We need to continue to help educate and support the church s commitment to social needs and human dignity. We should try to discern the gifts god gave us so that it will help us join a ministry. there are so many to consider. to see the list of ministries in our region s parishes, check out each one s website. some ministries are described further below and have additional contact info. do you feel drawn to help and/or pray for the sick or suffering? do you like to provide meals to families who are facing physical or emotional hardships? Pa s t o R s R a m b l i n g s 4 1 2 3 4 5 40 hours DevOtiOn: every year i look forward to our weekend of 40 hours devotion. the st. cecilia Worship commission puts a lot of work into the liturgy and the reception. We were all so inspired by how many people adored each hour and also how many new adorers came to church during the day and overnight. the schoolchildren are a big part of the opening mass, and the altar servers did a wonderful job at the closing mass, as well (photos 1-5). 1 all SaintS PaRaDe: the annual all saints Parade is coming up next sunday, oct. 28, at st. cecilia s 10 am mass and st. anthony s 11:30 am mass. if your children would like to dress up as their favorite saints (photo 6) and be part of the opening procession for mass, please bring them to the back of the church 15 minutes prior to mass. if you still need ideas, check out www.catholicicing.com. 1 60th WeDDing anniversary: longtime st. cecilia parishioners ferd and evelyn Remenowsky (photo 7) recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. congratulations! 6 7

news & notes 5 stewardship our ongoing challenge as christians is to balance our lives so that we are open to the call of Jesus; serving him in spirit through our prayers, and in body through our deeds. We are the ones who must decide how to use our talents and gifts to serve him. What is a talent, then, and where is the connection with my faith? a talent is a natural way of thinking, feeling or behaving that can be productively applied. each of us has these natural aspects of ourselves that are planted deep within us by our loving god. Recognizing our talents is like glimpsing god s grace within us. once we have this insight, we will never be the same! it takes each of us doing what we can, being who we are, to have the impact we are called to have in our world. becoming aware of our talents is freeing. We become more understanding and forgiving of others, and of ourselves. We find a special pleasure in offering our true selves within our parish communities, at home, at work, and with friends. the bottom line is that the church is all of us. our parishes were built by us and are dependent upon all of us for survival. We depend on one another to do many of the things that keep them viable. everyone has a talent that can be used by his or her parish. it may be one that can be utilized yearly or hourly. We must decide which talents to share and the amount of time we will spend sharing them. the stewardship of ministry puts our faith and love into action. together, giving of ourselves to others for the glory of god in our own special ways makes a difference. Join us after the 10 am Mass this weekend for Doughnut Sunday at St. Cecilia. bring friends and family to mass and then come down to the commons for doughnuts and coffee. it s a great place to meet parishioners and catch up with friends. Annual St. Margaret-St. John Turkey Dinner Volunteers Needed! Offertory Gift Bearers at St. Cecilia We have started our new system for selecting the gift bearers at all the weekend masses at st. cecilia. before mass, there will be a crucifix on the table with the gifts in the center aisle. if your family, or you and a friend, would like to present the gifts at the offertory, please pick up the crucifix before mass begins. that will let the sacristans know that someone is committed to bringing up the gifts. if you are bringing up the gifts, please approach the gift table once the offertory hymn is introduced. Place the crucifix back on the table, and then wait there until the priest heads down from the sanctuary. then take the gifts to the priest at the head of the aisle, bow, and return to your pew. We hope that this new system will make it possible for a variety of people to assist at this part of the mass. Please join us on nov. 10, anytime from 8 am until noon, to help set up and cook the dinner for our annual turkey dinner on nov. 11. it s a wonderful way to meet people spending the morning talking and laughing while... peeling potatoes, getting cranberry sauce ready, setting up the cafeteria and other tasks for making this delicious dinner happen. We need many hands to make the work load lighter. Please contact mary mathers with any questions at marymathers@fuse.net or 513-271-0856. the dinner will be Sunday, nov. 11., from 3-7 PM. Cost is $9.00 for an adult and $5.00 for a child. Upcoming Young Adult Events adoration at st. cecilia this Wednesday, oct. 17, at 7 Pm followed by Madtree. e a s t s i d e fa i t h 6 Rcia this Week Please pray for all of those journeying to full communion with the catholic church! this week s Rcia lesson is WhO is JeSuS? Just a good Man or Lord of Our Lives? this session will cover: how, in the fullness of time, god has spoken to us through his son, Jesus how Jesus, the second Person of the trinity, took on human nature without losing his divine nature that Jesus is the one and only mediator between god and man that Jesus is one divine person who possesses two natures