Michael the The Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time November 4, 2018 Rev. Fr. Dale Branson, Pastor TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy it; you may even find yourselves fighting against God. Acts 5:38b-39b Parish Office Mailing and delivery address: 25394 N. Poseidon Rd. Weekend Mass Schedule Saturday: Adoration 9am (following 8:30am mass) Vigil 4pm Sunday: 8 am & 10:00 am Daily Mass Schedule Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday - 8:30am at the Parish Center. Parish Center 26035 N Apollo Dr. San Tan Valley, AZ 85132 Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core ac vi es of our democra c system: a presiden al elec on. Actually, the ins tu on of elec on can be traced to tradi ons in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monas c communi es) have almost always been elected by full vo ng members of their communi es. The life me appointment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in chapter at the death or resigna on of the abbot, and fortunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Holy Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of consecra on or inves ture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presiden al elec on, not the popular elec on on a November Tuesday, just as the monas c chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in chapter by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a me will do! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee do I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Today's readings try to answer the ques on, "What must I do to be successful?" The readings begin with just one commandment: Love the Lord with all your heart, all your soul, and with all your strength. The psalm extolls God's strength and protec on, giving us lots of reasons to love God. The Le er to the Hebrews once again contrasts the perfec on of Christ as priest with the weakness of the other priests. Mark reminds us of the first commandment and adds a second element to it. We must not only love God but we must love our neighbor as ourselves. Mark does not provide a lot of details, just the simple understanding that to love God with your whole self and your neighbor as yourself is worth more than any other sacrifice. SECRET OF SUCCESS The readings are fairly simple and straigh orward. Do just these two things-love God with your whole self and love your neighbor as yourself--and you will be saved. Deuteronomy and the Psalm emphasize the importance of loving God with our whole selves. Hebrews reminds us that Jesus loved us as he loved his Father and so he offered himself for our sins. Mark says that loving God completely must also be accompanied by loving our neighbor. Jesus loved his Father with his whole soul, his whole mind, his whole strength. The love between God and Jesus makes them one. Everything hinges on the completeness and the inclusiveness of that love. LOVE We all love rules to measure our ac ons and assure us that we have done enough. Today we are given two rules that offer us none of that. These rules require us to focus only on love: love of God and love of neighbor. There are not seven or ten. There are just two. You must love God but you must do it with your en re being. Everything you are must be focused on and reflect loving God. And then you must love your neighbor. The first is key to the second. Unless we understand how God loves both the lovable as well as the unlovable, we will never be able to love ourselves or any other creature or crea on as God loves them all. The Gospels remind us that Jesus sought the broken, the marginalized, the unwanted to teach us how God loves. If everything about you is about loving a God who created and redeemed you, then you love as God loves. If you love as God loves, you recognize the weakness in yourself and in the world yet you s ll love that broken self and broken world as its Creator does. That is the only measure of success that ma ers. Today's Readings: Dt 6:2-6; Ps 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51; Heb 7:23-28; Mk 12:28b-34 First Reading The L, the God of your fathers, will give you a land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 6:2-6). Psalm I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him (Hebrews 7:23-28). Gospel To love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:28b-34).
