F. B. TRACY y. m. c.. ARRVE FOR MEN U SLAND JOUR Kaua s to bo treated to one of the greatest treats that she has ovor had, tho comng, and tho talks of Captan Pequegnat and Mr. Sherman, tho Y. M. C. A. workers who have just returned from tho front, but recently. Mr. Sherman s not only a great orator, n tho hlgllest and most comprehensve sonso of the word; ho s a great actor, a tragedrfh, who sweeps hs hearers wth hm aganst ther wll. Ho s more than a word panter. Ho does more than pneturo n battle-feld- ; he takes you to tho battlefeld, and when ho starts back, wth hs hand over hs eyes you see wth hm hundreds and hundreds of reelng men, shattered, bleedng torn, maddened by shell shock. You whzz-banghear the ; you feel tho hss of tho bullets, almost, you smell the awful gasscs. Your really that you aro on the battlefeld wth hm. Captan Pequegnat served years and a half on tho west three front wth the Canadans, fnally beng put out of commsson by a boche gas attack whch lad hm out unconscous for fve days. He does not (lgure that he s out of t entrely however, and plans to roturn to the lnes when hs furlough ends. He s declared to be an entertaner of raro power, and certanly s ono of unusual experence. He asssted n organzng the Bed Trangles mob sngng and amusements among the Brtsh solders n France and Belgum, among the Canadans at home and n the tranng camps n the states., They wll arrve on Tuesday mornng and proceed to Kapaa School, where they wll address tho homesteaders and at Klauea n the afternoon. Hedemann,. who s connected wth tho Machnery department of Theo. H. Davles & Co., of Honolulu, came over on tho Knau, for a fow days last Frday. The McBryde Storo at Eleelo has mproved the looks of ther )nan salesroom wth the addton of three now "slent salesmen." The new cases are beautes and Mr. Roendahl says that surely do help sol the goods. Mr. B. D. Baldwn of Makawel, who owns a beach lot at Walohal Beach, Koloa, has started constructon of a beach home. Last Frday mornng, a Japanese rushed nto tho offce of the Sherff, lookng as though the whole German army was persung hm. After lookng suspcously n the corners and under the table he fnally managed to tell tho Sherff that ho wanted a warrant for tho arrest of one, Captan Matsuda of Sampan No. 79. After much questonng t was found out that he was a member of the crew of that boat and that on the evenng before tho Captan had mbbed a llttlo to much Sak and had chased hm all over tho boat. The other members of tho crew had tred to stop the Captan from takng tho lfo blood of our hero, but wore unavalng n ther efforts. So fnally when the Captan had hm cornered, he, decded that ho would rath-o- r be a "Jonah" and so left the sampan (vla tho water route. Ho sad that whlle ho was n the water that he could fec tho sharks rubbng up aganst hm as ho swam. Ater battlng wth the waves for about an hour and a half ho made a landng near the llghthouso and, then came to tho Sherff for protecton. So whle he stenographer was makng the warrant ready another Japanese slowded up and mmedately commenced to toll the Sherff that he had lost a man overboard n the harbor. By puttng two and two together the Sherff came to tho concluson that he had the mssng sampan Captan, and so escorted hm n to the presense of our hero. Thoy held a conversaton for several mnutes and fnally started, to leave tho olllce. But, sad the Sherff, "how about ths warrant, t s already for you to go before the Judge and swear to t. "No. no," sad the frst Japanese, (he s not our hero any longer) "he come all rght and get me, t he no como ttu?n wo have paper and go get hm." And then they went away together peacefully and happly. : o; County Commttee of. Y. M. C. A. Meet Tho County Commtteo of the Y. M. C. Sweaters and Socks are Greatest Need Kntters should spocd up the pro ducton of socks, and sweaters, says the local Bed Cross. Tho Amercan army n France s ncreasng and the men need the kntted artcles when they are n the trenches. Tho call has come to dsregard such artcles as helmets and mufflers for the tme beng and to concentrate on turnng out sweaters and socks as fabt as possble. CBAWFOBD Secretary HAWAAN GUARD MOBLZED SE E The glad word, t was glad word for some, came to tho commander of the Natonal Guard on Kaua to commence to moblze last Saturday. Whle the most of tho plantaton managers wll be caught n the labor stuaton, they havo had some llttlo tmo n whch to prepare for ths emergency and as several of thom sad, when approached on the labor subject, "f the government needs them guess that we can get along somehow. Ths s the rlgh t way for the plantaton people to look at tho stuaton and wo arc glad that thoy show ths sprt, for the government certanly does need tho mon othor-vs- e t would not call on them to leave ther postons and answer tho call to colors. When we count up the men on Kaua that aro n the guard wo fnd that there aro nearly 600 that havo answered ths call. Of the plantatons that are close to Lhue, tho Lhue Plantaton wll be ht the hardest loosng somewhere n tho neghborhood of 125 men, then come Hanama-ul- u wth about CO men. Of course there are other plantatons that wll loose a groat many men but wo wero unable to fnd out the exact fgures. No one seems to know Just when tho boys wll leave for Honolulu or just what thoy wll do when they