ALSO 10 When these people were in Egypt, they had not been a country.! They are freed from slavery, and God gives them laws to follow.! In Exodus 24, they become a new country by agreeing to follow God s laws.! Covenant STORYLINE 11 1. Wilderness: God helps his people even though they re grumpy.! 2. The Covenant: Ten Commandments, followed by lots more laws about how God expects his people to behave; promises of blessing if they re following them! 3. THEOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTION 13 First, Covenant; Second, Nation, Third, Legislation! Covenant: Exodus 24, The Hobos become God s people! Nation of Laws: You have to do all these things! Moral, Civil, and Ceremonial Laws, Tabernacle Laws! btw, we are the Israelites THEOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTION 14 Cycle of Sin and Redemption Starts:! 1. God loves us, we love God.! 2. We forget God and love sin.! 3. Bad things happen.! 4. We call out to God to rescue us.! 5. God rescues us and we repent.! (Remember we=israelites) SECULAR CONTRIBUTION 15

KEY VERSE 16 Exodus 19: 5 and 6! copy it from your Bible REQUIRED READING 17 Chapter 20, Chapter 24! 20 is the 10 commandments! 24 is the covenant, as Israel officially becomes God s chosen people! New Covenant in my Blood; we become God s chosen people, and are the heirs of the Abramic Covenant WHEN TO TURN HERE 18 God is not only holy but also merciful and patient. He remembers His people and His promises to their forefathers for a thousand generations.! See that the Lord still leads His people through the prophet Moses and redeems you by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus. (Jn 1:29, 36) LSB 95

LUTHER SAYS: 19 Although the Law does not justify, it is nevertheless extremely useful and necessary... Laws are useful for:! Civic Restraint what? 1. Keeping the Peace! Knowledge of ourselves as sinners 2. Show our Sins! Humiliation which leads to repentance which leads to grace 3. Show our Savior MR. MARTIN SAYS: 20 This blood is the new covenant?! Where s the old covenant?! Exodus 24! Blood, altar, people, God! = Communion?! What? LIFE LESSONS FROM Exodus 32: 4! EXODUS 24 THROUGH 40 It s so easy to laugh at the golden calf story.! Yet, if we were in the crowd, gathering gold for an idol, we just might, some of us at least, search for gold to help build the calf.! Why is it so easy to picture this whole story?! Why do we do this? Why do we fall into sin so readily?! How do you see the Cycle of Sin and Redemption in your life?! How can God help us out of these situations? 21
