Episode 4 ADAM AND EVE TODAY S FOCUS God Gives Us Freedom of Choice F.B.I. METHOD REENACTMENT PROOF TEXT Genesis 2, 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden? Genesis 3:1 God s Fingerprints Faith-Building Evidence for Leaders Science: William Lane Craig, PhD, ThD, Even atheist Kai Nielsen said, Suppose you suddenly hear a loud bang and you ask me, What made that bang? and I reply, Nothing, it just happened. You would not accept that. He s right, of course. And if cause is needed for a small bang like that, then it s needed for the Big Bang as well. This is an inescapable conclusion and it s a stunning confirmation of the millenniaold Judeo-Christian doctrine of creation out of nothing. (p.108) Scripture Where were you when I laid the earth s foundation? Tell me, if you understand, who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? BIBLE BRIEFING Target Practice Q. Is the Bible only one big book? A. No. The Bible is a library of books. Q. Why is the Bible so important to us? A. It s God Word, the source for truth, and His instruction book for man. Q. What does the Creation tell us about God? A. That He thought about and planned every detail before He began. Q. What did God say after He had created man? A. That it was all very good. Review the Findings We can study the Bible and see the big picture of God s plan since the very beginning the creation of all things, how man was the crown of God s creation, and the reason He made everything else first. Today we re going to look at one way man is different from the rest of creation. If you have a toy robot (or radio controlled toy) bring it to class, or borrow one from a student. Go to a separate table and have students stand nearby or sit on the floor. Demonstrate how we can make the robot do different things with the touch of a button. Use it to begin a discussion on the differences between people and robots. How are people like this robot? (It looks like a person, in a way. It moves, it does things.) How is it different? (It does what we tell it. It can t think on it s own. It can t choose. It can t feel.) Talk about how God made Adam and Eve, (and us), with free will, or freedom of choice. God didn t force them to obey Him, like we can with the robot. He wanted them to be able to choose whether they would or would not. Let s go to the Investigation Circle and read Genesis 3. We re going to see that the first people, Adam and Eve, were people just like us. They had the ability to choose right from wrong, just like we do. 2 Adam and Eve, Episode 4

BIBLE INVESTIGATION TIME: Examine the Evidence Read aloud Genesis 3. In order to investigate this further, we are going to watch a reenactment, to see if we can understand WHAT happened in the Garden of Eden and WHY God sent them out of the place He had especially made for them. TODAY S F.B.I. METHOD: REENACTMENT (DRAMA) Prepare your room ahead of time with appropriate props to make it look like a garden add some plastic fruit to your ficus tree, bring in some potted plants, etc. The more you can do to make it look like a garden, the better. Don t forget an attention-grabbing snake. You will need three adult actors for the parts. You can include students as you read through it. You will find the Reenactment Script at the end of this Episode on page 32. It is also a printable file on the CD. LIFE LAB This week let s think about the choices we make and about the consequences that come from our decisions. Some choices might be small, like what to eat for breakfast. Or they might be bigger, like whether to tell the truth. Stop and think about how God gave us the right to say Yes or No, and thank Him for that privilege. CONCLUSION WHAT happened here? (The first sin choosing to disobey God.) WHO was involved? (The devil, Eve, and then Adam.) WHAT right did Adam and Eve choose to use? (The freedom of choice.) WHAT were the consequences? (They were sent from the beautiful Garden of Eden. God told them they would have to work hard to make a living [the Bible says by the sweat of your brow ] and that women would have pain in bearing children. That they would grow old and die and return to the dust from which God had made them.) HOW did God punish the serpent? (God cursed him and made him crawl on his belly.) WHY did God not allow Adam and Eve to stay in the garden? (So they could not eat of the tree of life and live forever in their sins.) Look how one little act of disobedience has affected everyone who has ever lived. Talk about how our choices affect ourselves and those around us also. Adam and Eve, Episode 4 3