got there. However wo prosumo that thoy wll undergo a course of ntensve tranng and then be UBd to replace the regular army for guard duty around Honolulu. Up to the tme- of gong to pres - no word had boon receved about tho draft and we are gong to guess agan on ths subject, and that la, that t wont be called untl the guard s fully organzed and then t wll bo recruted up to full war strength from the draft. Am whatever may be sad about the Food Admnstraton operatng under authorty we have granted them, no one s heard to complan that our armes here and n France and taly are not beng well fed. and that s almghty mportant. Nothng else matters so much at ths moment. f they are fed they wll hold out tll we can get more men and arshps and cannon and ammunton to them. What r our cvl populaton s called upon to forego and sacrfce am practce self denal, so long as our armes and alled armes are fed? And they are beng fed or you would hear of t, assure yon. f there exsted n any town n ths country such a thng as a woman claspng a half starved chld n her arms, whle she gazed at the body of her husband, who had been torn from ther home am shot, merly to carry out the doctrne of terrhleness there would not be a sngle person n ths country who could eat or sleep untl he or she had done somethng actual am dcfnate to help. We have that condton rght wth us not only n Relgum but also n the Alled countres. Our part t to gve hese people the food that they must have. Thngs have reached a pont where we are ether defnately for or aganst. f we are for these people who are gvng all they have n the world to keep the Teuton sprt from havng ts own way n the world, then we wll remember them at every meal as defnately as f we had the prvlege of sharng wth them at our own tables. What s the good of the Senate and of the House of Representatves f they cannot get together and pass the necessary laws of ths our Terrtory of Hawa? The legslature has just adjourned from a specal sesson that was called to do these; very thngs, and what dd they do? Nothng! 1assed a few unmportant measures and left he mportant ones go for the next sesson. Out of an appropraton of a lttle more than $10,000 t cost the Terrtory more than $7,000 to have these men go down to Honolulu and see the sghts and hear the latest war news. a us hope that at the next electon that the people; of ths Terrtory wll remember these thngs and vote accordngly. By Mss Else WUco The message sent out by Mr. Hoover of tb Food Admnstraton to be rend n all the churches throughout the Unted States on May 20th call upon all who are able to gve up the use of wheat absolutely untl the next harvest comes n. n the latter part of August. Ths 1b a voluntary measure, and t s recognzed by the Food Admnstraton that t can not be undertaken by ol. For many, especally for those amongst the workng classes. t would ental great hardshps. Ths s all the more reason however, that those able to do t should undertake t wth greater resoluton and enthusasm, and there s no doubt whatever that loyal Amercans wll quetly but frmly algn themselves, wth the Food Admnstraton n ths neessary measure. Ths s the test of our wllngness and ablty to sacrfce. The wbeatless weeks are upon us. Every day must be a whealless day. Hut, havng accustomed ourselves to two whealless days a week we should know Just how to meet the problem, and have only to extend the methods adopted for fhose days to all the days of the week. Thoughtful care and plantng are necessary on the part of the housewfe, and a few tmely suggestons are hereby offered. 1. Serve other starchy foods n place of bread, such as rsh and Sweet potatoes, taro, pol, rce, wheatless cereals, (commeal, homny, oatmeal, rolled oats, barley, etc.), bananas. 2. Use "quck breads." Yeast breads cannot be made only when wheat or rye flours are used to some extent n the mxture. The yeast wll not "work" satsfactorly wth the substtute flours alone. Wheat flour we wsh to go wthout, and rye flour has never been placed on the substtute lst and from the frst we have been asked to go sparng n ts use. Ths forces us to resort to the "quck or bakng powder breads," whch fortunately can be made entrely wthout wheat or rye flour b, are easly made, wholesome, and delcous. Many excellent recepes are gven us for barley bscuts, corn brads, barley, corn, and rce muffns, etc.. Barley Bakng powder bscuts made of barley-flou- r alone are delcous. Bake them n loaf form f your famly lkes slced bread. Ths also allows the slces to be made nto neat peces of toast. n makng corn bread, use any favorte recelpe, substtutng barley flour for the wheat flour called for. The barley flour holds the corn bread together. Pa or Manoc flour combned wth corn meal, half and half, makes a delcous crsp corn bread. Boston Brown Bread made from corn meul and barley flour wll make a nce change and be apprecated by your famly occasonally. AH ths requres bakng oftener than heretofore, and means addtonal work n the household, but let that be your share towards wnnng the war. A lttle experence n the managng s necessary untl adjust-mn- t to the new way of lvng s acheved n your famly, but lttle plans can easly be worked out. For nstance, f the housewfe wshes to bake but onco a day, she may start her famly out wth hot corn bread for breakfast, makng enough to serve the remander