Operation (Monday) Sunday.

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matt 28:18-20 ESV)

Now it is time only to strengthen what remains is sometimes a reaction to ecclesial difficulties and an evil world. However, it is unlikely that an ecclesia can be strengthened without the fulfilment of its preaching obligations. Bro Ron Abel, Quenching All the Fiery Darts of the Wicked, p. 15

I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word (John 17:20 ESV)

Romans 10:10-18

John 20:20-21 ESV When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.

What is preaching?

Preaching & Teaching What s the difference? Nehemiah 8:1-8 "And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ." (Acts 5:42 ESV) "But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also." (Acts 15:35 ESV)

2 Peter 2:4-10 Jonah 1:2, 3:2 (cp Mat 12:41) Preaching involves manifesting the Word of God and proclaiming the Gospel. Besides talking about the joys of the Kingdom, preaching necessarily involves pointing out the wickedness of this present world. Bro Nigel Bernard, The Testimony Magazine, June/July 2009, What Is Preaching? p. 120

Luke 6:26 ESV Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.

Ezekiel 33:6, 2 Timothy 4:2 It is necessary to distinguish two aspects to preaching; what may be regarded as two sides of the same coin. There is on the one hand the bringing of men and women to repentance and the way of salvation; there is on the other hand the defending of the honour and righteousness of our God. Bro Graham Pearce, Milestones Reprint, Preaching Today, p. 16, 1988

But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. 14 (most manuscripts after vs 12) 15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves." (Matt 23:13-15 ESV)

The Lord Jesus Christ John 7:7 ESV "The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil."

The Lord Jesus Christ Isa 61:1-2 (cp. Luke 4:16-21) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news (euaggelizo) to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim (kerusso) liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. (Luke 4:18-19 ESV) G2097 εὐαγγελίζω euaggelizo (yoo-ang-ghel-id'-zo) v. 1. to bring good news 2. evangelize 3. (especially) to proclaim the good news of redemption through Jesus (i.e. the gospel) G2784 kerusso v. 1. to herald (as a public crier), especially divine truth (the gospel)

John 18:19-21 ESV "19The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. 21Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said."

9:15-18 Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 9:19-23 that by all means I might save some 10:31-33 not seeking my own advantage 1 Corinthians 9/10 - Compelled To Preach To All

Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old. Matthew 13:52 (ESV) After the Parables of the Kingdom

What observations can you make?

Personal Preaching Connecting on Multiple Levels a very very very nice man integrity and trust looked me in the eye authentically engaged truly complementary no flattery Interest in the whole person I brought this for you a personal interest

Keep the faith but don t keep it to yourself. Bro Dan Wilton, Caribbean Mission

Preach! and if necessary, use words.

No one cares what you know until they know that you care.

The only Bible some may ever read is you.

I d rather seen an exhortation than hear one any day.

Your performance must match your profession(verbal). Jim Cowie, MYC 2013

The stronger our faith is the more powerful will be our preaching. Bro Nigel Bernard The Testimony Magazine, June/July 2009, What Is Preaching? p. 120

Peter was a fisher of men, but he also had to feed the sheep. Bro Nigel Bernard & Bro Nicholas White, How Shall They Preach? The Testimony Magazine, June/July 2009, p. 118

Two Distinct Preaching Styles Matthew 11:16-19 John the Baptist Sang the dirge The Lord Jesus Played the flute Neither eating nor drinking Both eating and drinking Ascetic life isolated Social life integrated People came to him He went to the people Primary message: judgment of sin Primary message: forgiveness of sin Colours: Orange / Yellow Colours: Blue / Green

The Parable of the Philips A work in progress like all of us. Background Jesus calling Trying of Philip s faith More trying of Philip s faith After the ascension, one of the disciples Just one of the waiters, not a leader General Preaching Personal Preaching THE Evangelist Family John 1:43-46 John 6:5-7 John 14:8-9 Acts 1:12-15 Acts 6:1-6 Acts 8:5-13 Acts 8:26-40 Acts 21:8-10

You don t have to be a leader to be a preacher. You just need to be a committed follower.

Analysing Biblical Preachers Who was audience and what was their background? What is significant about the way that they began their teaching? What did they use as a starting point? What is significant about the way they presented their material? What assumptions did they make? What is significant about the way they ended their preaching/teaching? What was the follow up? Was the outcome satisfactory and did that affect their continuation of the preaching? Can you think of a comparison to a modern day situation and write down some similar modern tactics? What tools were required by the teacher/preacher? What similar tools do we need today?

Biblical Examples of Preachers New Testament Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch Peter on the day of Pentecost Acts 8:26-40 Acts 2:14-40 Paul on Mars Hill, Athens Acts 17:22-34 Abraham Genesis 14/18 Old Testament Joseph Genesis 39/41 The little maid that waited on Naaman s wife 2 Kings 5

20 Preaching and Teaching Tactics Smile! Be friendly! - Are you happy or not? Listen. No one likes one way conversations. Use what they say to your advantage. Patience Reason, not argue, with people who are willing to listen Rejoice over ONE who responds Show compassion, not judgment in your spirit Consistency Defend principles meekly and with respect Show conviction The power of personal testimony Find common ground Don t tear things down until you ve built things up Pray about it. Jesus will help you you are not alone Do not be anxious but confident in Jesus Try to use we and not you in your discussion Sit if possible do not talk down but with Use reasonable logic and clear points Don t be afraid to say, I m not sure how to answer that Validate any good points they make. Assure them you are listening. Ask them questions. Help them answer their own questions. Every person is a candidate for the gospel