Put a copy for each Recruit in a sealed envelope with his or her name on it. Be sure to label it as Top Secret! Ask one of your volunteers to dress in disguise to deliver it near the end of class. They can use an outfit such as the black suit, trench coat, and sunglasses or be more creative if they wish. Recruits will take the Mission home and look up verses in the Bible to fill in the information. (It s okay to have help from family members on these assignments.) At the appropriate time next week you will ask for volunteers to share answers they found and add the names to a Most Wanted Poster or bulletin board you are making. Be sure you have stamped their assignment with MISSION ACCOMPLISHED and recorded their points. Praise them for completing this more challenging assignment. Episode 4 Faces of Sin E CORNER CREATIVE CORNER CREATIVE CORNER CREATIVE CORNER CREATIVE CORNER CREATIVE COR Materials one apple for each child apple peeler plastic knives or spoons small black beads, beans, or map pins for the eyes acrylic paint black, white, and red Assembly 1. The Leader or adult helper should peel each apple. 2. The Recruits use plastic knives or spoons to carve eye sockets, nose, mouth, and ears if desired. 3. Once carved, place the apples in an oven on its lowest temperature for three hours to help them dry. (This is optional. The apples can dry on their own, however the oven speeds up the process.) 4. Keep the apples sitting in a warm dry place until the next week. The apple heads will shrink very small; this is normal. 5. Once dried, the children can push black beans, beads, or map pins into the apples for eyes. 6. If you desire, you can paint eyebrows, lips, etc. on the face to give it more personality. Suggestions Small white beads can be used for teeth if desired. Glue in place, or use a straight pin and stick them into the apple. Note: Once completed, explain to the children that because of sin we have to grow old and one day die. Sin makes us ugly, like these dried up apples! F.B.I. Adam & Eve Deceived Eve strolls among the trees (one is labeled the Tree of Life and the other the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil ). She makes comments on the beauty of the Garden and how wonderful God is who made it. She mentions that Adam is still naming some of the things God has created, and she talks to the animals and flowers (these could be the students), telling them how beautiful and special each one is. Serpent (a large rubber snake or serpent puppet) comes into the Garden. Eve: Oh, who are you? I ve never seen you in here before! You certainly are beautiful! Serpent (coyly): Yes, I really am, aren t I! (never telling who he is, but playing up to her). You re beautiful, too! You re probably the loveliest thing in the whole creation! You know, you could be not only the most beautiful but the smartest and wisest, too! Eve: Oh, really? How could that happen? Serpent: It would really be easy. All you have to do is take a bite out of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and you will be just as wise as God! Eve:: Oh, no! I couldn t do that! God said that if we ate of that tree we would surely die! He told us we could eat of all the fruit in the Garden except for this one. He s been so good to us, you know, and I wouldn t want to disappoint Him! Serpent: Die? What s does that mean? Certainly God would not punish you for wanting to be smart and wise. (The Serpent takes the fruit from the tree and holds it out to her). Look and see how luscious and colorful and inviting He made it for you. Surely God wouldn t mind if you just tasted one! Eve looks at the fruit with desire. She holds out her hand tentatively while the serpent keeps cajoling her. Finally she takes it and bites into the fruit. Adam (enters): What have you done? Didn t the Lord tell us not to eat of that tree? Eve: Oh, Adam! This is delicious! And the Serpent here told me that we could be as smart and wise as God if we ate of it, and we would not surely die. God would not punish us for just tasting it! And it really is wonderful! Just take a little taste and see! Adam: Oh, all right, if it will please you! Mmmm! This is really good! At that moment, they look at each other and realize they are naked and they hide themselves in back of the trees (or chairs). God s voice: Adam! Eve! Where are you? Why are you hiding from Me? Adam: We re here, Lord! We re hiding because we are naked and ashamed! God: How did you know you were naked? Did you eat of the Tree that I commanded you not to eat? Adam: Well, the woman You gave to be with me tempted me with the delicious fruit! I took a bite just to please her. Eve: And the beautiful Serpent said that we would not surely die, that we could be smart and wise like You if we just took a bite. So I did, and I gave some to Adam, too! God (strongly): You have disobeyed Me! You have sinned against Me, and you cannot stay in the Garden any longer or you would be able to eat of the Tree of Life and live forever. I must send you out of the Garden into the world where you will have to work hard to make a living. There will be pain and heartache and hardships that will come, and from this day on, you will begin to die. But I will not leave you without hope, for one day I will send a Savior who will give His life to save you, and who will put down the Evil One forever. Now, go! Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth; take care of the animals and plants and all the things I have made for you. Do the things I have commanded you, and I will watch over you and bless you. (Adam & Eve sadly leave the Garden.) God (to the Serpent): From this time on, because you have allowed the Evil One to use you to cause one of My creation to sin, you will crawl around on your belly all the days of your life! (The Serpent slithers out on the floor). THE END F.B.I. Leader s Manual Copyright 2009 by 21st Century Christian. All rights reserved.
