October 14, 2018 ORDER OF WORSHIP TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST The beginning of the opening voluntary is a call to silent, personal meditation. Please silence all electronic devices as we prepare our hearts and minds to worship God. 10:00 a.m. PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of truth, how difficult it is for us to be truthful before you. We want to hide our anxieties and fears, our resentments and self-centeredness. Cut through our evasions by the truth of your word, and help us to be honest. God of mercy, your hopes for us are greater than our own, yet our failures do not surprise you. Forgive us, we pray, even for the sin we cannot see. God of love, accept us as we are but do not leave us here. Help us put behind all that is unworthy, that by your grace we may live in confidence and joy following Jesus our Savior. OPENING VOLUNTARY Prelude in F Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) Solemn Melody Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941) KYRIE ELEISON Kile Smith (b. 1956) INTROIT Lord, for thy tender mercy s sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past, and give us grace to amend our sinful lives. To decline from sin and incline to virtue, that we may walk in a perfect heart before thee now and evermore. Amen. Richard Farrant (1530-1580) CALL TO WORSHIP O God you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call upon your name; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy. Let us worship God! *THE PEACE As a forgiven people, let us share Christ s peace with one another. The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS But as for me, I am a worm and no man, scorned by all and despised by the people. All who see me laugh me to scorn; they curl their lips and wag their heads, saying, He trusted in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, if he delights in him. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Almighty and ever living God, you are beyond the grasp of our highest thought, but within the reach of our frailest trust. By the working of your Spirit, illumine what is dark; raise and support what is low; deepen what is shallow; and make our restless hearts to rest in him for whom we were made and in whose name we pray. Amen. NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Mark 10:17-22 (p. 46) Holy wisdom, holy Word. Thanks be to God. CHILDREN S MOMENT OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Job 23:1-9; 16-17 (p. 471) Holy wisdom, holy Word. Thanks be to God. PSALTER Psalm 22:1-8 Alec Wyton (1922-2007) My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? And are so far from my cry and from the words of my distress? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer; by night as well, but I find no rest. Yet you are the Holy One, enthroned upon the praises of Israel. Our forefathers put their trust in you; they trusted in you and were not put to shame. HYMN (seated) During the organ introduction, children through fifth grade may process to the Chapel to meet for the Gathering. Go with us, Lord, and guide the way, Through this and every coming day, That in your Spirit strong and true, Our lives may be our gift to you.
