Transcription:

Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! We thank God that you have joined us this morning for worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the Sermon Hymn which follows the Children s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions. Ministers Rev. Dr. Thomas Rogers... Senior Pastor Rev. Glenn Lucas... WELCOME Worship Service of Word and Song Seventh Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, July 8, 2018 10:15 a.m. OPENING CONGREGATIONAL SONG Please stand. Your Grace Is Enough Great is Your faithfulness, O God. You wrestle with the sinner s restless heart, You lead us by still waters into mercy. And nothing can keep us apart. So, remember Your people, Remember Your children. Remember Your promise, O God. Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough for me. Great is Your love and justice, God of Jacob. You use the weak to lead the strong. You lead us in the song of Your salvation, And all Your people sing along. So, remember Your people, Remember Your children. Remember Your promise, O God. Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough for me. Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough for me. So, remember Your people, Remember Your children. Remember Your promise, O God. Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough for me. Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough, Your grace is enough for me. Words & Music by Matt Maher Copyright 2003 spiritandsong.com Used by Permission. All Rights Reserved. CCLI #4477026 INVOCATION Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand. Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. 2

Pastor: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Pastor: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word and call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM ORDER OF BAPTISM Invocation Pastor: We celebrate today the blessings God has given us. We remember the grace given through Baptism, and we gather at the Baptismal font for new life and new hope. Amen. Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we come before the Lord today to welcome a new member into the Kingdom of God. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Amen. Come, creating Father. Pastor: Jesus said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Pastor: Jesus also said, I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit. 3

Pastor: Jameson Ryan Erwin, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead and upon your heart, to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. Let us pray. Lord God, Heavenly Father, we present Jameson, a child of Your own creation, given to us as a blessing to Your church. We know each one of us is born sinful into a sinful world, darkened from Your light. Give to Jameson and to all of us the light of Your presence, now and forever. Amen. Confession of Faith Pastor: It is your task as parents and sponsors to confess before God your intention to see that Jameson is brought up in the Christian faith. As a part of your responsibilities you are to remember Jameson in your prayers, to teach him the 10 Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord s Prayer. As he grows in years you are to put in his hands the Holy Scriptures and provide for him further instruction in the Christian faith that in fellowship with the church he may lead a godly life until the day of Jesus Christ. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations? Parents & Sponsors: I do. Pastor: It is good and right that we should all confess with the church what God works in and through Baptism. So I ask do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways? I do renounce them. Pastor: Let us confess the new life of hope Jameson will receive. I believe in God, the t Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third t day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Baptism Pastor: It is written in Titus, chapter 3, But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 4

Pastor: Into this Christian faith we now baptize Jameson Ryan Erwin. Jameson Ryan Erwin, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and in the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Blessing Pastor: We offer two symbols of the new life found in Christ, that you, Jameson, a child of God, may remember the grace found today in baptism. Receive this white garment, to show that Christ has taken away all of your sin and clothed you in perfect righteousness. Receive also this burning light, to remind you to live always by Christ s light in a world darkened by sin. Let this light be a comfort and guide all your days. May the Lord, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you with His grace to life everlasting. May He keep you in your baptismal grace, that you may lead a life that will glorify Him. Peace be with you. Amen. Pastor: Let us pray. Father of all creation, bless these parents and all our parents. Give to them a heart of rejoicing in the gift You have given them. Grant that they may be enabled to carry out Your work, strengthened in their own faith, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Pastor: Through Baptism God has added Jameson to His own people to declare the wonderful deeds of our Savior, who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Let us speak these words of blessing and welcome: We welcome you into the Lord s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, to work with us in His kingdom. Pastor: And you, Jameson, the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and even forevermore. Amen! OLD TESTAMENT READING EZEKIEL 2:1-5 He said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet, and I will speak with you. And as he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. And he said to me, Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD. And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that a prophet has been among them. 5

EPISTLE READING 2 CORINTHIANS 12:1-10 10 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into paradise whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. Though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Please stand for the Reading of the Holy Gospel. THE HOLY GOSPEL MARK 6:1-13 13 [Jesus] went away from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works done by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household. And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching. And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff no bread, no bag, no money in their belts but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. And he said to them, Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there. And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them. So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them. Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the Lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children s message. CHILDREN HILDREN S MESSAGE 6

GATHERING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS God doesn t need our money, but in His grace He gives us the privilege to be stewards of everything He has entrusted to our care. We can do more together than separately. As one body in Christ, our congregation has agreed to offer our first fruits to support ministries and missions that enable us to communicate Christ s love to everyone, everywhere; and our love for Him. Your sacrificial gift enables this holy work. 7

CONGREG ONGREGATIONAL MUSICAL OFFERING Stay And Wait Who spoke the earth and sky to form? Who sets the sun and calls the dawn? Who breathed me out of dust to life? After each petition the prayer concludes: Pastor: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We pray together, Our Father F who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for ever and ever. Amen. HOLY COMMUNION REGARDING HOLY COMMUNION As Lutheran communicants, we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in this holy supper. Be mindful of the words of St. Paul: Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. (1 Corinthians 11:28) Are you truly sorry for your sins? Do you believe your sins are forgiven because Jesus died for them? Do you believe that Jesus gives you His own body and blood in the sacrament as a seal of that forgiveness? Do you have the sincere intent to do better in living the Christian life? Then come, and receive assurance and strength from Jesus. 8

NOTE: In the center of each communion tray are a few glasses with grape juice wine for those who are on alcohol restrictive medications or who, for personal reasons, wish to abstain from wine. Also we have gluten-free communion wafers available for those who need them. They are in the small plastic containers on the wafer trays (patens). The empty plastic containers may be placed in the bags with the used communion cups. WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. THE PEACE Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you.
