October 28, 2018 8:15am Service Large Print Bulletin Welcome to Elk River Lutheran Church! We are a forward-thinking congregation, striving to create community that brings joy and hope. Worshipping together since December 2009, we believe that all people are welcome in the Lord s house, to hear the Word, share the Sacraments, and become strengthened for the life of faith. We are a child friendly congregation and welcome kids with their wiggles and noises in worship. We are also aware that as a parent, time away from wiggles and noises can be a blessing too. You will find our staffed nursery (For children 5 and under) in the far corner of the fellowship hall. We encourage everyone to take a moment to sign the worship registration slip and place it in the offering plate. We hope and pray you have a wonderful worship experience here today and invite you to join us again.
The Gathering of God s People WELCOME GATHERING HYMN: (ELW #504) "A Mighty Fortress" v1, 2 & 3 1 A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; he breaks the cruel oppressor's rod and wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn to work us woe! With craft and dreadful might he arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal. 2 No strength of ours can match his might! We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, whom God himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is he! Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God's only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious. 4 God's Word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes, who fear it; for God himself fights by our side with weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, goods, honor, child, or spouse, though life be wrenched away, they cannot win the day. The kingdom's ours forever!
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Holy God, sometimes we close ourselves off and keep our joys and hardships to ourselves May we regularly share our highs and lows Sometimes we neglect your holy Word and let our Bibles collect dust May we regularly read the Bible Sometimes we give no thought to what the Bible might have to say to our everyday lives May we regularly talk about how the Bible relates to our highs and lows Sometimes we skip praying or pray only for ourselves May we regularly pray for one another s highs and lows Sometimes we rush through life and don t pause to bless others or receive blessings from God and others. May we regularly bless one another Sometimes we try to do faith alone, turning our backs on our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and turning our backs on you God. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and
ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day: Let us pray. Gracious God you call us to experience faith together. May we regularly share together, read together, talk together, pray for one another, and bless one another. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. FIRST READING: Genesis 32:24-31 24 Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." 27 So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." 28 Then the man said, "You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed." 29 Then Jacob asked him, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And there
he blessed him. 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." 31 The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Allelulia Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Gospel Reading: John 1:14-17 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'") 16 From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM PRESENTATION Dear friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism and for these young people, one with us in the body of Christ, who are making public affirmation of their baptism. I present names, who desire to make public affirmation of their baptism. Kassandra angrimson Mackenzie brooking Shanon dickman Ashlyn ditschler CONFIRMATION STUDENT FAITH STATEMENTS Kassandra Angrimson: Jesus loves me twenty-four seven. Even though sometimes i lose love for myself, he gets into my head and gives me a billion reasons why i should love myself. He loves me no matter what negative choices i ve made and what i ll make in the future. Mackenzie brooking: I have felt god through the difficult times and the happiest times. I know that he is always there and he will help me through it. I see him in the beauty of his earth and in the people i meet. Shanon Dickman: I remember when one of our cats died me and my mom sat on the couch together, crying with each other, letting each other know: i feel your pain. I love you. I'm here. This pure understanding empathy and love, that's god's, love we felt for each other just as unending as his.
Ashlyn Ditschler What it means to be called a member of the body of christ means go to church, pray, listen to his stories, and go to youth nights to talk about how god has been in your life. I loved how we were all so close and could just talk about anything. Let us pray. Merciful God, we thank you for these sisters in Christ, whom you have made your own by water and the Word in baptism. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in the community of faith. Uphold your servants in the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth. We ask this in the name of Christ. Amen. I ask you to profess your faith in christ jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy god? I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against god? I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from god? I renounce them. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in god, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, god's only son, our lord, who was conceived by the holy spirit,
born of the virgin mary, suffered under pontius pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Each person responds: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.
People of God, do you promise to support these sisters and brothers and pray for them in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Let us pray. Father in heaven, for Jesus sake, stir up in name the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm her/his faith, guide her/his life, empower her/him in her/his serving, give her/him patience in suffering, and bring her/him to everlasting life. Amen. Let us rejoice with these sisters and brothers in Christ. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. BIDDING PRAYER Each prayer petition ends with a time for silent prayer and reflection, and then the following call and response: Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
