Service of the Word September 2, 2018 Worship & Communion Welcome! It is a pleasure to have you with us this morning. This morning we will use the black New Century Hymnal (NCH) and the green Worship & Song hymnal (W&S). *Indicates when people are invited to stand. We Gather Prelude "I Love Thee, My Lord", from Christian Harmony, Jonas Dawson 1866, Douglas E. Wagner (b. 1952) Welcome Please sign the red Friendship Book in your pew. Call of the Engelbrecht Memorial Bell *Call to Worship (based on Psalm 45) L: My heart overflows with a goodly theme; I address my verses to the Sovereign One; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe. P: Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. Your royal scepter is a scepter of equity; L: You love righteousness and hate wickedness. P: Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions; L: Come, let us worship the LORD! *Opening Hymn Table of Plenty W&S #3173 *Confession and Pardon (unison) Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law,

we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *Pardon and Assurance *Passing of the Peace We Listen Old Testament Reading Song of Solomon 2:18-23 Carol Garrison Special Music "They'll Know We Are Christians By Our Love", Jonas Dawson words and music by Peter Scholtes, arr. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise....and so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy God of love and majesty, the universe speaks of your glory, O God Most High. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God! Hosanna in the highest!...and so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again....through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. *The Lord s Prayer (in unison) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
