LIFE OF CHRIST from the gospel of Mark Lesson 3 Jesus heals many Mark 1:21-34 Created for use with young, unchurched learners Adaptable for all ages including adults Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark

Jesus Heals Many Mark 1:21-34 Younger Verse Older Verse We saw his glory. John 1:14b We saw his glory the glory that belongs to the only Son of the Father. Lesson Goals Opener Learn that Jesus has power over evil spirits See that Jesus healed many sick people who came to Him Recognize that Jesus still has power to help us today When you are sick, do your parents try to help you get well? Do they take you to the doctor and/or give you medicine? Does your Mom make you chicken noodle soup or give you juice to drink? Today we will learn how Jesus made people well. Bible Story Please note: This portion of the lesson is given to help in teaching the lesson. Please read through the story and read it in the Bible. Do NOT read from this piece of paper. Instead, make a note sheet and place it next to the story in the Bible. Last week, we learned that Jesus chose some men to be his followers. Do you remember their names? (James, John, Simon, and Andrew) Jesus took His new friends to a place called Capernaum. While they were there, they went to a special place called a synagogue. This is a building where people gather together to pray and learn about God. They went there on the Sabbath day. This was the day that everybody went to church. What do you think Jesus did once He went inside? (wait for responses) He began teaching the people. Wouldn t it be exciting to hear Jesus teach?! It certainly was for the people there. They were amazed as they listened to Him. They had never heard anyone teach the way Jesus did. He seemed to have such wisdom more than the normal teachers. A man with an evil spirit was at the synagogue as well. The evil spirit made the man shout at Jesus. Jesus of Nazareth! What do you want? Have you come to destroy us? I know that you are God s Holy One! shouted the man. Then Jesus told the evil spirit to be quiet and to leave the man s body. Instantly, the spirit left the man! When all the people saw this, they were amazed with His power to make the evil spirit go away. After this, news about Jesus spread throughout the land. Jesus and His followers left the synagogue and went to Simon and Andrew s home. Simon s mother-in-law was very sick. When they got inside, she was lying in her bed. She had a fever. Jesus walked over to the side of her bed. He held her hand and helped her to stand up. Do you know what happened? Her fever was gone because Jesus had healed her! Right then she began to serve the people in the house. Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark 2

That evening, once the sun had set, many people came to see Jesus. These people had already been told what Jesus did. Do you know why they came? They wanted Jesus to help their friends who were sick. Jesus healed people of many different sicknesses. He also sent evil spirits out of people, like He had done with the man in the synagogue. The people must have been so grateful to Jesus for helping them to feel better. Jesus healed them because he cared for and loved everybody. It is important to see in this story that Jesus was, and still is, able to do these things because He is God s Son. We know that He loves us because He gave up His life for us on the cross. When He did that, He gave us a way to heal our heart. Our heart can be cleaned of all our sins if we ask Him for forgiveness. We also see the example of Jesus and Simon s mother-in-law being servants to those people around them. Being helpful and taking care of others is a way of being a servant. If you want to know more about Jesus or how you can be a servant, please talk with me after we pray. Review Questions 1. Why were the people amazed at Jesus teaching? (He taught with more wisdom than the normal teachers.) 2. Jesus healed a man in the synagogue. What was wrong with the man? (He had an evil spirit in him.) 3. Who was sick at Simon s house? (his mother-in-law) How did Jesus heal her? (He helped her to stand up, and she was healed.) 4. Many people showed up at Simon s house after sunset. Why did they come? (They wanted Jesus to heal them.) Was Jesus able to help them? (Yes he healed them.) Prayer Time Thank God that He has power over everything, including evil. Pray that we will have faith in Him in every situation. In today s lesson, the new disciples experienced Jesus glory in many ways. First, they heard Him teach with the authority only God s Son could have. Next, they saw His power to send an evil spirit out of a man. Then they were there and saw Him instantly heal Simon s mother-in-law. And finally, they experienced a night of miraculous healings of all types of sicknesses. John was one of the disciples to be with Jesus at this time. And he is the one who wrote, We saw His glory the glory that belongs to the only Son of the Father. If we have accepted Christ, we are His disciples. We can experience His glory when we worship Him, when we serve others, and when we see others accept Him into their lives. When a person s life is changed by Jesus, we see His glory! Preschool Lesson for Jesus Heals Many Bring some bandages or some empty pill bottles to use for acting out the story. One day Jesus and His friends went to a special building where people learned about God and prayed. Jesus was very excited about being there. He was going to get to teach all the people there about God. As the people listened (have them cup their ears like listening), they got excited, too! (cheer) While He was there, a man came who had an evil spirit in him. The evil spirit would make the man do strange things. The man shouted, Jesus! What do you want? I know that you are God s Son! Jesus knew that the evil spirit was talking. Jesus said to the man, Be quiet! Then He told the spirit to leave the man s body. Suddenly, the evil spirit was gone! Everyone there was amazed. (Make surprised faces) After seeing this, everyone started telling their friends about what Jesus did. (Ask the person next to you, Did you see what happened? ) Then Jesus and His friends left the special building. They went to see Simon s mother-in-law. That is another name for the mother of Simon s wife. Some people had told them she was very sick. She had a fever. (Put your hand over your forehead). Jesus went over to her bed. What do you think He did? He held her hand and helped her to stand up. Do you know what? Jesus made her feel better! (cheer) Right away she began to serve food to the people in the house. (Pretend to pass out something) That evening, many people came to see Jesus because they also were sick. Jesus helped them, too! Isn t it great that Jesus was able to help so many people feel better? Jesus is always here for you and me as well. No matter how we are feeling, we can know that Jesus wants to be there beside us. If you want Jesus to be with you, all you need to do is ask Him. Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark 4

Hands-on Activities for Jesus Heals Many Bring a first aid kit. As you hold up each object, ask children if they know how the item is used. Discuss how Jesus is better than a first aid kit. He didn t even need one to heal all those people! Bring a thermometer and take the kids temperature. Be sure to sterilize the thermometer after each child! Make a thermometer out of a craft stick. Write a digital read-out on the end of the stick. For younger kids, make a doctor kit. Fold a piece of paper in half and tape useful things like cotton swabs, bandages, and cotton balls in the bag. Share how doctors help people feel better. Remind the children that God can use doctors to heal us. Just like Jesus went to other places to teach and preach about God, we must help tell others about Jesus. Ask the kids questions about Jesus and see how much they REALLY know. This is a great time to encourage your kids and help them know what the Bible says! Mission Arlington/Mission Metroplex Curriculum/Life of Christ/Gospel of Mark 5
