Story of Hope Prayer of Dedication Offertory: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling text: Charles Wesley; music: Howard Goodall Cathedral Choir; David Gardner, director Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down, Fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; Visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast; Let us all in thee inherit, let us find the promised rest. Take away the love of sinning, Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive, Suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, Pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish then thy new creation, pure and spotless let us be; Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee. Changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise. Sermon: School of Love: Your Brother s Keeper Scott Gronholz Texts: 1 John 3:11-20 (p.990) 11 For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We must not be like Cain who was from the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. 13 Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters, that the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death. 15 All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them. 16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 17 How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? 18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 19 And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. *Hymn of Response #776: Let Us Break Bread Together Let us break bread together on our knees; Let us break bread together on our knees; Let us drink wine together on our knees; Let us drink wine together on our knees. Let us praise God together on our knees; Let us praise God together on our knees. <<SENT>>
Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Celebration of the Lord s Supper *Closing Hymn #708: Blest be the Tie That Binds (st. 1) Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. *Benediction Postlude: Praeludium in C minor (BWV 546) J. The Bible teaches us that God is love and that the central purpose of our lives is to love. It's not hard to agree with the greatness of love. It's just that it is hard to really do. We don't need sentimentality or moralizing. We need help. The good news is that Jesus is our help and the good news of Jesus unlocks our hearts not just to love him but to love with him. So what can we learn from the apostle of love if we sit at his feet and learn what he has to teach us? How can believers live in intentional community designed to retrain our hearts in gospel love?
