We speak of JESUS but who is He? 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 1

-- JESUS -- Prophet, Priest, King What is a prophet? What is a priest? What is a king? 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 2

As originally created by God, man was to be prophet, priest and king. As such, he was endowed with: knowledge and understanding [prophet ] righteousness and holiness [priest ] dominion, oversight of lower creation [king ] 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 3

As originally created by God, man was to be prophet, priest and king. As such, he was endowed with: knowledge and understanding [prophet ] righteousness and holiness [priest ] dominion, oversight of lower creation [king ] 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 4

As originally created by God, man was to be prophet, priest and king. (prophet) -- ignorance, blindness, error, untruthfulness, shame (priest) -- unrighteousness, guilt, moral pollution, failure, shame (king) -- misery, death, destruction, shame As such, he was endowed with: knowledge and understanding [prophet] righteousness and holiness [priest] dominion, oversight of lower creation [king] 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 5

A quick review! Jesus the PROPHET 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 6

As God/Prophet, Jesus is still in the business of forth telling and fore telling! In His unwavering love for me He is committed to my present and my future! 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 7

As Jesus the Prophet was anointed by the Spirit to be a herald and witness of the Father s grace, so are we to share the gospel (good news), so are we and given authority to proclaim the Truth, so are we 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 8

The author of Hebrews declared: Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. But now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son (Heb.1:1-2a) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 9

JESUS as PRIEST 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 10

Dictionary What is a priest? One authorized to perform the sacred rites of a religion esp. as a mediatory agent between man and God; specifically an Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, or Roman Catholic clergyman ranking below a bishop and above a deacon. 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 11

Definition of priest: Hiereus (Gr) one who offers sacrifice and has charge of things pertaining to them. In the NT it is used of: a priest of the pagan god Zeus (Acts 14:13) of Jewish priests (Mt.8:4) of believers (Rev.1:6) of Christ (Heb.5:6) of Melchizedek, as foreshadower of Christ (Heb.7:1,3) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 12

Hebrews 5 (1) Now a high priest is a man chosen to represent other human beings in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers their sacrifices for sins. (2) And because he is human, he is able to deal gently with the people, though they are ignorant and wayward. For he is subject to the same weaknesses they have. (3) That is why he has to offer sacrifices, both for their sins and for his own sins. 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 13

Hebrews 5 (4) And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He has to be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was. (5) That is why Christ did not exalt himself to become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him, "You are my Son. Today I have become your Father." (6) And in another passage God said to him, "You are a priest forever in the line of Melchizedek." 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 14

Hebrews 5 (7) While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could deliver him out of death. And God heard his prayers because of his reverence for God. (8) So even though Jesus was God's Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. (9) In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. (10) And God designated him to be a High Priest in the line of Melchizedek. 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 15

OT priests were appointed by God to: A offer sacrifices A offer prayers & praise to God on behalf others A sanctify the people making them acceptable to come into God s presence, albeit in a limited way. 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 16

6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 17

6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 18

In the NT Jesus becomes our great high priest: 1. Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice for sin 2. Jesus consistently brings us near to God 3. Jesus, as Priest, continually prays for us 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 19

In NT Jesus becomes our great high priest 1. Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice for sin For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins (Heb.10:4) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 20

Instead, Jesus offered himself as a perfect sacrifice But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself (Heb.9:26) This was a completed & final sacrifice, never to be repeated again! 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 21

Jesus fulfilled all the expectations that were prefigured, not only in the OT sacrifices, but also in the lives & actions of the priests who offered them. He was both the sacrifice and the priest who offered the sacrifice. 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 22

Jesus is now the great high priest who has passed through the heavens (Heb.4:14) and who has appeared in the presence of God on our behalf (Heb.9:24) since he has offered a sacrifice that ended for all time the need for any further sacrifices. 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 23

In the NT Jesus becomes our great high priest: (cont.) 2. Jesus consistently brings us near to God He leads us into God s presence so that we no longer have need of a Jerusalem temple, or of a special priesthood to stand between us and God 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 24

Therefore, we have a hope that follows him there: This confidence is like a strong and trust-worthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain of heaven into God s inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the line of Melchizedek (Heb.6:19-20) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 25

In the NT Jesus becomes our great high priest: (cont.) 3. Jesus as Priest continually prays for us Therefore, he is able, once and forever, to save everyone who comes to God through Him. He lives forever to plead with God on their behalf. [to make intercession for them] (Heb.7:25) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 26

In the NT Jesus becomes our great high priest: 3. Jesus as Priest continually prays for us He is the one who died for us and was raised to life for us and is sitting at the place of highest honor next to God, pleading for us. (Rom.8:34) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 27

Jesus the Priest (READ Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ, by John Piper, pgs 89-90) GRACE = receiving what I don t deserve MERCY = not receiving what I do deserve 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 28

Review: In the NT Jesus becomes our great high priest: 1. Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice for sin 2. Jesus consistently brings us near to God 3. Jesus as Priest continually prays for us 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 29

For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and people. He is the man Christ Jesus. (1 Tim.2:5) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 30

For Jesus to be our High Priest, He had to: Sacrifice His BODY For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. That is why Christ, when He came into the world And what God wants is for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time. (Heb.10:5-10) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 31

For Jesus to be our High Priest, He had to: Sacrifice His BLOOD But only the high priest goes into the Most Holy Place, and only once a year, and always with blood, which he offers to God to cover his own sins and the sins the people Once for all time he took blood into that Most Holy Place, but not the blood of goats and calves. He took his own blood, and with it secured our salvation forever. (Heb.9:7,12) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 32

For Jesus to be our High Priest, He had to: Experience DEATH He (Jesus) does not need to offer sacrifices every day like the other high priests. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he sacrificed himself on the cross. (Heb.7:27) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 33

THREE things: BODY BLOOD DEATH 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 34

HIGH PRIEST FOREVER! 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 35

BENEFITS He delivers from an evil conscience (10:22) Let us go right into the presence of God, with true hearts fully trusting him. For our evil consciences have been sprinkled with Christ s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. (10:22) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 36

BENEFITS He purifies from the stains of guilt (9:22) without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins. (9:22) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 37

BENEFITS He sanctifies (10:10) And what God wants is for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time. (10:10) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 38

BENEFITS He perfects (10:14) For by that one offering he perfected forever all those whom he is making holy. (10:14) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 39

BENEFITS He gives the privilege of access (4:16) So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it.. (4:16) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 40

BENEFITS He enables us to serve (13:15-16) With Jesus help, let us continually offer our sacrifice of praise to God by proclaiming the glory of his name. Don t forget to do good and to share what you have with those in need, for such sacrifices are very pleasing to God. (13:15-16) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 41

BENEFITS He enables us to worship (9:14) Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our hearts from deeds that lead to death so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. (9:14) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 42

THE PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST IS SUPERIOR! Hallelujah! 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 43

We have a great High Priest who has gone to heaven, Jesus the Son of God. Let us cling to him and never stop trusting Him. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it. (Heb.4:14-16) 6/3/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 44
