May 22, 2016 HOLY COMMUNION 10:30 am INTRODUCTION TO THE DAY O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Today we celebrate the name of God: holy blessed Trinity. There is no other day quite like this one in the church s year. There is no other god like ours. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! SILENT PRAYER PRELUDE: Holy, Holy, Holy Farlee ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING (ENTRANCE RITE) Stand HYMN: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! # 413 CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (ABSOLUTION) All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism. P In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen. P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Page 1

Kneel/Stand P Most merciful God, C we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Stand GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. Page 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY P Let us pray. Almighty God our Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, renewing and fulfilling creation by your eternal Spirit, and revealing your glory through our Lord, Jesus Christ: Cleanse us from doubt and fear, and enable us to worship you, with your Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, living and reigning, now and forever. C Amen. Sit CHILDREN S SERMON LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 In the Bible, wisdom has many faces. It is portrayed in terms sometimes human and sometimes divine. Often, it is personified as feminine. In this passage, Woman Wisdom is depicted not only as the first creation of God but also as God s helper, rejoicing in God s creation, especially in human beings. A A reading from Proverbs. 1 Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? 2 On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: 4 To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. 22 The LORD created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Page 5

23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth 26 when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world s first bits of soil. 27 When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, 31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race. A The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. PSALM 8 (The congregation sings the verses in bold face type.) 1 O LORD our Lord, how exalted is your name in all the world! 2 Out of the mouths of in- fants and children your majesty is praised a- bove the heavens. 3 You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, to quell the enemy and the avenger. 4 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, 5 what is man that you should be mind- ful of him, the son of man that you should seek him out? 6 You have made him but little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glo- ry and honor; Page 6

7 you give him mastery over the works of your hands; you put all things un- der his feet: 8 all sheep and oxen, even the wild beasts of the field, 9 the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea. 10 O LORD our Lord, how exalted is your name in all the world! SECOND READING Romans 5:1-5 Paul describes the life of faith with reference to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Even now, we have peace with God through Jesus, and our hope for the future is grounded in the love of God that we experience through Christ s Holy Spirit. A A reading from Romans. 1 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. A The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The congregation sings the Acclamation. The choir sings the Verse. Page 7

Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; God s glory fills the whole earth. The congregation repeats the Acclamation. GOSPEL John 16:12-15 Jesus ongoing presence with the disciples will be borne by the coming Spirit, who will guide them and communicate to them Jesus will and glory. P The holy gospel according to John. C Glory to you, O Lord. [Jesus said,] 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. P The gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. Sit SERMON Pastor Weleck Stand HYMN OF THE DAY: All Glory Be to God on High # 410 ATHANASIAN CREED (read responsively) Whoever wants to be saved should above all cling to the catholic faith. Whoever does not guard it whole and inviolable Page 8

will doubtless perish eternally. Now this is the catholic faith: We worship one God in trinity and the Trinity in unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the divine being. For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Spirit is still another. But the deity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory, coeternal in majesty. What the Father is, the Son is, and so is the Holy Spirit. Uncreated is the Father; uncreated is the Son; uncreated is the Spirit. The Father is infinite; the Son is infinite; the Holy Spirit is infinite. Eternal is the Father; eternal is the Son; eternal is the Spirit: And yet there are not three eternal beings, but one who is eternal; as there are not three uncreated and unlimited beings, but one who is uncreated and unlimited. Almighty is the Father; almighty is the Son; almighty is the Spirit: And yet there are not three almighty beings, but one who is almighty. Page 9

Thus the Father is God; the Son is God; the Holy Spirit is God: And yet there are not three gods, but one God. Thus the Father is Lord; the Son is Lord; the Holy Spirit is Lord: And yet there are not three lords, but one Lord. As Christian truth compels us to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord, so catholic religion forbids us to say that there are three gods or lords. The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten; the Son was neither made nor created, but was alone begotten of the Father; the Spirit was neither made nor created, but is proceeding from the Father and the Son. Thus there is one Father, not three fathers; one Son, not three sons; one Holy Spirit, not three spirits. And in this Trinity, no one is before or after, greater or less than the other; but all three persons are in themselves, coeternal and coequal; and so we must worship the Trinity in unity and the one God in three persons. Whoever wants to be saved should think thus about the Trinity. It is necessary for eternal salvation Page 10

