On holy days of obligation, Catholics are obliged to participate in Mass. Every Sunday is a holy day of obligation, as are six other days throughout the year. The Solemnity of All Saints is celebrated on the first of November. It is instituted to honor all the saints, known and unknown, and, according to Pope Urban IV, to supply any deficiencies in the Faithfull's celebration of saints' feasts during the year. All Saint s Day Party Today In the School Hall following Mass November 2nd - All Soul s Day All Soul s Day Masses at 8:30 am, 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm. All Soul s Day is not a Holy Day of Obligation. All Souls Day is a solemn celebration in the Catholic Church commemorating all of those who have died and are now in Purgatory, being cleansed of their venial sins and the temporal punishments for the mortal sins that they had confessed, and being made pure before entering into the presence of God in Heaven. On this day every priest should celebrate three Requiem Masses: (1) for a specific intention (such as a mass request from the parish), (2) for all the faithful departed and (3) for the Holy Father's intentions. Note: The faithful may attend all three masses in one day, but may only receive communion a total of two times. On All Souls Day, we not only remember the dead, but we apply our efforts, through prayer, almsgiving, and the Mass, to their release from Purgatory. There are two plenary indulgences attached to All Souls Day, one for visiting a church and another for visiting a cemetery. (The plenary indulgence for visiting a cemetery can also be obtained every day from November 1-8, and, as a partial indulgence, on any day of the year.) While the actions are performed by the living, the merits of the indulgences are applicable only to the souls in Purgatory. Since a plenary indulgence removes all of the temporal punishment for sin, which is the reason why souls are in Purgatory in the first place, applying a plenary indulgence to one of the Holy Souls in Purgatory means that the Holy Soul is released from Purgatory and enters Heaven. Praying for the dead is a Christian obligation. The Church devotes the month of November to prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month.
A Message From Our Pastor Thursday, November 1, is the Solemnity of All Saints, a holyday of obligation for us to assist at Mass. On this day we remember, celebrate, and give thanks for all the Saints and ask their intercession as we seek to be counted among their number at the end of our earthly pilgrimage. Two Masses are offered at Saint Mary on the Solemnity itself: 8:30 and 7:00 pm. Friday, November 2, is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed or, as it is more commonly called, All Souls Day. There are three Masses offered that day at Saint Mary 8:30 am, 3:00 pm, and 7:00 pm. Confessions are heard following the 8:30 am and 3:00 pm Masses. Please take advantage of these opportunities to pray specially for all our beloved dead, that God forgive whatever sins they may have committed through human weakness and... grant them everlasting peace (Order of Christian Funerals, 175). It is also the First Friday of the month in honor of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus with exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament following the. Come and spend some time in prayer with our Eucharistic Lord giving Him praise and interceding for your beloved dead and those who have no one to pray for them! The number of Masses a priest may offer in one day is strictly regulated by the 1983 Code of Canon Law (CIC) and the 2002 Rights, Responsibilities, and Special Faculties of the Clergy of the Diocese of La Crosse (RSFC). The universal law of the Church states that if there is a scarcity of priests, the local Ordinary may allow priests, for a good reason, to celebrate twice on one day or even, if pastoral need requires it, three times on Sunday or holydays of obligation (CIC, 905). For our Diocese of La Crosse by grant of the diocesan Bishop, any priest, for just reason, can celebrate Mass twice on weekdays and, if pastoral need requires it, three times on Sundays and holydays of obligation (RSFC, 1.3). The offering of three Masses on All Souls Day a weekday and not a holyday of obligation would seem contrary to the above norms. The contradiction is only apparent as All Souls Day is the one non-holyday on which the priest is allowed indeed exhorted to offer three Masses. It was in 1915 that Pope Benedict XV (1854-1922) extended this privilege throughout the entire Church in perpetuity with his Apostolic Letter Incruentum altaris. In this Letter the Holy Father outlined the history and importance of the Mass as a suffrage or spiritual aid for the dead especially on All Souls Day. With regard to the Mass Pope Benedict XV teaches that the unbloody sacrifice of the of the Altar since in its nature does not differ from the sacrifice of the cross not only brings glory to those dwelling in heaven and is a remedy of salvation for those who find themselves in the sufferings of this present life, but also is of greatest help for the liberation of the souls of the faithful who rest in Christ. This is the perpetual and constant doctrine of holy Church. The traces and themes of this doctrine that in the course of the ages has brought greatest comfort to all Christians and elicited in the best of them a living admiration for the infinite love of Christ are found in the most ancient liturgies of the Latin Church and the Eastern Church, in the writings of the holy fathers, and finally are clearly expressed in many decrees of the ancient synods. The Council of Trent with a particularly solemn definition proposed this very thing to be believed by faith when it taught that the souls detained in Purgatory are helped by the suffrages (spiritual aids) of the faithful but principally by the acceptable sacrifice of the Altar (Session XXV, Decree Concerning Purgatory, December 4, 1563) and declared excommunicate those who would affirm that the holy sacrifice ought not to be offered for the living and the dead for sins, punishments, satisfactions, and other necessities (Session XXII, Canon 3, September 17, 1562). The Holy Father recalls that the Church has always intensely exhort(ed) the Christian faithful to not allow the souls of the dead to be deprived of these spiritual aids which abundantly spring forth from the Sacrifice of the Mass. Pope Benedict XV notes that, indeed, we must praise the Christian faithful who have never wavered in their love and in their duty regarding suffrage (spiritual aid) for the dead. He continues observing that when the virtues of faith and charity are alive in the souls of the Christian faithful that they more actively seek... to obtain the purification of the souls in Purgatory. A Message From Our Pastor Continued... Pope Benedict XV recalls that the desire among the faithful for the priest to offer two or three Masses on All Souls Day gradually grew such that at the request of the Kings of Spain and Portugal, Pope Benedict XIV (1675-1758) in 1748 granted this privilege to priests in those two kingdoms. Pope Benedict XV then offers some of the reasons he thinks it opportune in his day to extend this privilege to the Church throughout the world. He reveals that requests to the Apostolic See for the extension of this privilege have been made repeatedly and from all corners of the world for many years. Besides this positive development, the Holy Father notes that in his day some of the faithful do not have the sense of the obligation of charity that they should have towards the souls of the dead. He then expresses his fatherly desire that the dead especially those who die suddenly and those whose relatives may not offer suffrages (spiritual aids) for them be able to receive from the treasury of the infinite merits of Jesus Christ above all through the celebration of the Mass. Pope Benedict XV concludes the Letter with an impassioned plea for priests and for the faithful: We are certain that all Catholic priests although on the day of the Solemn Commemoration of the Faithful Departed can celebrate only one Mass would willingly and with zeal make use of this important privilege that We have granted. We strongly exhort all the sons and daughters of the Church conscious of the numerous obligations they have toward their brothers and sisters who are in the flames of Purgatory on this day would assist with deepest faith at the divine service. Thus, thanks to a great saving wave from so many beneficial suffrage s (spiritual aids) that penetrates Purgatory, very many souls of the dead may be able to be happily brought to share the heavenly blessings of the Church Triumphant. Echoing the plea of Pope Benedict XV, I exhort you to participate in at least one Mass on All Souls Day. Church discipline does not limit the number of Masses at which you can assist so consider participating in more than one Mass even all three! However, keep in mind that Church discipline allows you to receive Holy Communion at only two Masses in the same day. Please note that Mass is offered at 8:30 am on Saturday, November 3, the first Saturday of the month in honor of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
