9/12/15 The High Priest. The high priest was the supreme religious leader of the Israelites. The high priest had to offer a sin offering not only for the sins of the whole congrega2on, but also for himself (Lev 4:3-21). When a high priest died, all those confined to the ci2es of refuge for accidently causing the death of another person were granted freedom (Numbers 35:28). The most important duty of the high priest was to conduct the service on the Day of Atonement. Only he was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place behind the veil to stand before God. Having made a sacrifice for himself and for the people, he then brought the blood into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it on the mercy seat, God s throne (Lev 16:14-15). He did this to make atonement for himself and the people for all their sins commiued during the year just ended (Exodus 30:10). 2
A problem on the day of atonement EXODUS 39 22 Then he made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of [o] blue; 23 and the opening of the robe was at the top in the centre, as the opening of a coat of mail, with a binding all around its opening, so that it would not be torn. FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST [n] LOTS. 3
John 19 23-24 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the [l] tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven [m] in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be ; this was to fulfill the Scripture: THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AN Matthew 26 62-68 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You? 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, I [t] adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are [u] the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus *said to him, You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, [v] hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN. 65 Then the high priest tore his [w] robes and said, He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think? They answered, He deserves death! 67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others [x] slapped Him, 68 and said, Prophesy to us, You [y] Christ; who is the one who hit You? Hebrews 9 11-14 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things [k] to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect [l] tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this crea2on; 12 and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, [m] having obtained eternal redemp2on. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanc2fy for the [n] cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through [o] the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse [p] your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 4
Royal Priesthood. But you are a chosen genera2on, a royal priesthood, a holy na2on, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light" (1 Peter 2:5-9). Ministry of reconcilia2on Sent. V18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. MaU 28:18-20 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the na2ons, bap2zing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. 11 Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice for [f] sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, 13 waiting from that time onward UNTIL HIS ENEMIES BE MADE A FOOTSTOOL FOR HIS FEET. 14 For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are [g] sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying, 16 THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS UPON THEIR HEART, AND ON THEIR MIND I WILL WRITE THEM, He then says, 17 AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE. 18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin. 5
