Holy Spirit Parish Gospel Meditation "Son of David, have pity on me!" Has the cry of Bartimaeus ever escaped your lips? Today's Gospel tells the story of a blind man with a difficult lot in life. He made a living by begging coins off passing travelers. When word reaches him that Jesus will be passing by, this is when he begins his shouts for mercy. Jesus hears Bartimaeus' cry and beckons him forward. "What do you want me to do for you?" Last week, Jesus asked a similar question to James and John. Their response was a clutch for fame. Bartimaeus' response is much humbler. "Lord, I want to see." How strange this interaction must have seemed to the onlookers. The man is blind! Of course he wants to see! But Jesus is always teaching us. By asking us what we want, Jesus reveals the dispositions of our hearts. God already knows them, but do we? By asking James and John to name their ambition, their selfishness is exposed to them and to the other disciples. By asking Bartimaeus to name his longing, his faith is exposed to the entire crowd. Jesus invites participation in our own redemption. He doesn't save us without us! Take some time in silent prayer today. Place yourself in this story of Bartimaeus. Imagine yourself there on the dusty, crowded roadside. Jesus is calling you! When you stand before him, his focus is on you and you alone. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asks. Search your heart. How would you respond? What part of your heart is Jesus asking you to expose? He has come to heal and to restore. May we, too, be sent! "Go... your faith has saved you." First Saturday Devotions to Our Lady of Fatima Saturday, November 3, 2018-8:30 AM St. Mary Church, Wells, ME Fr. Vin Mellone, Celebrant Our Lady s help is needed: now, more than ever! Beginning this Sunday, October 28 The Holy Spirit Parish Pastoral Council is teaming up with the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation and Parish Social Life to bring six exciting faith community and education events to the parish, entitled Journey in Faith adult formation with separate sessions for children. These events will be geared toward adult faith formation, but will involve parishioners of every age. These events are for single or married parishioners, and for parishioners with or without children. We ll gather together for some refreshment; then, just as in our biological family gatherings, the kids will go off together while the adults turn to more mature topics. We are called to form our faith as well as our community. Our mission as Catholics is to grow closer to Jesus, and to share His story with others. These Journey in Faith sessions will enable us to learn more while evangelizing one another as a faith family. An informational brochure is available in the narthex of each of our church sites. It contains the schedule for the six events, information about the events, and scheduled speakers for the adult sessions. In order to ensure enough supplies and adult supervision, we need to know if adults will be bringing their children or grandchildren to the child-component part of the program by the Wednesday prior to the event. Our parish s first Journey in Faith event will take place on Sunday, October 28, from 3-5 PM. The theme for the event is the Communion of Saints, and will feature our head of pastoral council, Mary Colombo, Ed.D, as the adult presenter. Children will enjoy their own separate age-appropriate activities related to the Communion of Saints. The members of the Holy Spirit Parish Pastoral Council, Office of Lifelong Faith Formation, and Parish Social Life, hope that you will join them for this parishwide event! Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Friday, November 2 ~ St. Mary Chapel after the 8 AM Mass until Benediction at 12 Noon. ~ St. Martha Church after the 9 AM Mass until 4 PM. Please sign up in the narthexes for specific prayer times. 2
