Stand up and be counted! Back in 1976, my first priestly assignment was to the great old parish of St. Mary s in Newport. We were surrounded by mansions, taverns and tourists. They were wonderful years in many ways. In the summer, when most parishes were quiet and the priests could have a little extra time off, we were busier than ever. Buses filled with tour groups would descend on the church to see where President Kennedy and his young bride had taken their vows. It was impossible to get out of town with the summer traffic, and so the pastor bought me a moped so that I could get around town and take up the parish census. In those days the census was a unique experience for a newly ordained priest (there is nothing to compare to it today!). I would hit the streets around nine in the morning and by the end of the afternoon I might have covered two or three streets. In those days it was still possible to find people at home during the day and a visit from the priest was a special event for many of them. (However, I do remember one person who told me he had joined another church and that if I ever knocked on his door again he would call the cops.) I can t even begin to recount how many new parishioners I picked up just by knocking on doors. Many children who had never been to religious instructions were registered for the new school year. I especially enjoyed spending time with the elderly folks who regaled me with wonderful stories of what Newport was like in the good old days when the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers came to play. It would be nice to be able to take up a parish census that way today, but unfortunately it is no longer possible to find people at home during the day and the priests are already too busy with the realities of parish life in this new century. We simply would never be able to find the time to do it. Therefore in the office we are beginning the task of updating our parish census. Today we do it on the computer, but we still need your help. If you are not presently registered in the parish, or think you are but you don t receive any mail from the parish, please call our office (295-0387). If you have children who once lived with you and now are back with you, but we don t know it, please ask them to register too. If you know of a new family in your neighborhood who is a Catholic, ask them to call us as well. Because of the growing expense of mailing, we will be taking families off our budget mailing list who have not used their budget envelopes for more than a year, so if your envelopes are sitting around collecting dust use them or lose them or better yet, call us and we will help you set up an ACH account with your bank. We also have many people who registered here but live outside the boundaries of the parish. We are going to have to remove them from our list if they are no longer attending Mass here or do not support the parish in any way. I encourage them to register in their own geography parish. Thanks for your help! Fr. Jack Emmanuel House Homeless Shelter We are always in need of new socks, bath towels, and backpacks, twin-sized bedding, etc. Drop off items at the Parish Center. Contact the office at ParishCenter@SBCWickford.org or 295-0387 for more information. 2
