TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Our Great High Priest October 27 & 28, 2018 5:00pm & 8:00am AS WE GATHER As Jesus would open up the eyes of blind Bartimaeus, so the Spirit opens our eyes through God s Word to see our Lord as He really is. More than just a physical healer, Jesus Christ is our eternal Savior and great High Priest exalted above the heavens. In His mercy and compassion, He comes to His people in their need. As we come to Him asking for mercy and greater healing from our sin, we can be assured His promise is true: I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble (Jeremiah 31:9). WELCOME "Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law." Romans 13:7-8 HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #644 The Church s One Foundation At 5:00pm choir sings verse 4 The Church s one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the Word. From heav n He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died. Elect from every nation, Yet one o er all the earth; Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses With every grace endued. with a scornful wonder The world sees her oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up, How long? And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song. Through toil and tribulation And tumult of her war She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest. Yet she on earth has union With God, the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won. O blessed heav nly chorus! Lord, save us by Your grace That we, like saints before us, May see You face to face. INVOCATION Page 203 In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Our help is in the name of the Lord, People: who made heaven and earth. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? People: but with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. People: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. 1 continued 2

Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the +Son and of the Holy Spirit. 5:00 PSALM 46 God is our refuge and strength, People: a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear thought the earth gives way, People: though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, People: though the mountains tremble at its swelling. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, People: The holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; People: God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; People: He utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; People: The God of Jacob is our fortress. Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. People: He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; People: he burns the chariots with fire. Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, People: I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; People: the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8:00 CHOIR SONG God is Our Refuge and Strength KYRIE & GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Page 204 3 Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. To God on high be glory And peace to all the earth; Goodwill from God in heaven Proclaimed at Jesus birth! We praise and bless you, Father; your holy name, we sing Our thanks for your great glory, Lord God, our Heav nly King. To you, O solebegotten, The Father s Son, we pray; O Lamb of God, our Savior, you take our sins away. Have mercy on us, Jesus; Receive our heartfelt cry, Where you in pow r are seated At God s right hand on high. For you alone are holy; you only are the Lord. Forever and forever, Be worshipped and adored; You with the Holy Spirit Alone are Lord Most High. In God the Father s glory. Amen! our glad reply. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Let us pray. O God, the helper of all who call on you, People: have mercy on us and give us eyes of faith to see your Son that we may follow Him on the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 31:7 9 (The Lord, in His mercy, will restore His people.) For thus says the LORD: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, O LORD, save your people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together; a great company, they shall return here. With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 4

EPISTLE Hebrews 7:23 28 (Jesus, in His mercy, is our great High Priest.) The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 5:00 6-8 GRADES If You Love Me 8:00 CHOIR ANTHEM with Congregation Lord Keep Us Steadfast Oh, that my ways may be steadfast in keeping Your statues! Then I will not be put to shame. Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast in Your Word. Congregation: Congregation: 5 continued Lord, keep us steadfast in Your Word; Curb those who by deceit or sword Would wrest the kingdom from Your Son And bring to naught all He has done. And Jesus said, and Jesus said, If you abide in My Word, You are truly My disciples, you are truly My disciples, Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast in Your Word. Lord Jesus Christ, Your pow r make known, For you are Lord of lords alone; Defend Your holy Church that we May sing Your praise eternally. Congregation: There is one body, there is one Spirit, there is one hope for which we live, One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, One God and Father of us all. Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast in Your Word. O Comforter of priceless worth, Send peace and unity on earth; Support us in our final strife And lead us out of death to life. Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast, Lord keep us steadfast in Your Word. ALLELUIA & VERSE Page 205 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 10 th chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10:46 52 (Blind Bartimaeus seeks the mercy of Jesus and is healed.) And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! And Jesus stopped and said, Call him. And they called the blind man, saying to him, Take heart. Get up; he is calling you. And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? And the blind man said to him, Rabbi, let me recover my sight. And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way. This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ. 6

CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #578 Thy Strong Word Thy strong word did cleave the darkness; At Thy speaking it was done. For created light we thank Thee, While Thine ordered seasons run. Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, Dark as night and deep as death, Broke the light of Thy salvation, Breathed Thine own life breathing breath. Thy strong Word bespeaks us righteous; Bright with Thine own holiness, Glorious now, we press toward glory, And our lives, our hopes confess. From the cross Thy wisdom shining Breaketh forth in conqu ring might; From the cross forever beameth All Thy bright redeeming light. Give us lips to sing Thy glory, Tongues Thy mercy to proclaim, Throats that shout the hope that fills us, Mouths to speak Thy holy name. Alleluia, alleluia! May the light which Thou dost send Fill our songs with alleluias, Alleluias without end! God the Father, light-creator, To Thee laud and honor be. To Thee, Light of Light begotten, Praise be sung eternally. Holy Spirit, light-revealer, Glory, glory be to Thee. Mortals, angels, now and ever Praise the holy Trinity! SERMON Faith Follows NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, 7 continued very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. Help them to proclaim your Law in such a way that every excuse is stripped from the mouths of their hearers and all are held accountable to God. Help them to proclaim your 8

