Genesis 1-2: Creation In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. [Genesis 1:1] Day 1: Day 2: Day 3: Day 4: Day 5: Day 6: Day 7: God created Light. God created the Heaven (probably meaning the atmosphere, or space). God created dry light, and plants. God created the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars. God created Fish and Birds. God created other Land Animals, and Man and Woman. God rested the Creation was complete, and very good. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. [Genesis 2:1-2] So God also created all of the heavens in the 6 days, and all creatures in them which also means angels (including Satan), seraphim, cherubim, etc. [Genesis 2:7-25] God makes man, puts man in the Garden of Eden, commands him not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (lest he die), makes woman from man, and thus begins marriage (all on Day 6). 14

Genesis 3: Fall of Man The serpent (which is Satan, the dragon, and the devil see Revelation 12:7-9) tempted Eve, the woman. Eve was deceived, and ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam was with her, and she gave him of that fruit. He was not deceived, but he ate of the fruit, disobeying God s commandment to him. He died in trespasses and sin that day, and the human race died in Adam (see I Cor. 15:22). God cursed the serpent and put enmity between the serpent and the seed of woman. God multiplied the sorrow and conception of woman, and gave rule to the husband. God cursed the earth for Adam s sake, connected hard labor to eating, and pronounced physical death upon him Adam s body died 930 years later. God clothed Adam and Eve with coats of skins, and drove them from Eden. 15

Genesis 4-6: Spread of Sin Cain, the first man begotten by man, murdered his younger brother Abel, the second man begotten by man (Read Gen 4). Adam then begot another son in his own image, named Seth, as well as other sons and daughters. Sin spread greatly. God showed grace to Noah, and commanded him to build an ark to save his family and many other creatures from destruction. 16

Genesis 7-9: The Flood Noah built the ark, a huge floating structure, as God instructed him. In the ark were Noah, his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and all of their wives, 7 of every clean kind of air-breathing animal, and 2 of every other kind. God caused it to rain 40 days, and broke up the fountains of the deep. God protected those in the ark, and they stayed in it for 1 year and 10 days. When they came out, Noah sacrificed unto God. God gave men permission to eat animals, but declared that murder of humans should be punished by death. God set a rainbow in the sky as a token of his promise that God would not 17 destroy the whole earth by a flood again.

Genesis 10: Descendants of Noah Just as the whole human race came from Adam and Eve, the whole human race now comes from Noah and his wife. Genesis 11: The Tower of Babel God told Noah s descendants to replenish the earth (Gen 9:1), but they preferred not to be scattered (Gen 11:4). So they decided to stay together, and build a city and a tower, for the glory of their own name. God confounded their languages, so man went from one language to speaking many different languages. This stopped the building. The great-great grandson of Shem (Noah s son) was name Peleg for in his days was the earth divided. Peleg s great-great grandson was named Terah, and he lived in Ur of the Chaldees not far from Babel. Terah had three sons: Haran, Nahor, and Abram. 19

Genesis 12-13: Abram & Sarai God calls Abram, who is 75, to leave Ur and travel to Canaan. God promises: To make of him a great nation To bless him and make his name great, and to make him a blessing To bless them who bless Abram, and curse them that curse him To bless all the families of the earth in him. Abram travels by faith to Canaan, and built altars unto the Lord. In a famine, Abram moves to Egypt, and hides that Sarai is his wife. (She is his wife and his half-sister). God protects Sarai, and brings them out of Egypt with riches. Abram and his nephew, Lot, go different directions. Lot goes east toward Sodom. Abram goes west toward Canaan. God promises Canaan to Abram s descendants. Abram settles in Mamre in Canaan. 20

Genesis 14-16: Battle, Belief, Hagar & Ishmael GENESIS 14 Four kings from Mesopotamia fought 5 kings near what is now called the Dead Sea. The 5 kings lost. Lot s family captive. Abram, his servants, and some Canaanite friends pursued the four kings, fought, and freed the captives. Abram gave a tenth of the spoil to Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of God who had blessed him. Abram refused to take spoil for himself. GENESIS 15 God took Abram under the stars and promised him that his descendants would be numerous like the stars. Abram believed God. He made sacrifice, and God told him that some of his descendants would be slaves in Egypt for 400 years, but that God would bring them out and give Canaan to them. GENESIS 16 At about the age of 86, with Sarai at about 76, they still had no child. Sarai gave her Egyptian handmaiden, Hagar, to Abram as a wife to have a child. Hagar conceived, and began to be haughty toward Sarai. Sarai got rough with Hagar, who fled into the wilderness. The angel of the Lord told Hagar to return, that she would bear a son Ishmael, who would be a fighting man, dwelling in the presence of his brethren. She returned. 21

