Stations of the Cross Ascension of the Lord May 28, 2017 They have kept your word. John 17:6b... in the Mission Church. We are pleased to announce that we have recently enlisted the services of artist Daniel Hagenbuch to restore the Stations of the Cross in the Mission Church to their former beauty. Daniel was a student, protégé and friend of Andrzej Lojszczyk, who was the original artist. The work of Station 7, Jesus Fall a Second Time, has been completed and the station has been re-hung. Each station has an appropriate place for two memorial plagues. Many of these plagues were designated at a previous time. In order to offset the cost of this project, we are offering parishioners the opportunity to make a donation of $1000 for the 12 remaining memorial plagues. If you are interested, please contact the parish office by telephone (only). Due to the limited number of plagues available, this will be done on a first come-first served, payment received basis! Word for each plague will be approved by the parish office. The privilege of preserving the Mission has been entrusted to us. We thank you for your support! Cast off Darkness, Put on the Armor of Light A Young Adult Men s Retreat sponsored by the Diocese of San Diego. June 9-11, cost is $120 per person. For more details and to register, please visit YAMSD.org Welcome to Mission San Diego! Hi, my name is Deacon Bill Zondler, soon to be ordained a priest and assigned here to the Mission! I am so excited to start my journey as a priest with you. I was born and raised in San Diego, moving all over North County until my family settled in Encinitas when I started high school. I went to UCSB for three years before eventually transferring and graduating from Franciscan University of Steubenville in 2011. I ve been studying at Mt. Angel Seminary for the last five years and have finally graduated! I was overjoyed to hear I would be assigned to you for many reasons. One specific reason was that at first when I felt called to be a priest I was taking steps to become a Franciscan. Throughout my time in seminary for the Diocese of San Diego, I always felt close to St. Francis and St. Junipero Serra and the Franciscan charism. I am excited to start my journey as a priest here at this special and historical place where St. Junipero first brought the Gospel to San Diego! Please know of my prayers for you this summer as I study Spanish before joining you on September 1st! God bless. Deacon Bill Zondler Deacon Zondler will be ordained a priest of the diocese on June 9, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Therese of Carmel (4355 Del Mar Trails Road). All are invited. Parish Office The Parish Office will be closed on Memorial Day, May 29. Gift Shop will be open regular hours. There will be one Mass Memorial Day at 9 am. Memorial Day, first observed in May 1868 as Decoration Day, honors men and women who have died in the service of our country. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Join us at 9 a.m. in the Mission church on Memorial Day as we honor our fallen. Loose Change Collection June 2 and 3 All loose change placed in the collection basket NEXT WEEK will be sent to Fraternity House, a home for AIDS and Cancer patients. Thank you also for your donations of non-perishable foods for Holy Family food bank and large bags of beans and rice for Sister Margaret Kelly s Tijuana ministry, diapers for Birthline to help needy expectant families and paper products for Fraternity House. Thank you for your generosity to those in need. Attention Youth Ministry Families Youth Mass is on Sunday, June 4 at 5:30 p.m. If any youth would like to volunteer as a lector, participate in music ministry or help with hospitality, please contact the Youth Office. Congratulations to our Senior Core Team members: Brittney, Danielle, Delia, Kevin, Antoinette, Daniel, Angie, Nathan and Landon as you graduate from high school! We are so excited for you and the new adventures to come. Rest assured of our prayers for you. Ms. V.J. Brion at (619) 640-0481 You Can Make a Difference! Bottled water is handy when you re on the go, but why not buy one bottle and then refill it from the tap or your work s water cooler. Around 90% of water bottles end up decomposing in landfills rather than being recycled. Festival of the Bells Drawing and Pancake Breakfast, June 4, 2017 If you didn t receive your Festival of the Bells mailing there is still time to stop by the Parish Office and pick up some tickets for the drawings. A book of 35 tickets is $30 and you could win from $300 to $1500. And don t forget the Early Bird Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, June 4 from 7:30 11 am in the California Room. You could win the $100 drawing! All proceeds from the drawings will go towards the restoration and preservation of our beautiful and historic Mission San Diego de Alcalá.

THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM This seventh Sunday of Easter is somewhat like the proverbial calm before the storm. The Lord Jesus has ascended into heaven and Pentecost has not yet occurred. Rather than immediately taking up Jesus command to go out to all the nations, the disciples gather in the upper room with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers (Acts 1:14). There they all devote themselves to prayer. The Gospel recounts the great prayer for the disciples that Jesus offered to his Father in heaven. If the words of Jesus while he was on earth finally began to sink in for the disciples, then gathering to pray was certainly the right choice, for the second reading lets us all know that to follow Christ means to have a share in his sufferings.
