St. Paul s Episcopal Church All are welcome, no exceptions! St. Paul s Mission Statement: We are called to gather around the sacred story and table of Christ where all are invited to be fed and everyone s story matters. St. Paul s Vision Statement: We pray that our hearts may be opened to seek the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to be the church and the Christians that God is calling us to be. Seventh Sunday after Pentecost Proper 9 Rite I July 3, 2016 10:30 A.M.

Welcome to worship this morning! The Holy Eucharist Rite I The Liturgy of the Word Processional Hymn # 657 Love divine, all loves excelling! Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. Glory to God: Gloria in excelsis S 280 2

The Collect of the Day Proper 9 The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. O God, who hast taught us to keep all thy commandments by loving thee and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of thy Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to thee with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson 2 Kings 5:1-14 Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favor with his master, because by him the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman's wife. She said to her mistress, "If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy." So Naaman went in and told his lord just what the girl from the land of Israel had said. And the king of Aram said, "Go then, and I will send along a letter to the king of Israel." He went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of garments. He brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, "When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you my servant Naaman, that you may cure him of his leprosy." When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, "Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me." But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, "Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel." 4

So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha's house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean." But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, "I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?" He turned and went away in a rage. But his servants approached and said to him, "Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, 'Wash, and be clean'?" So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean. Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 30 30:1 I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up* and have not let my enemies triumph over me. 30:2 O LORD my God, I cried out to you,* and you restored me to help. 30:3 You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead;* you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 30:4 Sing to the LORD, you servants of his;* give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. 30:5 For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye,* his favor is for a lifetime. 5

30:6 Weeping may spend the night,* but joy comes in the morning. 30:7 While I felt secure, I said, "I shall never be disturbed.* You, LORD, you re your favor, made me as strong as the mountains. 30:8 Then you hid your face,* and I was filled with fear. 30:9 I cried to you, O LORD;* I pleaded with the LORD, saying, 30:10 "What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit?* Will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? 30:11 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy on me;* O LORD, be my helper!" 30:12 You have turned my wailing into dancing;* you have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. 30:13 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing;* O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever. The Second Lesson Galatians 6:1-16 My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor's work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads. Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher. Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up. 6

So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised--only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule--peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. Lector The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hymn # 334 Praise the Lord, rise up rejoicing The Gospel Luke 10:1-11, 16-20 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, Lord Christ. After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!' And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. 7

Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.' "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!" He said to them, "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Reverend Dru Green Silence for meditation We stand to affirm our faith by reciting the Nicene Creed. 8

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the for the Sixth Sunday of Pentecost Intercessor Let us pray for the needs of the world, saying: Gracious God, hear our prayer. God, our Mother and Father, we give you thanks that you have brought us to this new day. The beauty and power of sunshine, wind, fog, and rain are marvels to our senses, and in them we see how much we depend on your gifts. Even in the darkest storms, help us to see in nature s might the guiding hand in which you hold your children. Silence Gracious God, 9

Intercessor Intercessor Intercessor Hear our prayer. Pour out on us a spirit of grace and petition, as on Jerusalem of old, and hear us in our need: that the law of faith which guides us be our standard in judging the laws of land and church and culture, and that our lives be conformed to the faithful love of Christ. Strengthen our church s leaders, especially Michael, our Presiding Bishop, Jeff our Diocesan Bishop, and our priest, Stacy. *For the congregations of the Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea ; our companion dioceses of Southeast Mexico and Renk in the South Sudan; and for congregations in the Rockford Deanery: St. Bride in Oregon; Christ Church in Ottawa; Emmanuel in Rockford; St. Anskar in Rockford. Silence Gracious God, Hear our prayer. That we who call Christ Messiah be empowered to carry the cross of insult as we work for freedom; that all nations may be steered by leaders who value each individual in their care; that all people may work for the good of everyone. We pray for Barak, our president, and Bruce, our governor. Silence Gracious God, Hear our prayer. That the paths we walk be wide enough for all people: for the homeless, for aliens in flight, for prisoners, for persons of all colors, for all who are ostracized, for those dying of incurable disease, for all who you call your own. Silence Gracious God, Hear our prayer. 10

