Unshakeable In Life PSALM 16

PSALM 16:8-9 8 I always let the Lord guide me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

PSALM 16:8-9 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices; my body also rests securely.

PSALM 16:1 1 Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you.

How does our joy and confidence in God grow?

Key Thought: If you live long enough, you will find yourself in many difficult situations.

Alcohol may be man s worst enemy.

Alcohol may be man s worst enemy. But Jesus says to love your enemy.

How does our joy and confidence in God grow?

ANSWER: You must continually set the Lord before you.

PSALM 16:8 (ESV) 8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

THREE PRINCIPLES: a. Challenging situations tend to make us functionally forgetful.

THREE PRINCIPLES: b. Functional forgetfulness is at the heart of spiritual dysfunction

2 PETER 1:8-9 8 The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 PETER 1:8-9 9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.

HEBREWS 2:1 1 For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.

People need to be reminded more than they need to be instructed. -Samuel Johnson

THREE PRINCIPLES: c. Prayer is the act of setting the Lord before me.

EXULTING: having or expressing feelings of joy or triumph

How did David set the Lord before him?

David is thinking and speaking great and true thoughts about God.

7 Great Thoughts About God

PSALMS 16:1 1 Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you.

THOUGHT 1: God is my refuge.

PSALMS 16:2a 2a I said to the Lord, You are my Lord.

THOUGHT 2: God is my Lord.

PSALM 16:2 2 I said to the Lord, You are my Lord; I have nothing good besides you.

THOUGHT 3: God is my highest good.

PSALM 16:2 2 I said to the Lord, You are my Lord; I have nothing good besides you.

great health + $ + fame + winning the World Series + great marriage + healthy kids + good reputation God =

THOUGHT 4: There is no hope anywhere else.

PSALM 16:4 4 The sorrows of those who take another god for themselves will multiply; I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood, and I will not speak their names with my lips.

THOUGHT 5: God is my greatest joy and blessing.

PSALM 16:5 5 Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future.

PSALM 16:11 11 You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures.

I was created for?

THOUGHT 6: God holds my future and will do good to me

PSALM 16:5 5 Lord, you are my portion and my cup of blessing; you hold my future.

PSALM 16:6 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

ROMANS 8:31-39 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

ROMANS 8:31-39 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

ROMANS 8:31-39 33 Who shall bring any charge against God s elect? It is God who justifies.

ROMANS 8:31-39 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died more than that, who was raised who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

ROMANS 8:31-39 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

ROMANS 8:31-39 36 As it is written, For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

ROMANS 8:31-39 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

ROMANS 8:31-39 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,

ROMANS 8:31-39 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

THOUGHT 7 : God is with me, therefore I will not be shaken

PSALM 16:7 7 I will bless the Lord who counsels me even at night when my thoughts trouble me.

PSALM 16:8 8 I always let the Lord guide me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

PSALM 16:9-10 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices; my body also rests securely.

PSALM 16:9-10 10 For you will not abandon me to Sheol; you will not allow your faithful one to see decay.

What is David afraid of?

DEATH

How can you face death with confidence?

APPLICATION 1. Set the Lord always before you.

APPLICATION 2. Exult in who God is for us.