cold at luncheon. Many people use no bread for dnner, but f your famly feels the need of t, why not serve wth the soup some of the excellent wheatless crackers, such as Hoovcrettes, and Stables e Lvery, Drayng and Boardng Stable and Auto-Lver- y Busness, AUTOMOBLE STAGE-LN- E BETWEEN LHUE and KEKAHA Leavng L hue every Monday, Wednesday and Frday, Leavng Kekaha every Tuesday. Vary ths plan by servng hot muffns for lunch sometmes and toasted next mornng for breakfast. When you have baked beans, make a bg loaf of Boston lromn Bread, whch wll keep over the next day and s very good served cold. The and nterest of the famly wll do much toward smoothng the way for the housewfe n her efforts. Ktlclency on her part met by cheerfulness on thers wll pave the way to success. The Food Admnstraton ssues the followng: The treatment of nterned Ger mans n the Unted States s now beng used by German propagandsts n an effort to create unrest and dls satsfacton among the Amercan people. Through ther nsdous system of "grapevne" publcty, they are endeavorng to create the m presslon that the nterned Germans are beng fed on the. fat of the land that whle the Amercan people are beng asked to save wheat, the Ger man prsoners are beng prodgally fed on bread, pastres, and cakes made entrely of wheat. Ther ran pagn has been drected largely to the rural dstrcts, and n some sec lons has aroused more or less d ssatsfacton.... Rumors Offcally Dened The Food Admnstraton has of fclally dened the truth of such ru mors. The Germans nterned n Am ercan detenton camps are beng well fed, but there s absolutely no ground for a rumor that food s beng wasted, or that conservaton la Hot beng practced. When rubber cement has stood ex posed to the ar, even for a short tme, t becomes so thck that t does not gve good results n applcaton. Maly motorsts thn cement wth gasolne, tout th ordnary grades of gasolne contan consderable ol, whch has a decdedly adverse acton on the cement. Hgh test gasolne or bsulphte of carbon s best to use for thnnng. :0: When t s necessary to back up a car nto place by pushng, the frst thng on whch most drvers settle s the radator cap. Ths s rather a dangerous practce, for the exerton of such heavy pressure aganst ths part s lkely to break t off. The radator hose conncton should be frequen tlynspected. Qute often these look good from the nsde. When the walls of the house become decayed they have a tendency to swell and close, thereby preventng proper crculaton. When the radator leaks t s not advsable to use materal to stop the leaks from the nsde. Such foregn matter has a tendency to close the radator and cause overheatng. A temporary repar can usuall be made from the outsde, and then at the frst opportunty a permanent repar should be made by an experenced mechanc. AVOD KEROSENE N WASH WATER. J. P. Clapper of the Kaua Garage, and local sellng agent of Mchelln Tres, sa that washng tres and washng a car are two dfferent prop ostons. Water alone should be us ed to wash tres and as lttle of t as necessary. After every run the tres should be wped clean wth a damp sponge or a well wrung cloth. A common method when washng a car s to mx kerosene wth the wa ter. Ths may be advsable when washng the woodwork, to remove mud and dust from the varnsh, but no kerosene should be permtted to reach the tres, because kerosene eats rubber. Ths fact can readly be proven by mmersng a small pece of rubber n, kerosene and allow t to soax. The rubber wll soon swell and lose ts elastcty. The reason for ths s apparent. Kero sene s rch n fatty propertes whch reman after the evaporaton of the passes. Every tme a tre s washed wth a kerosene mxture the rubber s deprved of more of ts strength. When washng tres t s best to use a damp sponge and clean water, care beng taken that the sponge s not soaked and drppng. After wash ng the tres they should be wped dry wth a cloth or a handful of waste. As.a general rule, grease cups are not gven the ntellgent care they should receve. Those under the engne hood and n a farly warm place requre only an occasonal twst, for the heat keeps the grease farly soft, and t s drawn., nto the bearngs by the rotaton of the shafts. Grease cups whch are outsde, however, where the ar keeps the grease, almost sold, requre frequent attenton. : o : TO REMOVE TAR FROM BODY. t s hardly possble to drve a machne over newly tarred roads or pavements wthout gettng at least some of the tar on the body. t treated n tme the spots dlf-futo remove. The machne should are not be washed to elmnate all the grt, and carefully dred wth chamos, so that the tar wll not smear. A lttle vasolne appled over each spot and worked n wth the fngers wll help to remove the stans. A thorough wash wth body soap and a fnsh polsh n the usual manner completes the operaton. Arche Kaaua. stellar cow ropers wll contend agapst all comers, and the slands cleverest broncho busters wll rde outlaw horses n a contest for the Hawaan champonshp, s an assured attracton for Monday and Tuesday afternoons. These events alone are expected to draw crowds that wll test the capacty of the grandstand and bleachers. The r touvnament, massed band concert, charot races, 25th nfantry entertanment, all are features of the frst class, but these are j only a few of the several score of events provded for the crowds ut- - tendng the Fur.