Intercessor Intercessor That children may grow up strong and kind; that we give thanks to you for new life; that families be strengthened for the sake of each member. Silence Gracious God, Hear our prayer. That all people weakened through illness of mind or body feel your protective hand and our tangible care; that healing of body and soul come to those we pray for. Give to your people all that you see is needed. We pray especially for Laura, Paula Hofer, Jan Kuntz, Jim, Margaret Johnson, Betsey and Family, Kurt, Gretta May, Jan, Kara, Jim and Ryan, and Kurt, Gail, Cindy, Kathleen, Brian, Amy and Andrew, Lisa Allison, Bob and Joan Brown, Pastor Fred deoliveira, Barbara and Bill, Aunt Joanna, Eric, Rick, Jacqueline, Dorothy, Bill, Finn, Bob Z., Sara Lou Dudgeon, Lissa, Steve, Zoe Hudson, Sebastian, Steve and Beth, and Sue Ouellette. Gracious God, Silence Intercessor Hear our prayer. We remember those celebrating birthdays this week, especially Hazel Retherford, Pat McMahon, and Jocelyn Prall; and those celebrating anniversaries this week. Silence Gracious God, Hear our prayer. 11

Intercessor Intercessor Intercessor Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant, we beseech thee, that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain these liberties in righteousness and peace. Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for our freedom. With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over their families. Silence Gracious God, Hear our prayer. We remember before you those who have died. Silence Gracious God, Hear our prayer. All-knowing, all-loving God, we cannot always voice our hidden cares. Hear our silent prayers, even those without words. (The people may add their prayers either silently or out loud.) Silence Gracious God Intercessor Hear our prayer. We pray in the name of your perfect witness in the world, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen. *Every week we will pray for a different international church in the Anglican Communion as part of the Anglican Cycle of Prayer. We also will pray weekly for churches and ministries in the Diocese of Chicago and our Companion Dioceses as part of the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer. 12

The Confession Page 331 Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. In unison Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear the Word of God to all who truly turn to him. Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy sprit. Then we greet one another saying, Peace be with you. ANNOUNCEMENTS 13

The Holy Communion The Offertory Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:2) Offertory Hymn # 531 O Spirit of the Living God Doxology Hymn # 380 v. 3 Sursum Corda The Holy Communion The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer II The Lord be with you. And with thy sprit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. 14

It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Creator of the light and source of life, who hast made us in thine image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Sanctus, S 114 _ Holy, holy, holy All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until coming again. 15

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me." Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. 16

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, In Unison Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Silence is observed after the bread is broken Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. 17

Agnus Dei (Fraction Anthem: O Lamb of God) S 158 : The Gifts of God for the of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 18

The Episcopal Church invites all Christians to receive communion. The host is placed in your open hands; please assist in guiding the chalice to your lips, or dip the host in the wine. We have gluten free hosts available, ask the priest at the rail. It is acceptable to receive only the bread or the wine. If you would rather not receive communion, you are invited to come to the rail for a blessing. Simply cross your arms over your chest and the priest will say a prayer for you. Communion Hymn # 321 My God, thy table now is spread When all have received Communion, the leads the following prayer: Let us pray. In Unison Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou has prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. The Blessing The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Household Prayer: Morning Each morning when we wake up we are reminded of your presence. The light of the sun, the sounds of the birds, your creation serves as witness of your love and your imagination. Let us take it all in and transform our awe into praises that those around us can hear each day and know that you are God. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening We have heard your voice, O God. Through smiles, through words, through music, through tears, we have heard your voice! Give us the comfort of your presence as we begin to live out the end of our day, and allow us to have rest and the same peace that your disciples declared when they entered somebody s home and said, Peace to this house. Amen. 26
