All Souls Day; Often overshadowed by the two days preceding it, Halloween (Oct. 31) and All Saints Day (Nov. 1), All Souls Day is a solemn celebration in the Roman Catholic Church commemorating all of those who have died and are now in Purgatory, being cleansed of their venial sins and the temporal punishments for the mortal sins that they had confessed, and being made pure before entering into the presence of God in Heaven. Offering Our Efforts on Behalf of the Holy Souls On All Souls Day, we not only remember the dead, but we apply our efforts, through prayer, almsgiving, and the Mass, to their release from Purgatory. There are two plenary indulgences attached to All Souls Day, one for visiting a church and another for visiting a cemetery. (The plenary indulgence for visiting a cemetery can also be obtained every day from November 1-8, and, as a partial indulgence, on any day of the year.) While the actions are performed by the living, the merits of the indulgences are applicable only to the souls in Purgatory. Since a plenary indulgence removes all of the temporal punishment for sin, which is the reason why souls are in Purgatory in the first place, applying a plenary indulgence to one of the Holy Souls in Purgatory means that the Holy Soul is released from Purgatory and enters Heaven. Praying for the Dead is a Christian obligation. In the modern world, when many have come to doubt the Church's teaching on Purgatory, the need for such prayers has only increased. The Church devotes the month of November to prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month The Mass of All Souls day will be celebrated at St Wendelin Church, Friday November 2 @ 7pm, also at St. Sylvester Church, Friday, November 2 @ 7pm and at Holy Angels Church, Friday, November 2 @ 7pm. All are welcome to the Mass of All Souls. Please pray for the deceased in all our parishes. Our Book of Remembrance will be available at all of our Churches to add the names of your relatives and friends so they will be remembered during the month of November. Dear Parish Family Someone said to me this past week, and I am paraphrasing, I am really excited! I just feel like sometimes we get into a routine and start going through the motions, but this weekend forced me to snap out of it, and I feel so much more ready to grow. As she was speaking, I began to see what she was saying. Few new things will grow until you till the soil, and the soil is being tilled! I am not sure how your Sunday Mass experience was last week, but I know that mine was so blessed! I was excited to see St. Albert so full Saturday night at 4pm with so many beautiful people that I love, and the Lord could not have been more generous in the grace that He poured out at the Holy Angels Masses! What a beautiful parish family down in Hays! I truly feel spoiled to have our parishes coming together! This week I will be back in Holy Apostles, and next week, I am look forward to getting a full St. Sylvester experience:). Blessing, grace, healing, strength and love to all! In Christ Fr. In lieu of a review this week, I would like to answer a good question that was asked about the previous review, concerning the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa (The Black Madonna). The reason why this icon is important to many Catholics, especially the Polish Catholics, is because it was originally painted by St Luke - yes, Luke the Evangelist that gave us the Gospel of Luke and also the Acts of the Apostles. In addition to being a physician, as well as Evangelist, he was also a skilled painter. This icon is revered by Polish people because of how it miraculously saved the monastery of Jasna Gora from a Swedish invasion in 1655. Seventy monks and 180 local Polish nobility held off the invading 4,000 Swedes for 40 days, saving their icon and also turning the course of the Second Northern War. King John II Casimir Vasa crowned Our Lady of Czestochowa as Queen and Protector of Poland. If you have ever seen a photo of this icon, you will notice that it does have scars. These are from when a Tartar arrow struck the icon and left a mark on Our Lady's throat. In 1430, Hussites stole it and desecrated the icon. They broke it into three pieces and one of the robbers gashed the image with his sword. Amazingly, he died moments later. Those three scars have been repaired several times, but each time, after the repair, they miraculously reappear. Those are just a few of the miracles and reasons why many people, especially the Polish, hold this icon in such high regard. Live Jesus in our hearts... Forever! Deacon Tim ST. The Other Side of the Door There is a story by Tim Archer about a country doctor who made house calls. Every time he visited a patient, he took his dog along; however, the dog never went into the house with the doctor. He would wait patiently on the porch. One day, the doctor visited a terminally ill man who didn t have much time left. The man, obviously afraid of dying, shared his fear with the doctor and asked him what death would be like. The doctor pondered the man s question for a few minutes. Then he got up and opened the front door. His dog eagerly raced in to greet him. The doctor explained to his patient that, while the dog didn t have any idea what was behind the door, he knew that his master was there and wanted to be with him. The doctor then told the man that he doesn t know all the particulars about death, but he is confident that his Master will be waiting for him and that s all that really matters. When we are apprehensive about the future, we must remember that our Divine Master is always on the other side of the door guiding us, leading us and, ultimately, greeting