Why Jesus became man so that we can be reconciled to god and know god s love Questions for the week: Who is Jesus to you? how does the world and contemporary culture respond to the same question? What is the Hypostatic Union? Why is this aspect of Jesus so important? Jesus tells us to seek first his kingdom and his righteousness (matthew 6:33). What do you seek first in your life? do you truly put Jesus first in your life? To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program = Symbolon: Knowing the Faith ~ Session 5. With age-old love I have loved you; so I have kept my mercy toward you. Jeremiah 31:3 Catholic FAQs Was Jesus last name really Christ? We use the word christ after the name of Jesus so often some people may think that was his last name, like smith or Jones. but christ isn t a name; it s a title, meaning anointed one. it comes from the greek word Christos, which is a translation of the hebrew word for messiah. so when we say Jesus christ, we are really saying Jesus the messiah the one anointed by god to accomplish his plan of salvation. it is a mini-statement of faith, an acknowledgement that Jesus is truly the son of god. humanae vitae Studying the Past, Preparing for the Future Saturday, October 20, 2018 9 am - 4 PM the Ries Center at St. Peter s Church in Dayton humanae vitae ( of human life ) is an encyclical written by Pope Paul vi that re-affirmed the orthodox teaching of the catholic church regarding married love, responsible parenthood, and the rejection of most forms of artificial contraception. on the 50th anniversary of the publishing of this document, this conference will examine its lasting effects on theology, history, medicine, law, economics, ecology, pastoral perspective, and maternal perspective. lunch is available for $5 for those who reserve a spot online at www.daytonifc.org. Sponsored by the Dayton Institute for Faith and Culture Sacred heart Radio. 740 am 89.5 fm Deacons: Ministers of Service Liturgy of the Word (part 8 of 10) during the liturgy of the Word, as the gospel acclamation begins, the deacon stands in front of the priest, bows and asks, your blessing, father. the priest responds, may the lord be in your heart and on your lips that you may worthily proclaim his gospel. the deacon proceeds to the lectern with the book of the gospels, and incenses the book if appropriate. after the gospel, the deacon kisses the book from which the gospel is read. interestingly, if a deacon reads the gospel in the presence of a presiding bishop, he takes the book to the bishop for his kiss. deacons may also preach a homily, and in our archdiocese, are given faculties to do so one year after ordination. after the Profession of faith, the deacon announces the general intercessions (the petitions). Nathan Beiersdorfer is in formation to be ordained a permanent deacon for our region. god speaks in whispers and we live in a loud world. hearing god s voice amidst the noise and busy-ness of our lives can be difficult. but he is always there to guide and help us, and he has given us other people and resources to help us, as well. if you think god may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, call fr. dan schmitmeyer at 421.3131, ext. 2890.

focus on J ustice 7 The destruction of the human environment is extremely serious, not only because God has entrusted the world to us men and women, but because human life is itself a gift which must be defended from various forms of debasement. Every effort to protect and improve our world entails profound changes in lifestyles, models of production and consumption, and the established structures of power which today govern societies. Authentic human development has a moral character. It presumes full respect for the human person, but it must also be concerned for the world around us and take into account the nature of each being and of its mutual connection in an ordered system. Pope francis, laudato si st. francis Pledge october s st. francis feast day prompts us once again to reflect on how we care for the earth. st. francis s love and care for creation challenges us today, as we begin to see the grave effects of climate change. mindful of those who are already directly suffering from fires and floods, and aware of the need to protect the earth for those who succeed us, let us be firm in our response to this sign of the times. take the st. francis pledge to pray, live, and advocate laudato si. visit www.catholicclimatecovenant.org for more info. living the st. francis Pledge adjust your thermostat down 2 degrees in winter and 2 degrees up in summer, and you ll eliminate about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. st. anthony Parish center cleanup now that the rectory and church grounds have been landscaped, it s time to give some much-needed attention to the parish center yard. on saturday, oct. 27, volunteers are needed from 9 am until 4 Pm. you can sign up in the back of st. anthony church or just show up. there will be a general fall cleanup on nov. 17 and dec. 1. story corps, st. anthony style come together with others to remember the greatest church in madisonville, st. anthony! a committee of volunteers would like to hear from you and video record your experience of st. anthony. this sunday, oct. 14, video cameras and interviewers will be set up in the side room of the rectory between masses to record what you have to share about the past and recent past of the church. the stories will be compiled into a final video to capture the spirit of st. anthony parish.
