University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship February 5, 2017 5:00pm 6th Sunday After Christmas << INVITED>> Oh Our Lord David Leonard, Leslie Jordan & Paul Baloche Oh oh oh our Lord Oh oh oh our Lord How majestic is your name in all the earth We behold the breaking dawn The light that shines over everyone We look to you, we long for you Oh Lord We behold the rising sun The earth awaits, your hope has come We look to you, we long for you Oh Lord We behold the falling rain Like waters rise, flood this place We reach for you, we cling to you Oh Lord Oh, your name is a light in the darkness Oh, your name is the word of truth Oh, your name; oh, your name (repeat) Welcome Holy Spirit Bryan Torwalt and Katie Torwalt There's nothing worth more that will ever come close No thing can compare You're our living hope Your Presence I've tasted and seen of the sweetest of loves Where my heart becomes free and my shame is undone In Your Presence Lord Holy Spirit You are welcome here Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere Your glory God is what our hearts long for To be overcome by Your Presence Lord
(Your Presence Lord) (Your Presence) (Oh God how we love Your Presence Lord) Let us become more aware of Your Presence Let us experience the glory of Your goodness (Lord) How He Loves John Mark McMillan He is jealous for me loves like a hurricane I am a tree bending beneath The weight of his wind and mercy When all of a sudden I am unaware of These afflictions eclipsed by glory I realize just how beautiful you are And how great your affections are for me (Yeah) He loves us Oh how he loves (repeat) We are his portion and he is our prize Drawn to redemption by the grace in his eyes If grace is an ocean we're all sinking So Heaven meets earth Like a sloppy wet (unforeseen) kiss And my heart turns violently inside of my chest I don't have time to maintain these regrets When I think about the way that He loves us Oh how he loves (repeat) Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon How Deep the Father s Love for Us Stuart Townend How deep the Father s love for us, how vast beyond all measure, That he should give his only Son, to make a wretch his treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns his face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One bring many souls to glory. Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders,
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers; It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom, But I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection. Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom. Invitation to Children s Worship Announcements & Greeting Time <<ENCOUNTERED>> Doxology (hymn #809) Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer of Dedication Offertory: Brother The Brilliance When I look into the face of my enemy, I see my brother, I see my brother. Forgiveness is the garment of our courage The power to make the peace we long to know. Open up our eyes to see the wounds that bind all of humankind. May our shutter hearts greet the dawn of light with charity and love. When I look into the face of my enemy, I see my brother, I see my brother. Sermon: School of Love: Your Brother s Keeper Scott Gronholz Texts: 1 John 3:11-20 (p.990) 11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We must not be like Cain who was from the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. 13 Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. 16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 17 How does
God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? 18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 19 And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. <<SENT>> Response Song Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. The Bible teaches us that God is love and that the central purpose of our lives is to love. It's not hard to agree with the greatness of love. It's just that it is hard to really do. We don't need sentimentality or moralizing. We need help. The good news is that Jesus is our help and the good news of Jesus unlocks our hearts not just to love him but to love with him. So what can we learn from the apostle of love if we sit at his feet and learn what he has to teach us? How can believers live in intentional community designed to retrain our hearts in gospel love?