us. Well, my friends, they say all good things must come to an end and, unfortunately, this will be my final column. Because of our consolidation with St. Sylvester s and Holy Angels, the bulletin is being reformatted and there will be space limitations. It s been an honor and a privilege to share parish events and my personal thoughts with you for the past three years. When Fr. Steve first asked me to write the column, I was apprehensive and wasn t sure I could handle it. But I know I had help from the Holy Spirit for the words to flow. Thanks to all of you who read my articles and those who took the time to give me feedback. It meant the world to me. Thank you, Fr. Steve, for challenging me to do something outside my comfort zone and allowing me to grow as a person. The best part was having the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people from our Holy Apostles Parish family. It has been an amazing experience. Stephanie Website: www.holyapostlesparish.org Email: praise@holyapostlesparish.org November 10, 2018 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM We may often think we are not good enough to deserve God s love and mercy. In reality we can never do anything in life for us to deserve God s love and Mercy. We need to accept the fact that God has painfully paid the price for us with the death of His Son, Jesus. All we have to do is accept it. Our guest speaker and presider will be Father Joe Freedy who has been recently assigned to St. Alexis parish in Wexford as Parochial Vicar. Father Joe has been described as a contemporary speaker, in touch with the moment, someone who understands real life, is reflective and also contemplative. At our November s service Father Joe s teaching will surely bring a new perspective to how we learn to accept Gods love and mercy. In addition to Father Freedy teaching, the service includes adoration of the Blessed Sacrament ending with benediction. An open invitation is extended to you to join with us in celebrating the love of Jesus. You are encouraged to visit the Festival of Praise page in the Holy Apostles Parish website. There you will find many pictures and videos of previous services. Our Praise Band Repertoire now includes more than forty beautiful songs and continues to grow monthly. Many of these songs can viewed and listened to on You Tube as performed by the recording artist. PRAYER FOR THE TRANSITION OF ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! Father of Mercy During this time of transition, help us grow in unity with Holy Angels Parish and St. Sylvester Parish Grant us wisdom and willingness To understand how our parishes will become stronger and more vibrant in fulfilling the Mission of the Church. Assist us in opening our arms to welcome Others as we continue to journey On Mission for The Church Alive1 Help us, O Lord, to trust in the future you have planned for us. This we ask through Christ Our Lord. Amen CYM BASKETBALL Teen girls and boys in 9-12 grade interested in playing basketball for the Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) league are invited to an open gym on November 4th at St. Sylvester gym. Girls are invited from 6-7:30pm and the boys will meet from 7:30-9pm. To learn more about our CYM basketball teams please contact Mrs. Reinhart at 412-882-8593 EX 216 MARCH FOR LIFE Deacon Tim is organizing a bus trip for the 2019 March for Life, which will take place on Friday, January 18th in Washington, DC. Since the 1973 Supreme Court cases, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which legalized abortion-on-demand in our country, over 60 million lives have been lost to abortion. Ending abortions and promoting a culture of life is why we march each year. Deacon Tim is trying to determine which size bus to reserve for our group. If you are interested in joining us, please send an email to deacontim@verizon.net. If you cannot join us, please pray for our safety on the trip and for the end to abortion. "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer Invite someone to Mass next weekend! To: From: This is a personal and hear elt invita on from me and my family of Holy Apostles Parish to come and join us each weekend at Church. Will you come and pray with us? WE ARE SAVING A SEAT FOR YOU! THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner Many would say that I watch too much news and they are probably right. But recently I have noticed that the words and actions of many of our political people and their backers have become, at least in my eyes, very sinful in their content and actions, yet many of them would tell you they are Christians. But they show no indication, in word or deed, that they even know what a Christian is. Many of them seem to have lost the ability to recognize what sin is when it is standing right in front of them. From earliest times (Gen. 4:7) we are warned to stay on our toes. Be watchful for sin as it is lurking on our doorstep, looking for some way to attack. Overcoming sin can be a formidable task, but it is not hopeless. We have Jesus saving power through his death and resurrection, and we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. But sensible people need to recognize sin when it shows itself, and work to avoid it. A man who is sometimes referred to as a lay theologian, G.K. Chesterton once commented: My sins are worse than others because it is my business to be better. For us to be better (which is our business), we must recognize sin and avoid it, before it invades and begins to do damage to our hearts and souls. Stay in touch with God through daily prayer, and through the power of the Sacraments Christ has instituted for us.
