SANKRANTI PONGAL The day on which sun begins to move northwards is known as Makara Sankranti. On this day, oblations are offered to the departed ancestors. The six months period (Uttarayana) during which sun travels northwards is considered very favourable to every one aspiring for higher goals of life. On this day, first harvest (Pongal) is offered to Sun God. On the previous day, called Bhogi, old things are burnt, houses are whitewashed and dirty things are discarded. While external impurities are cleaned, on the Sankranti Day, one should clean the mind as well as Sun, symbolizing knowledge and wisdom, on its northward course, shed its light and warmth in greater abundance and infuse more life and energy. Sun God who is impartial, regular and punctual never claims a reward and if one imbibes these qualities, is sure to shine like a Sun with luster. There is a family re-union in all homes. Brothers renew their contact with married sisters giving some presents. Farmer is greeted and is given grains, clothes and money. On the next day, cows are worshipped, young girls offer various special dishes on the bank of river or tank to enable birds and other creatures to be fed. These days are generally avoided for travel mainly to be with the family. 7