Gospel, that all may know Jesus Christ to be their sole righteousness before you, cleansed by His sacrificial death and gift of salvation to be received by faith. Lord, in your mercy, People: bear civic authority in our land. Bless our president and Congress, our justices and magistrates, and all who serve. Protect them from the temptations that beset their offices, and impart to them wisdom and courage. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. know the bondage of sin and yet imagine themselves to be free. Open their eyes by the words of Jesus, and grant them the true freedom of sonship and a permanent place in your household through Him. Remember especially Dorothy, Larry, Marge, Dolores, Bob, Herb, Cindy, Anita, Scott, LuEva, Dick, Nancy, Jan, Shirley, Gladys, Russ, Arlene, Dorothy, John, Arlene, Jack, Shirley, Jonathan, Leonard, and Sarah. Have mercy upon each one. Grant them release from their afflictions. Sustain their confidence and hope in the full and final healing that awaits them on the day of our Lord s appearing. Lord, in your mercy, come to partake of Christ s own body and blood for the forgiveness of their sins. Grant them the gifts of repentance and faith and, by the power of your Spirit, the intention to amend their lives and align them with your will and purpose. Lord, in your mercy, 9 Mighty Fortress, Rock of Refuge, your people have found refuge in you from age to age. Receive our thanks for all your servants who have departed this life in faith. We especially bless you today for the great reformers of your Church who ever call us back to the Gospel and to the righteousness we have in Christ alone. Keep us in the fellowship of grace, and bring us at last by to our heavenly home and the joy of seeing Jesus face to face. Lord, in your mercy, Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. All: Amen. SACRAMENT PREFACE Page 208 The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings you so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for your boundless love shown to us when you sent your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and saying: People: 10 Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored; Heav n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of your name. Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord; Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

PRAYERS, WORDS OF OUR LORD & PAX DOMINI Page 209 Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for you have had mercy on us and given your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. In these last days, you have poured out your Holy Spirit on your Church that your sons and daughters might proclaim the wonders of your salvation in Christ Jesus, our Lord. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon your gathered people that, faithfully eating and drinking the body and blood of your Son, we may go forth to proclaim His salvation to the ends of the earth. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat, this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI Lamb of God Page 210 O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray. Since we have a priest who suffered, Knowing weakness, tears, and pain, Who like us was tried and tempted, Unlike us, without a stain- Since He shard our lowly place, Let us boldly seek His grace. Sacrifice and suff ring over, Now, He sits at God s right hand, Crowned with praise, no more an outcast, His preeminence long-planned; Such a great High Priest we have, Strong to help, supreme to save. Love s example, hope s attraction, Faith s beginning and its end, Pioneer of our salvation, Mighty advocate and friend; Jesus, high in glory raised, Our ascended Lord be praised! HYMN #838 The Saints in Christ Are One in Every Place The saints in Christ are one in ev ry place To serve the Gospel of His costly grace; From those first days to this, our hope the same: The love of Christ, one Lord, one saving name. 12 In chains for Christ! His pris ners love to sing, For slaves and free rejoice to praise our King; What though the Church on earth still suffers wrong? The cross of Christ remains our pilgrim song. To live is Christ, for us, to die is gain; Where shall be our hunger, danger, pain? Our joy to preach good news to rich and poor, Then be with Christ, to live forevermore. Lord Jesus Christ! Heav n s praise let earth repeat; The work that you began, you will complete. By grace let ev ry foe become your friend; Your day, O Christ, shall dawn and never end.

HYMN #744 Amazing Grace Amazing grace how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, Was blind but now I see! The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; His grace has brought me safe thus far, His grace will lead me home. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail And mortal life shall cease, Amazing grace shall then prevail In heaven s joy and peace. When we ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. COMMON DISMISSAL NUNC DIMITTIS Page 211 O Lord, now let your servant Depart in heav nly peace, For I have seen the glory Of your redeeming grace: A light to lead the Gentiles Unto your holy hill, The glory of your people, your chosen Israel. All glory to the Father, All glory to the Son, All glory to the Spirit, Forever Three in One; For as in the beginning, Is now, shall ever be, God s triune name resounding Through all eternity. POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING 13 Let us pray. Gracious God, our heavenly Father, you have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of your Son s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICAMUS & BENEDICTION Let us bless the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace. CLOSING HYMN #656 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from every need That hath us now o er taken. The old evil foe Now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected; But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God Himself elected. Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, Of Sabaoth Lord, And there s none other God; He holds the field forever. Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us, We tremble not, we fear no ill; They shall not over pow r us. This world s prince may still Scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none. He s judged; the deed is done; One little word can fell him. The Word they still shall let remain Nor any thanks have for it; He s by our side upon the plain With His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife, Though these all be gone, Our vict ry has been won The Kingdom ours remaineth.