Genesis 17-18: Abram s Name Changed, Circumcision, and God s Visit GENESIS 17 At the age of 99, God changed Abram s name to Abraham, which means father of a multitude. He changed Sarai s name to Sarah, or princess. He had one 13 year old son, Ishmael, at that time. God told him he would give a son to him and Sarah, and Abraham laughed. God commanded Abraham, and all the men in his household to be circumcised as a token of God s covenant with him. He obeyed. GENESIS 18 Three men (God and two angels) visited Abraham as he sat in the door of his tent in Mamre. Abraham ran to meet them, and hastily prepared them a feast. God said that Abraham and Sarah would have a son together. Sarah laughed, and God caught and gently rebuked her for laughing. God revealed to Abraham that He would deal with the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah. Knowing that Lot was in Sodom, Abraham pled with God to spare the city for the sake of 50, then 45, then 40, 30, 20, and finally 10 righteous people. There were not 10 righteous people in Sodom. The angels went to save Lot before destruction came. 22

Genesis 19: The End of Sodom & Gomorrah Lot was just and righteous and that means he was redeemed by Christ, and born of God s Spirit, and is now in heaven. (II Peter 2:7-8, Genesis 19:1-3) God prospered Lot, and he lived a working life along with Abraham. (Genesis 13:1-7) Then Lot chose an easy life among the idle, sinful people of Sodom. (Genesis 13:11-13) Then Lot had to be rescued by his uncle Abraham after the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah lost a war. (Genesis 14:8-16) Angels came to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah and save Lot. The men of the city wanted to rape them, but the angels smote the men with blindness. (Genesis 19:1-11) Lot was despised by his neighbors and family, and became indecisive. (Genesis 19:8-16) Lot also became timid and fearful. (Genesis 19:17-22) Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire and brimstone. (Genesis 19:24) Lot lost his wife to disobedience. (Genesis 19:26) Lot became drunken and incestuous, and his earthly life was sad. (Genesis 19:30-38) 23

Genesis 20-21: God Protects Sarah, who Becomes a Mother GENESIS 20 As he had done in Egypt, Abraham claimed that Sarah was his sister when they came to dwell in Gerar, in the area the Philistines would occupy. Abimelech the king took Sarah, intending her to be his wife (at 90!) but God kept her from him, and revealed to Abimelech that she was Abraham s wife. Abimelech released her, and the infertility that had come upon his household was healed. GENESIS 21 When Abraham was 100, and Sarah 90, God fulfilled his promise and gave them a son. They named the son Isaac, which means laughter they had laughed at God. Abraham s other wife and child, Hagar and Ishmael, mocked at Sarah and Isaac. Sarah insisted that Abraham expel Hagar and Ishmael, and he did. They almost died of thirst, but God spared Hagar and Ishmael, who became the father of the Arabs. 24 Abraham made a covenant with Abimelech s people about the wells he had dug.

Genesis 22-23: God Tests Abraham, and Sarah Dies GENESIS 22 When Isaac had grown old enough to talk and carry a large pile of wood, God told Abraham to offer Isaac as a burnt offering on top of a specific mountain. Abraham obeyed God, and he, Isaac, and some servants made a 3-day journey there. Abraham told the servants that he and Isaac would go worship on the mountaintop, and that both of them would return. Isaac carried the wood, and Abraham carried the fire and knife. Abraham said that God would provide himself a lamb (Jesus Christ). When Abraham had tied up Isaac, laid him on the altar, and was about to slay Isaac, God stopped him. Abraham had passed the test, and offered instead a ram which had his horns caught in a nearby thicket. GENESIS 23 Sarah died at 127, when Abraham was 137 years old. Abraham mourned, and bought a field with a cave in it, named Machpelah, for a family cemetery. He purchased it for 400 shekels of silver from Ephron the Hittite. It was the only piece of the land of Canaan he bought. God had given him all the land of Canaan for a inheritance, which his descendants would later possess. 25

Genesis 24-25: Isaac Marries; Abraham Dies GENESIS 24. When Isaac was forty, Abraham sent his servant to his family s home to find a wife for Isaac, for he did not want Isaac married to a Canaanite woman. The servant travelled far, and asked God to show him the woman he should ask, by her kindness to him and his animals. Rebekah, Abraham s grand-niece, fulfilled the sign. When asked, she was willing to go marry Isaac, and her family gave their permission. Abraham servant was thankful for God s guidance, and Rebekah married Isaac. GENESIS 25 Abraham married a woman named Keturah, and they had six sons. Abraham gave gifts to these sons and sent them away, that Isaac s inheritance might be clear. Abraham died at 175 years old. He gave up the ghost, was gathered to his people, and Isaac and Ishmael buried him by Sarah. Isaac and Rebekah had twins, the older named Esau, and the younger Jacob. Jacob got Esau to sell his birthright as the older to him for a bowl of pottage, or stew. 26
