Overview of the Bible New Testament Part 4 By David Dann

Overview of the Bible The Bible tells the story of how God created man and of God s purpose for man. The Bible answers the most important questions of life. The Bible tells us about the problem of sin.

The Bible Tells Us About Sin What is Sin? Violation of God s Law. What are the consequences of sin? Sin separates man from God. M A N SIN G O D This is spiritual death! (Ephesians 2:1)

The Bible Tells Us About God s Plan God s plan was to send Jesus, the Son of God, to take away sin so that man could have a relationship with God again. God would use Abraham to carry out his plan to save mankind from sin and made three promises to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3). The rest of the Old Testament deals with the fulfillment of these three promises. The third promise refers to the fact that Jesus would be Abraham s descendant.

The Three Promises God fulfilled his first promise to Abraham by making his descendants (Israel) into a great nation of people. God fulfilled his second promise to Abraham by giving Abraham s descendants (Israel) possession of the land. God fulfilled the third promise when Jesus came to take away man s sins.

God Had A Plan! Jesus would take away man s sin. M A N SIN G O D This is spiritual death! (Ephesians 2:1)

God Had A Plan! Jesus would take away man s sin. M A N Together with G O D This is spiritual life! (Ephesians 2:1)

The Birth Of Jesus Christ The Old Testament concluded by looking forward to the coming of Christ. The New Testament begins by announcing the birth of Christ. He comes from the correct family line. But, he is also the Son of God. Jesus existed from eternity as one who is God before he came to earth as man!

The Teaching Of Jesus He came to fulfill the Old Testament. He challenged the Jewish religious leaders. He presented the highest moral standard the world has ever seen.

Jesus Is Betrayed & Arrested Judas leads a mob to arrest Jesus. Jesus is arrested. His disciples run away (Matthew 26:56). The Jewish leaders decide that Jesus deserves to die for claiming to be the Son of God (Matthew 26:65-66). The Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate, gives in to their plan to put Jesus to death.

Jesus Is Executed The Roman soldiers scourge Jesus (Matthew 27:26). They ridicule and mock him. They crucify him (Matthew 27:35). The Jewish leaders continue to mock him while he is dying. Finally, Jesus dies on the cross.

Jesus Is Resurrected Jesus said he would rise from the dead on the third day following his death (Matthew 20:18-19). The third day after Jesus died and was buried, his tomb was empty! Jesus was raised from the dead on the first day of the week (Sunday). He appeared to his disciples during 40 days following his resurrection (Acts 1:3).

Jesus Gives His Apostles A Mission The apostles will be sent to preach the message of Christ everywhere. And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:15-16).

Jesus Ascends To Heaven Forty days after his resurrection from the dead, Jesus returned to the Father in heaven. Jesus completed his mission!!!!!

The Coming Of The Holy Spirit Jesus told his apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). About 10 days after Jesus ascended into heaven, the power of the Holy Spirit is poured out on the apostles.

The Apostles Preach The Gospel Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus died for the sins of mankind. Jesus was raised from the dead. Jesus is now on the throne of God in heaven. Jesus offers mankind salvation from sin.

Conditions For Forgiveness Of Sin The apostles make the Lord s terms for forgiveness known. Man must believe the gospel. Man must repent of his sins. Man must be baptized (immersed in water). When a person meets these terms, God will forgive all of his past sins (Acts 2:38). These are the same conditions for forgiveness that every sinner must meet!

The Beginning Of The Church The Lord adds the saved to his church. When the people met the Lord s conditions for forgiveness they were saved. When they were saved, the Lord put them in his church. Christ adds people to his spiritual body of saved people (the church) when they meet his terms for forgiveness of sins.

The Beginning Of The Church The Lord adds the saved to his church. When man: 1. Believes 2. Repents 3. & Is Baptized Church The church is the Lord s body of saved people!

Conversions In Acts The book of Acts tells of the first people converted to Christ. Conversion turning completely to God. The apostles (and others) continue preaching the message of salvation through Christ. Many people believe and obey the gospel. By looking at their examples we can learn how to be saved today.

Conversion Of The Samaritans A preacher named Philip preaches to the people of the city of Samaria. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did (Acts 8:5-6).

Conversion Of The Samaritans A preacher named Philip preaches to the people of the city of Samaria. Many of the Samaritans respond by believing and obeying the gospel. But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized (Acts 8:12).

Conversion Of Simon Simon was a sorcerer (false religious leader who practiced magic). But there was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, claiming that he was someone great, to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God (Acts 8:9-10).

Conversion Of Simon Simon was a sorcerer (false religious leader who practiced magic). Simon hears Philip preach the gospel and is baptized. Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done (Acts 8:13).

Simon s Sin After he is baptized, Simon sins by trying to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit. And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:18-19).

Simon s Sin After he is baptized, Simon sins by trying to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit. Peter tells Simon that he is lost because of this sin. But Peter said to him, Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God (Acts 8:20-21).

Simon s Sin After he is baptized, Simon sins by trying to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit. Peter tells Simon that he is lost because of this sin. What does Simon need to do to be forgiven by God? Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you (Acts 8:22).

Simon s Sin After he is baptized, Simon sins by trying to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit. Peter tells Simon that he is lost because of this sin. What does Simon need to do to be forgiven by God? One who sins after he has become a Christian needs to repent and ask God for forgiveness!

Conversion Of The Ethiopian God sends Philip to preach to an Ethiopian man who is reading the Scriptures. Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and overtake this chariot. So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, Do you understand what you are reading? (Acts 8:29-30).

Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem (Acts 9:1-2).

Conversion Of Saul Saul was a Jew who was trying to destroy the church. Jesus appears to Saul and speaks to him. So he, trembling and astonished, said, Lord, what do You want me to do? Then the Lord said to him, Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do (Acts 9:6).

Conversion Of Saul Saul was a Jew who was trying to destroy the church. Jesus appears to Saul and speaks to him. Saul now believes in Jesus and has repented, but there is still something he must do. God sends a preacher named Ananias to preach to Saul (Acts 9:10-16).

Conversion Of Cornelius Cornelius was a Gentile (non-jew) who was a good man. But Cornelius was still lost in sin! God sends Peter to preach to Cornelius and his family (Acts 10:19-23). Peter preaches to Cornelius family about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (Acts 10:38-41).

Conversion Of Cornelius The power of the Holy Spirit falls on Cornelius and his family while Peter is preaching. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God (Acts 10:44-46).

Conversion Of Cornelius The power of the Holy Spirit falls on Cornelius and his family while Peter is preaching. Were they saved at this point? No, this power was a sign to the Jewish believers to show them that these Gentiles could also be saved through Christ.

Conversion Of Cornelius Cornelius and his family still needed to be baptized. Then Peter answered, Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord (Acts 10:46-48).
