitment to hrist s church. Renunciations & Affirmations Trusting in the gracious promises of God, do you renounce sin and the power of evil in your life and in the world? I renounce them. Who is your Lord and Savior? Jesus hrist is my Lord and Savior. Will you be hrist s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love? God being my helper, I will. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus hrist, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus hrist, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead.

5 On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic hurch, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Thanksgiving at the Font The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, O holy and gracious God, for the gift of water. In the beginning of creation your Spirit moved over the waters. In the waters of the flood you destroyed evil. You led the children of Israel through the sea into freedom of the romised Land. In the river Jordan, John baptized our Lord and your Spirit anointed him. By his death and resurrection Jesus hrist, the living water, frees us from sin and death and opens the way to life everlasting. We thank you, O God, for the gift of baptism. In the waters of baptism you confirm to us that we are buried with hrist in his death, raised to share in his resurrection, and are being renewed by the Holy Spirit. our out upon us and on your whole church the gift of your Holy Spirit, so that all who have passed through the waters of Baptism might be dead to sin and alive to God in hrist Jesus. To God be all honor and glory, dominion and power, now and forever, through Jesus hrist our Lord. Baptismal harge Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. [Ephesians 4:1-2] Amen.

6 Hymn of the Day # 451 We Are Baptized in hrist Jesus [rayer ards will be collected during the Hymn of the Day] rayers of Intercession Filled with the power of the Holy Spirit through baptism, let us come before the throne of God to offer prayers for the needs of the church and world. Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. Into your hands, we lay our prayers, trusting in your mercy through the one who showed us your face, Jesus hrist, our Lord. Amen.
