Pastor s Notes Bishop O Connell has asked each pastor in the Diocese to set a day aside for prayer and fasting to pray for all the victims and survivors of clergy sexual abuse and for the atonement for the failures of bishops and other Church authorities who attempted to cover up these atrocities and crimes. He asks us to pray to God so that we can put our faith, hope and trust in Him to get us through this crisis. I therefore am setting Friday, September 21st as that day. I will also have a special holy hour on that day, in the church, at 7:30 PM. Jesus takes his disciples to an area away from the Jews so He can have a conversation uninterrupted like our Supreme Court hearings. This particular passage from Mark has that sandwich construction that we have previously discussed. The bread proclaims Jesus as the Messiah and the other portion speaks about the patient suffering that we must endure to be a follower of Jesus. The meat portion reveals how our salvation must come about. Notice how the two layers can be read without the middle section. But notice further how the middle section really explains how all this will be accomplished. While Peter is enlightened by God to understand that Jesus is the Messiah, he is still in ignorance about how this will come about and he certainly does not want to hear it. We are told by Jesus to follow Him. I suppose when Jesus says to Peter, Get behind me, Satan, Jesus is saying to Peter, you have it all wrong. Just follow me. Even though you do not like it, I am going to show you the way. Satan wants to keep Peter and ourselves in ignorance because this road masks the purpose of human suffering, our personal redemption made possible by God and our cooperation with all the trials and tribulations that come our way. Accepting these sufferings with patience is what is required of us. It is not to be masochistic, but rather for the sake of the Kingdom of God. The first reading is one of the Suffering Servant Songs. It obviously is speaking of Jesus, but it is not so obvious that it is also speaking of the demands that God has placed on us in witnessing to the Good News. God will be of little help to us if we are doing this for neurotic or prideful reasons. He wants us to do it for the Kingdom of God. While we believe in God, we cannot live just by that. We need to seek out what challenges God has given us. They are not always easy to find or should I say we may perceive them as too challenging. For example, we are in need of more adorers for our adoration chapel. It is a challenge for sure to commit one hour a week sometimes at an ungodly hour. If we are retired, it is always possible, but it takes a permanent effort. The Church is in crisis now. Can you at least come to make the holy hour? Can you spend some time to say the rosary for peace in Syria each day? We need volunteers for bingo every Friday night. They are small things, but they can make a big differences in our parish. It will not only help the parish, but it will also help your soul to get closer to God. Faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "Who do you say that Jesus is?" Who is Jesus for you - and what difference does he make in your life? Many in Israel recognized Jesus as a mighty man of God, even comparing him with the greatest of the prophets. Peter, always quick to respond whenever Jesus spoke, professed that Jesus was truly the "Christ of God" - "the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter, but only God. Through the "eyes of faith" Peter discovered who Jesus truly was. Peter recognized that Jesus was much more than a great teacher, prophet, and miracle worker. Peter was the first apostle to publicly declare that Jesus was the Anointed One, consecrated by the Father and sent into the world to redeem a fallen human race enslaved to sin and cut off from eternal life with God (Luke 9:20, Acts 2:14-36). The word for "Christ" in Greek is a translation of the Hebrew word for "Messiah" - both words literally mean the Anointed One. Jesus begins to explain the mission he was sent to accomplish Why did Jesus command his disciples to be silent about his identity as the anointed Son of God? They were, after all, appointed to proclaim the good news to everyone. Jesus knew that they did not yet fully understand his mission and how he would accomplish it. God's Anointed Son must suffer and die to atone for our sins Jesus told his disciples that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and die in order that God's work of redemption might be accomplished. How startled the disciples were when they heard this word. How different are God's thoughts and ways from our thoughts and ways (Isaiah 55:8). It was through humiliation, suffering, and death on the cross that Jesus broke the powers of sin and death and won for us eternal life and freedom from the slavery of sin and from the oppression of our enemy, Satan, the father of lies and the deceiver of humankind. We, too, have a share in the mission and victory of Jesus Christ: If we want to share in the victory of the Lord Jesus, then we must also take up our cross and follow where he leads us. What is the "cross" that you and I must take up each day? When my will crosses (does not align) with God's will, then his will must be done. To know Jesus Christ is to know the power of his victory on the cross where he defeated sin and conquered death through his resurrection. The Holy Spirit gives each of us the gifts and strength we need to live as sons and daughters of God. The Holy Spirit gives us faith to know the Lord Jesus personally as our Redeemer, and the power to live the Gospel faithfully, and the courage to witness to others the joy, truth, and freedom of the Gospel.
