Summer mini-series God s Covenants Part 1: Abraham Part 2: Moses Part 3: David
Why study these old covenants? For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4
The basics: God s covenants are all about relationship
The people who related to God best-- Abraham, Moses, David treated him with startling familiarity. They talked to God as if he were sitting in a chair beside them, as one might talk to a counselor, a boss, a parent, or a lover. They treated him like a person. PHILIP YANCEY, Disappointment With God
The basics: God s covenants are all about relationship fundamental to understanding the bible always at His initiative and by His grace for our good and His glory both conditional and unconditional filled with promises we can trust

Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
Genesis 12:4-6 So Abram left, as the Lord had told him they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there. Abram traveled through the land
Genesis 12:7-8 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, To your offspring I will give this land. So he built an altar there to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.
Genesis 15:1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.
Genesis 15:2-3 But Abram said, Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.
Genesis 15:4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.
Genesis 15:5 He took him outside and said, Look up at the sky and count the stars if indeed you can count them. Then he said to him, So shall your offspring be.
Genesis 15:6 Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.
Genesis 15:7 He also said to him, I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.
Genesis 15:8 But Abram said, Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?
Genesis 15:9 So the Lord said to him, Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.
Genesis 15:10-11 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.
Genesis 15:12-13 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. Then the Lord said to him, Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own
Genesis 15:14-15 and they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.
Genesis 15:16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.
Genesis 15:17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
Genesis 15:18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, To your descendants I give this land
Genesis 17:1-2 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. Then I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.
Genesis 17:3-5 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
Genesis 17:6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.
Genesis 17:7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
Genesis 17:8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.
Genesis 18:17-18 Then the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.
Genesis 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.
