Salvation Message God helped Moses, Aaron, and Hur work together Aaron and Hur jumped in to help so that Joshua and his warriors could win God gives us opportunities to cooperate like they did, to do what He s called us to do BL: Work together to help someone succeed. CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide SETTING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Hey, everyone! I ve got a pretty amazing story of cooperation to tell you today. (Hold up Bible.) It comes from the Bible, in the book of Exodus. If you ve been here the past couple of weeks, we talked about a time when the God s people, the Israelites, were whining and complaining in the desert. God had led them out of slavery in Egypt and through the Red Sea, and He had promised them a beautiful land that would be their new home. But they hadn t reached that land yet, and they weren t very patient on the journey. They were hungry. They were thirsty. They wondered, Are we there yet? Sure enough, God gave them everything they needed along the way. Sure they were hungry, but God provided flakes of manna in the mornings, which tasted like honey bread. And He provided quail in the evenings, which I ll just guess tasted like chicken. And when they were thirsty, God even gave them water from a rock! The people had been through a lot, but their troubles in the wilderness weren't over. AMALEKITE ATTACK STORYTELLER: In fact, I think I see Moses right now. Host enters, wearing a bathrobe and fake gray beard, carrying a large backpack and a broom. He sets the backpack and broom down next to the camping chair and sits down. He opens the backpack and pulls out the Slim Jim and water bottle. He starts eating the Slim Jim. (To Host) Moses, have a seat and rest a minute. You and the Israelites have been through a lot. HOST: You can say that again. STORYTELLER: (Clear your throat.) You and the Israelites have been through a lot. HOST: Yes. Yes, we have. It s all good, though. God just gave us some water from a rock. Really helps to wash down the quail. Host takes a bite of the Slim Jim and then drinks some water. STORYTELLER: I hate to say this, Moses, but the Amalekites are attacking. Worship Leader (or other adult) enters from the side of the room as an Amalekite. He s wearing a horned helmet and waving a toy sword. (This should be comical, not scary.) WORSHIP LEADER as AMALEKITE: (Grunting) Me... Amalekite. Me... attack! The Amalekite ducks back out of view. STORYTELLER: (To Host) That s not good, Moses. (To audience) Luckily, Moses knew a brave young warrior named Joshua. Small Group Leader (or other adult) enters from the other side of the room as Joshua. He s wearing a knight helmet and holding up a toy sword. SMALL GROUP LEADER as JOSHUA: Did someone call for a warrior? STORYTELLER: Moses gave Joshua some instructions. HOST: (Calling over to Joshua, with hands around mouth) Joshua! Host opens the Bible to Exodus 17:9 (NIrV) and reads pointing and holding up the broom for emphasis. 2018 The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. www.thinkorange.com Adapted by Ginghamsburg Church 2018 7

Choose some of our men. Then go out and fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I ll stand there holding the walking stick God gave me. Joshua ducks back out of view. HANDS UP, HANDS DOWN STORYTELLER: The next day, Joshua and the other Israelite fighters went to battle against the Amalekites. Joshua and the Amalekite appear. This time, they re both on the side where the Amalekite appeared originally. They stand a few feet apart and swing their arms around ridiculously (not actually hitting each other). SMALL GROUP LEADER as JOSHUA: Take that... and that... and this! WORSHIP LEADER as AMALEKITE: Ughhhhhh! STORYTELLER: While they were doing that, Moses went up on the hill with his staff. Host stands up and pretends to climb a mountain. His brother Aaron and his friend Hur went with him. (To audience) Who wants to be Aaron and Hur? Choose two kids and bring them on stage next to Host. Put the Aaron and Hur name signs on them. When they got to the top of the hill, something very interesting happened. Moses raised his stick with both hands, as a sign that God was with the Israelites. Host holds up the broom with both hands. When Moses held up his walking stick, the Israelites started to win. SMALL GROUP LEADER as JOSHUA: Ha-HA! Joshua stands up tall and dabs. The Amalekite cowers down and puts his hands out to defend himself. STORYTELLER: But when Moses got tired and his hands started lowering, the Amalekites began to win. Host lowers the broom, clearly struggling. WORSHIP LEADER as AMALEKITE: Yarrrrrr! The Amalekite stands up tall and dabs. Joshua cowers down and puts his hands out to defend himself. AARON & HUR LEND A HAND STORYTELLER: Aaron and Hur saw their chance to help. They saw how they could help Joshua win! When Moses arms got tired, they found a stone and put it under him so he could sit on it. Get the beanbag from backstage and hand it to Aaron and Hur. Cue them to put it underneath Host. Host sits down, still holding up the broom with both hands. HOST: Aaahhhhh... much better. STORYTELLER: And that s not all! Aaron and Hur decided to hold up Moses arms. Aaron was on one side, and Hur was on the other. Cue Aaron and Hur to hold up Host s arms. 2018 The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. www.thinkorange.com Adapted by Ginghamsburg Church 2018 8

Now even when Moses got tired, he could hold his staff up high so the Israelites would win! And that s exactly what happened. Aaron and Hur held up Moses hands all the way until sunset, and Joshua and the Israelites won the battle. Joshua and the Amalekite keep flailing their arms around (still a few feet apart from each other). Eventually the Amalekite stops and holds up a white flag. Let s give all of our actors a big hand! Host, Joshua, and the Amalekite exit. Dismiss the two kids to their seats. WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: The Israelites were victorious that day because they knew God was with them when they saw Moses holding the staff in the air. Today we don't need to look for someone holding a staff, we can know Jesus is with us because His Spirit loves inside us. Here in the izone we call this the ABC s of salvation. To be saved God wants us to A- admit that we do bad things and these bad things keep us from God. Then there is the B. We need to believe that Jesus died for you and is God s son. Because Jesus came to earth and died on the cross he takes on the punishment for all of the bad things that we admit to doing. The final step is C, Confess. You pray to God and confess or tell God you are sorry for the sin or bad things in your life, ask Jesus to forgive you and then promise to do your best to make Jesus the most important thing in your life. If you have never done this before and you want to know more about asking Jesus in your life please talk to one of your small group leaders. God helped Moses, Aaron, and Hur work together in a pretty unusual way. Aaron and Hur saw that their army was only winning when Moses staff was in the air, and they saw that Moses couldn t hold it up by himself. They jumped in to help so that Joshua and his warriors could win on the battlefield. God gives us opportunities to cooperate just like they did. He lets us work together to do what He's called us to do. We need to be on the lookout... CG: Bottom Line Slide... so we can [Bottom Line] work together to help someone succeed. You can cooperate with others to help someone else. You don t have to get all the attention. You don t have to get the credit. Cooperating doesn t have to be just about what YOU need. You can help your friend study, make a card with your classmates for a friend who s sick, or encourage your teammates to give their best at practice. Think of ways you can [Basic Truth] treat others the way you want to be treated and then work with others to make it happen. I know all of you have some great ideas about how you can cooperate to help others, and that s what you get to talk about back in Small Group! At the end the Storyteller should pray for the group and dismiss kids to Small Group 7. Small Group (20-30 Minutes) SFX: Play high-energy music as the kids exit.
