Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2018

Sabbatical to Begin October 1 st! I am pleased to share some news with you. Beginning October 1 st, I will be starting a period of sabbatical that has been granted to me by Bishop Tobin. Every ten years, a pastor can apply for a three-month period of study away from his regular assignment. Several years ago, I had plans to do this but Fr. Murphy was transferred and not replaced. I have just begun my 25 th Jubilee year of priestly ministry and in my 12 th year as your Pastor! Hard to believe how time flies! When a priest goes on sabbatical, it is his responsibility to organize a program and make sure his parish has proper coverage. I will start with a pilgrimage and travel to some sites which I have never visited. I will make my way by mid October to Jerusalem, where the Salesian Fathers of Don Bosco will graciously house me. My connection with them has been that they are the religious order which staffs the parish we have adopted in Aleppo, Syria. I will be living with approximately 35 seminarians and 10 priests and auditing some of the classes which they provide. These men serve and will serve throughout the Middle East. The Rotsbonne Monastery is located just near to the tomb where Jesus rose from the dead! There will be ample opportunity to sharpen the Italian and French languages. The vast majority of priests who opt to take a sabbatical go to Rome, as the other two pastors are going there this year. Having studied there, I felt it important to step outside my comfort zone. I am very excited about this opportunity, which will be a first for me. Fr. Kiran, Msgr. Halloran, Fr. Henry and the good Dominican Fathers of Providence College have all pledged to make sure all our liturgies and needs are met. Of course, Fr. Kiran will be available for pastoral care as he is already. I pledge to pray for you daily and ask for your prayers. I hope that this time away from the parish will serve to rejuvenate my heart and mind to come back with new ideas, renewed inspiration and zeal. I could have been away for three months but opted instead for a shorter time, wanting to be here with you for Christmas. Please pray for me as I pledge my daily prayers for you! Fr. Taillon

Whatever he does, he is weary and disgusted with every thing; while he who is at peace with God is always happy, always joyous... Oh, beautiful life! Oh, beautiful death!' ~ St. Jean Marie Baptiste Vianney Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time FIRST IS BEST? "I'm first!" "No, I'm first!" "Mom, tell Ronnie that I get to be first this time!" From the earliest moments of our lives, there is something ingrained in us that is convinced that first is best. If not chosen first for the sports team, we are immediately deflated. We are coached to be "in first." We spend hours of waiting time in order to be first in line. We are caught in a culture that makes being first the highest priority. Against this backdrop, we come to church and hear a Gospel such as the one proclaimed today from Mark: "If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all" (Mark 9:35). This is a passage all about power. BEING POWERFUL Putting others first is one of the greatest challenges in a world that places so much emphasis on being powerful. Americans, for the most part, pride themselves on being a "super-power." Power, in and of itself, is not the problem. What can become problematic is the way that power is used. Our example of the perfect use of power, of course, is the Lord Jesus himself. Fully human and fully divine, the Lord put all the power that had been given to him at the service of others. Unfortunately, when one hears comments such as "he is a very powerful man" or "it is a very powerful country," one usually thinks of people or countries that use power to place themselves above apparently weaker people or places. The Gospel is a challenge to turn this notion on its head. We have each been given much power-the power flowing from Christ-in our baptism. Today we are called to use this power to place the needs of others before our own. First Youth Night September 30th! Date: Sunday, September 30th ~ Time: 6:00pm - 8:30pm ~ Cost: FREE Location: Fr. Greenan Center 128 High St. Wakefield Grades 8th, 9th & 10th Once a month, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Thomas More will be teaming up for an awesome youth night! There will be full band music, engaging talks, prayer, food, and a fun event at the end of each night. This month the theme is Too Stressed to be Blessed? School and life in general can be overwhelming, but how can we turn to our faith in stressful times and learn to trust in God. At the end of the night, get ready for an epic DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT! We hope you can make it! Questions?... email youth minister Emily Cuellar at youthministrystmsfa@gmail.com

Bereavement Support Program The Office of Life and Family will offer the Our Lady of Sorrows Bereavement Support program at St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St. (parking lot side entrance), Narragansett, on Wednesday evenings 6:30 pm ~ 8:00 pm, October 10, 2018 through December 12, 2018 (no meetings on Oct.31 and Nov. 21). This support group provides a peaceful place to share and learn about grief with the spiritual comfort of our Catholic faith. It is most appropriate for adults at least three months beyond their loss. Americans across the country are invited to pray the rosary coast to coast on Sunday, October 7th. St. Thomas More Parish is going to pray the rosary at 4PM at the seawall at Narragansett Pier lead by Scott Johnson, Director of Evangelization. All are invited and encouraged to attend. The time is now, to call upon God, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, to heal our country and return it to holiness. There is no cost to attend! For registration/ information, contact: Peter A Magnotta at 421-7833, ext. 217 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time One can always be amazed by the prophets and the wisdom books of the Old Testament. A hundred years or so before Christ, the Book of Wisdom points to the kind of teachings a just person such as Jesus would produce and the death that would result at the hands of the wicked. "Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us" and "Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him." When we are feeling set upon, we can cry out with Psalm 54, "O God, by your name save me, and by your might defend my cause." With Jesus, we often suffer from the contempt of others, and here we have assurance of God's help in our need. "Behold, God is my helper; the Lord sustains my life." When the situation in our country and the world seems difficult or even hopeless, we cry out to God for help and salvation for ourselves, for others in need, and for the Earth itself. Free Rosary Repair Bring your broken rosary beads to the parish office, in an envelope with your name & telephone number. We will call you when they have been repaired. Retrouvaille of New England A Christian Peer Ministry Retrouvaille is a worldwide program sponsored by the Catholic Church for married couples who are experiencing difficulties in their marriages. Often parishioners are in need of help and do not know where to go and cannot freely ask for information. Our peer ministry is led by couples who have lived through the honeymoon phase often followed by deep disillusion before finally finding resurrection in their marriage using the tools taught in the program. For more info., 800-470-2230 or www.helpourmarriage.com. Prayer Chain Ministry If you know someone who would like extra needed prayers, please call Jean at 783-3403 and express your request. Volunteers are needed for this important ministry. Please call Jean, if you can volunteer.
