THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS LUKE 4:1-4

Why is Jesus in the wilderness?

No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is.

After all, you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it, not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes

simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. C.S. Lewis

The Why Behind The wilderness

Why did he go: 1. He went to the wilderness for us.

Jesus would be of no value to us at the cross if He cannot conquer sin in the wilderness.

Romans 5:12 12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, in this way death spread to all men, because all sinned.

Romans 5:18-19 So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is lifegiving justification for everyone. 19 For just as through one man s disobedience the many were made sinners, so also

Romans 5:18-19 through the one man s obedience the many will be made righteous

Why did he go: 1. He went to the wilderness for us. 2. He went to the wilderness for God.

Luke 4:1-2 1 Then Jesus returned from the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness

Luke 4:1-2 2 for 40 days to be tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, He was hungry.

Two phrases: Full of the Holy Spirit

Two phrases: Full of the Holy Spirit Led by the Holy Spirit

Luke 4:1-3 1 Then Jesus returned from the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness

Luke 4:1-3 2 for 40 days to be tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, He was hungry.

Luke 4:1-2 3 The Devil said to Him, If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.

QUESTION: Are you a Christian?

QUESTION: What makes you a Christian?

options: a. I say I am a Christian. Therefore, I am a Christian.

options: b. I say I am a Christian, and I go to church. Therefore, I am a Christian.

options: c. I say I am a Christian, I go to church, and I do Christian things. Therefore, I am a Christian.

What makes you a Christian?

Romans 8:9 9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

Romans 8:12-17 12 So then, brothers, we are not obligated to the flesh to live according to the flesh,

Romans 8:12-17 13 for if you live according to the flesh, you are going to die. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Romans 8:12-17 14 All those led by God s Spirit are God s sons.

Romans 8:12-17 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, Abba, Father!

How do you know if you have the Spirit?

ANSWER: You have a new inner life.

A new inner life: The Spirit gives us a new attitude toward sin.

A new inner life: The Spirit gives us a new attitude toward sin. The Spirit gives us a new attitude toward righteousness.

Application 1. Be filled with the Spirit.

Luke 4:1 1 Then Jesus returned from the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.

Ephesians 5:18 18 And don't get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless actions, but be filled by the Spirit.

He led Him away from a high place.

He led Him away from a high place. He was led to the wilderness alone for 40 days.

He led Him away from a high place. He was led to the wilderness alone for 40 days. He was led by the Spirit to fast for 40 days.

He led Him away from a high place. He was led to the wilderness alone for 40 days. He was led by the Spirit to fast for 40 days. He was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan for 40 days.

Romans 8:14 14 All those led by God s Spirit are God s sons.

John 8:28-29 28 So Jesus said to them, When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own. But just as the Father taught Me, I say these things.

John 8:28-29 29 The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.
