Call to Worship Worship begins with God who invites us and welcomes us into his presence. Because of Christ, we can approach God with boldness even though we are sinful and weak. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: 1 Chronicles 16:28-33 Leader: Attribute to the LORD, O clans of the peoples, attribute to the LORD glory and strength! All: Attribute to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. Leader: Tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it All: shall never be moved. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, The LORD reigns! Leader: Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. *JESUS SHALL REIGN - Hymn #441 Jesus shall reign where'er the sun does his successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more. To him shall endless prayer be made, and praises throng to crown his head; His Name, like sweet perfume, shall rise with ev'ry morning sacrifice. People and realms of ev'ry tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song; And infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his Name. *BE THOU MY VISION - Hymn #642 Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art - thou my best thought, by day or by night; waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord. Thou my great Father; I thy true son, thou in me dwelling and I with thee one. Be thou my battleshield, sword for my fight; Be thou my dignity, thou my delight, Thou my soul s shelter, thou my high tow r: Raise thou me heav nward, O Pow r of my pow r Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise; thou mine inheritance, now and always; thou and thou only first in my heart, high King of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all. Benediction Just as worship begins with God s call, it ends with God sending us into the world with his word of grace. We go forth to live and serve by the power of his grace, not our own strength. Blessings abound where'er he reigns; the pris'ner leaps to lose his chains, The weary find eternal rest, and all the sons of want are blest. *BENEDICTION Let ev'ry creature rise and bring glory and honor to our King, Angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud Amen. The Lord s Supper The gospel is not only heard, but visibly seen as God invites us to commune with him at his table. In the Lord s Supper we remember and experience Jesus saving work. *NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS - Hymn #307 What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. O precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; no other fount I know; nothing but the blood of Jesus. For my cleansing, this I see: nothing but the blood of Jesus. For my pardon this my plea: nothing but the blood of Jesus. Nothing can for sin atone: nothing but the blood of Jesus. Naught of good that I have done: nothing but the blood of Jesus. This is all my hope and peace: nothing but the blood of Jesus. This is all my righteousness: nothing but the blood of Jesus. Now by this I ll overcome, nothing but the blood of Jesus. Now by this I ll reach my home, nothing but the blood of Jesus. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION *GOD OF WONDERS Lord of all creation, of water, earth and sky. The heavens are your tabernacle; glory to the Lord on high. God of wonders beyond our galaxy you are holy, holy. The universe declares your majesty; you are holy, holy. Lord of heaven and earth. Lord of heaven and earth. Early in the morning, I will celebrate the light. When I stumble in the darkness, I will call your name by night. (Bridge) Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth. Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth. Hallelujah to the Lord of heaven and earth. You are holy, holy. God of wonders beyond our galaxy you are holy, holy. Precious Lord reveal your heart to me; you are holy, holy. The universe declares your majesty; you are holy, holy. Lord of heaven and earth. Lord of heaven and earth. *PRAYER OF PRAISE - 10 - - 3 -

Call to Confession We all sin daily, in thought and word and deed. As we come into God s presence, we acknowledge how we have rebelled against our King and seek his forgiveness. *WEARY OF EARTH, MYSELF AND SIN Weary of earth, myself and sin, dear Jesus set me free, And to Your glory take me in, for there I long to be. Let a poor laborer here below, when from his toil set free; To rest and peace eternal go; for there I long to be. Burdened, dejected and oppressed, ah! Where shall I flee, But to Your arms for peace and rest? For there I long to be. Empty, polluted, dark and vain, is all this world to me; May I the better world obtain; for there I long to be. (Chorus 2x) Weary of earth, myself and sin, dear Jesus set me free. COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Proverbs 7:1-3 My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. All: Merciful Father, cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from our proud thoughts and our vain desires. We often treat your word and your commandments far too lightly. We always want your promises but we hold back from walking in true and heartfelt obedience. We are quick to bind ourselves to lesser goods, and not treasure your teachings as the apple of our eye. Lord, we come to you confessing this as sin, confiding in your grace, and finding our refuge and strength through Jesus Christ your Son. Sermon Questions For Further Reflection 1. How does this account demonstrate the conflict between a God who sets up the king, and a king who sets up gods? How does this statue in ch. 3 likely relate to the statue of his dreams in ch. 2? 2. Did their deliverance ultimately change the King s heart? Compare v29 with 4:34-37. 3. How does this statue compare to the building of the tower of Babel? 4. Notice how many times it is said that the king set up. Why is that? 5. The fourth man in the furnace has been traditionally interpreted by Christians as a pre-incarnate appearance of the Son of God. How is this connection usually made? 6. God s grace is sufficient for the trials we face as we face them. Which means his deliverance comes in the midst of the trial. And God is the one who determines what that deliverance will look like. What are ways we try to get around this at times? 7. There are dangers of having a civil religion as Christians. Consider this statement from 1936: One cannot be a good German and the same time deny God, but an arousal of faith in the eternal German is at the same time an arousal of faith in the eternal God Whoever serves Adolf Hitler, the Fuhrer, serves Germany, and whoever serves Germany serves God. Herr Balder von Schirach. 8. How are we shown a picture of the gospel in this account? 9. The Lord does not stand far off from his people in their hour of need but promises to be with us. How does this both comfort us and stretch us? Sermon God addresses and speaks to us by the reading and preaching of his Word. Both Christians and non- Christians need to hear the good news of salvation and grow in it. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN - 4 - - 9 -

28 Nebuchadnezzar said, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. 29 Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way." 30 Then the king promoted [them] in the province of Babylon. I. A Time to say No Sermon Outline The Cost of Saying No - Daniel 3:1-30 DECLARATION OF GRACE: Psalm 32:1-2 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit. *BE STILL MY SOUL - Hymn #689 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side; Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; Leave to your God to order and provide; In ev'ry change he faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: your best, your heav'nly Friend Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. Be still, my soul: thy God will undertake To guide the future as he has the past. Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below. II. A God who says Yes Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart, And all is darkened in the vale of tears, Then shall you better know his love, his heart, Who comes to soothe your sorrow and your fears. Be still, my soul: your Jesus can repay From his own fullness all he takes away. Be still, my soul: the hour is hast'ning on When we shall be for ever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored. Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last. - 8 - - 5 -

Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus, love of every love the best! 'Tis an ocean vast of blessing, 'tis a haven sweet of rest! Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus - 'tis heaven of heavens to me; and it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee! Daniel: Living in Babylon Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. The Cost of Saying No - Daniel 3:1-30 (ESV) 1 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold,... 4 And the herald proclaimed aloud, "You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6 And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace."... 8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews. 9 They declared... 12 There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up." 13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, "Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up?... if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?... and [they] said to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up." 19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury,...he ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he ordered some of the mighty men of his army to bind...and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace...and they were thrown into the burning fiery furnace. 22 Because the king's order was urgent and the furnace overheated, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23 And these three men,... fell bound into the burning fiery furnace. 24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished and rose up in haste. He declared to his counselors, "Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?" They answered and said to the king, "True, O king." 25 He answered and said, "But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods." 26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace; he declared, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here!" Then [they] came out from the fire. 27 And...the king's counselors gathered together and saw that the fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men. The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. continued next page - 6 - - 7 -
