Our cemetery is located on New Era Road right off 99E. In case of rain, Mass will be celebrated in the church. PARISH OFFICE The Parish Office will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th. BUY A CHAIR CAMPAIGN St Patrick's Women's Group has started "Buy a Chair" campaign. With the arrival of 20 new tables for the auditorium, there is a need to replace the very old chairs with stronger more stable white ones. We need 224 chairs. You have the opportunity to make this happen. Each chair costs $35. The total cost was averaged which includes carts to stack chairs. Someone will be available after each mass to take your check or cash and you can put your name on a square, representing a chair, which will be glued on the poster chart. Make the check payable to St Patrick Church and put "chair" on description line. If you provide cash, please put your name and address on an envelop available so you receive credit for your donation. If you have questions, you may contact: Karen Hunt, 503-702-3732, Verlene Patton, 503-481- 3619 or Ellen Hannan, 503-819-8331. Thank you for helping update our facility. We have all heard of the shamrock, which, according to legend, was used by St. Patrick to represent the Holy Trinity to the native Irish in the early fifth century. Three leaves on one sprig, representing three persons in one God. That story has been repeated countless times, and the image of the shamrock has become forever linked with the Trinity, and with the Irish. But, of course, God is more than a sprig, and the relationship between the persons of the Trinity is more complex and subtle than three leaves. Earlier church fathers used the image of the sun to speak of the Trinity, with the sun itself representing the Father, the light representing the Son, and the heat representing the Spirit. This image does more than the shamrock to convey the subtlety at work in such a sophisticated concept of three persons, one God. But still, the metaphor of the sun with its light and heat is still just that, a metaphor. Though trinitas is a Latin word and there fore not found in the New Testament, which was written in Greek, there are many triadic tests that speak of Father/God, Son, Spirit. Passages like the one for today would be considered triadic, and they would give rise to full-blown trinitarian theology in later centuries. The gospel scene is after Easter, but in Galilee. According to Matthew, this is the first and only appearance of the risen Jesus to his disciples. Still, the disciples doubt. They receive the command that has been referred to as the Great Commandment : God, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,/baptizing them in the name of the Father,/ and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of Matthew, which restricted the use of the term disciple to the Twelve during Jesus ministry, now shows that following the resurrection, there will be disciples in all nations. Matthew s baptismal formula for making a disciple is the same as what Christians use today. Based on this Great Commandment, Christianity has become a worldwide religion. From a mountaintop in Galilee, those initial disciples made other disciples by baptism, who made still more disciples by baptism, and so on, until our very day. Discipleship founded on baptism into the life of the Trinity is much more powerful than a shamrock, or even the sun. Living Liturgy year B

NO TUESDAY EVENING MASS, MAY 29TH. We will have a Liturgy of the Word. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 3484 AWARDS FOR LAST MONTH Family of the Month - Frank and Catherine Battilega and their four children are the family of the month. They live on a farm nearby where Frank has been farming for over 30 years. We thank Frank recently for cooking a great spaghetti dinner that followed the Donna Corri Gibson concert last month. The KofC council greatly appreciates his work in the kitchen. He also has supported our parish liturgies by reading some of the Easter readings for the last 10 years. Also they have shared with financial support, like for candles for annual church use, towards the crucifix hanging in our church and Christmas garlands during the season. Thanks again for their family and support of our parish. Lady of the Month - Margie Phillips, who is gifted in music, is our Lady of the Month. For about seven years at St. Pats she has led liturgical music with others at the 11am Mass and part time at the 5:30 Vigil Mass. She has been in music ministry most of her life and has a master s degree in choral conducting from PSU. Also she has taught choral music in an Oregon City school and has taught music in her Canby music school. She and her husband have two musically talented daughters and we have been blessed that they have helped with liturgical music too. Thanks again to Margie for sharing her music talents at our Masses. Knight of the Month Duane Kloser has devoted time, talent and treasure to our parish family and we appreciate it. As past Grand Knight he has led our council to get some awards and expand some of our activities too. Most recently he spearheaded the Lent concert/retreat featuring Donna Cori Gibson last month. Donna mentioned that Duane was a good organizer and promoter as she sees a lot of different levels of organization in her national travels. Also this helped her sell most of her CDs too. Duane and his wife Chris have three grown children and travel when possible. We also send our prayers for his brother Mark who recently had a near fatal fall and is slowly recovering. Thank you Duane for your hard work. WIDOW AND WIDOWERS DINNER SCHEDULED Save the date: June 10th beginning at 4:00p.m. for the Widow and Widowers dinner put on by the Knights of Columbus. LIVING THE PASCHAL MYSTERY When questioned about the Trinity, many catechists or Others resort to, It s a mystery. We can t understand it. While that may be true, it doesn t mean we don t think about it. A mystery of faith is in some ways similar to the mystery of the universe. We plumb its depths. We examine it from various angles. We ask questions. We discuss. We debate. And we find that we have not exhausted the topic; rather, it has exhausted us. And we return to it again later, learning more with each engagement. Dismissing any consideration of the Trinity solely because it is a mystery does us a disservice as rational yet faith-filled Christians. Many theologians have sought to express various aspects of this mystery through the centuries, and many more will continue to do so into the future. Part of our living the mystery is to know that we will never fully comprehend or understand all of what it means for God to be a Trinity. In the same manner, we will never fully comprehend or understand the entirety of the universe. But we can approach each mystery with humility and a sense of wonder and respect. Jesus is the incarnate God. He called God Father, and promised to send the Spirit who would remind his disciples about Jesus. Each of us has been baptized into the life of the Trinity and will continue to let that meaning unfold each day of our ongoing lives.