that one also faithfully believe that our Lord Jesus became flesh. For this is the true faith that we believe and confess: That our Lord Jesus Christ, God s Son, is both God and man. He is God, begotten before all worlds from the being of the Father, and he is man, born in the world from the being of his mother existing fully as God, and fully as man with a rational soul and a human body; equal to the Father in divinity, subordinate to the Father in humanity. Although he is God and man, he is not divided, but is one Christ. He is united because God has taken humanity into himself; he does not transform deity into humanity. He is completely one in the unity of his person, without confusing his natures. For as the rational soul and body are one person, so the one Christ is God and man. He suffered death for our salvation. He descended into hell and rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Page 11

At his coming all people shall rise bodily to give an account of their own deeds. Those who have done good will enter eternal life, those who have done evil will enter eternal fire. This is the catholic faith. One cannot be saved without believing this firmly and faithfully. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God s creation. A **WILL INSERT WHEN AVAILABLE** C hear our prayer. A We pray for the church, for its pastors and bishops, for the newly baptized, for all the faithful, for this congregation here gathered, and for our growth in grace. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A We pray for all nations, for all rulers, legislators, and judges, for an increase of justice in our lands, and for all who work for peace among nations and among peoples. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A We pray for all in any need, for the hungry and the homeless, for victims of war and injustice, for prisoners, for all who suffer in mind, body, or spirit, for the sick and infirm, for all with incurable illness, and for all who this day will die. We pray especially for those we name in the silence of our hearts... Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A We pray for the members of our armed forces wherever they serve, and especially when they serve in harm s way, that they might Page 12

speedily complete their mission and be safely reunited with their loved ones. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. P Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. C Amen. PEACE P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace, and may say Peace be with you or similar words. OFFERING PRAYER A Let us pray Merciful Father, C we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING The presiding minister greets the assembly and invites all present to give thanks: Page 14

The minister continues with the PROPER PREFACE: P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy Here the minister continues with the preface for the day, concluding: we praise your name and join their unending hymn: The assembly sings the SANCTUS: The minister continues with the WORDS OF INSTITUTION, usually included in a Eucharistic Prayer. P You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. Page 15

We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my + body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my + blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. P Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and the promise of his coming again, we give thanks to you, O Lord God Almighty, not as we ought but as we are able; we ask you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving and with your Word and Holy Spirit to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine, so that we and all who share in the body and blood of Christ may be filled with heavenly blessing and grace, and, receiving the forgiveness of sin, may be formed to live as your holy people and be given our inheritance with all your saints. Page 16

INVITATION TO COMMUNION P Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. C Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Sit COMMUNION When giving the bread and cup, the communion ministers say The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond R Amen. We Lutherans believe that the Body and Blood of Christ are truly and substantially present in, with, and under the forms of bread and wine. We invite to the communion all who are baptized and communing in this or another Christian denomination. We welcome children and others who are not communing to kneel at the altar rail for a blessing. The Body of Christ is received in the palm of the hand. The Blood of Christ is poured into a small glass which should be picked up on the way to the altar rail. Page 18

The Time of the Church is the season after Pentecost, beginning with and ending with Christ the King. These weeks focus on Christ s ministry and teaching. The Athanasian Creed is one of the three ecumenical creeds contained in the Book of Concord. (The Book of Concord is the collection of foundational theological documents that governs the Lutheran Church.) The other two, the Nicene and the Apostles creeds, lend themselves more readily to liturgical use. Custom does suggest the liturgical use of the Athanasian Creed on the festival of. The Athanasian Creed is named after St. Athanasius, a staunch defender of the Christian faith who lived in the 4th century. It was prepared to assist the Church in combating two errors that undermined Biblical teaching about God. One error denied that God s Son and the Holy Spirit are of one being or Godhead with the Father. The second error denied that Jesus is true God and true man in one person. The Athanasian Creed continues to serve the Christian Church as a standard of the truth. It declares that whoever rejects the doctrine of the Trinity and the doctrine of Christ is without saving faith. The liturgical color white, symbolic of purity, joy, and the light of Christ, is used on the festivals of Christ. Gold is a more festive version of white. Page 21
