Saint Margaret PARISH Seeking a world transformed and unified in Christ Fourth Sunday of Lent ~ March 11, 2018 Saint Mary Magdalen Mission For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Jn 3:17 Salvation is often viewed too narrowly - experiencing salvation is more than escaping the permanence of death. Salvation, in the broadest sense - the salvation we are promised at our baptism - is much greater than just escaping the grave. The salvation promised in the Old Testament, preached by Jesus, and expanded upon by Paul is about experiencing life in fullness now as well as eternal life with God. Salvation is freedom from the damaging effects of sin and has very real effects in our daily life. When sin separates us from God and others, we feel isolated, anxious, depressed, and lonely. Because of this, life in fullness is only experienced in relationship to God and other people. We cannot achieve it or experience it on our own. We are who we are, because of our relationship to one another. I am a mother, sister, spouse, and daughter, because we are a family. I am a Christian because I belong to a community of believers. I am a follower of Christ and a child of God because of God s continuous creative outpouring of love that invites me into relationship. I am called to community because we are created in the image and likeness of a God who is defined by relationship Father, Son, and Spirit. We are the Body of Christ, and I can only experience life in fullness if my fellow members are well and whole. Reflection Question ~ What does salvation mean to me? How does the path that others are on affect my salvation, if at all? What does I am, because we are mean to me? Gospel Challenge ~ Help someone in need. Need an idea? Support the parish s Feed My Lamb s Lenten Outreach program. Look inside this bulletin for items needed. Symbols of Saint Mary Magdalen ~ Are You Wondering About the Skull? Cross: Mary clinging to a cross symbolizes how she was present at Jesus crucifixion. The cross being plain might signify how she was the first to see the risen Christ. Skull: There are a few possibilities for the skull... It might symbolize her presence at Jesus crucifixion at Golgotha which means Place of the Skull. The skull may very well represent Mary Magdalene having lived a quiet, prayerful life after the death of Jesus. Other saints who lived ascetic lives - are also often portrayed with a skull nearby. It could also represent the often honored belief that the skull of St. Mary Magdalene can be found within the crypt of the Basilica of St. Mary Magdalene in the town of St. Maximin, France. Container of Ointment: This vessel of ointment could represent a few things too...for many years Mary Magdalene was considered by many to be the same as Mary of Bethany (Martha s sister). While it is still possible, most Biblical historians now consider them to be two separate women. So, the jar of ointment could stand for the possibility that it was Mary Magdalene who anointed Jesus feet in John 12:3. The jar of ointment could also represent how Mary Magdalene was one of the Ointment-Bearing Women who went to the tomb of Jesus on the first Easter morning hoping to anoint his dead body. Long Curly Hair and Red Cloak: These probably represent an old belief that Mary Magdalene was a courtesan/prostitute. More respectable women of the era would have had their heads covered. The red cloak might represent her love for Jesus, but it could also signify her purported sinful past. Luke 8:1 lets us know that Mary Magdalene had been possessed by seven demons, but no verses in Scripture assert that she was a prostitute.

From the Pastor A little FYI. The chapel renovations are progressing with all new electrical and lighting that are finished. Now we are waiting for a new top where the Tabernacle will sit and a new top for the pulpit. Also right after Easter the new pews will be installed. So, I am thinking about the 15th of April, we should be able to use the chapel. Again, thank you for your patience. I think that you will enjoy this sacred space. Please review the bulletin insert about the services for Holy Week and Easter. This journey is what it is all about as a Christian. P.S. Only 42 numbers left in our 600 Club Drawing!
