diocese of BOISE OFFICE OF CATECHESIS The Office of Catechesis supports the mission of the Diocese of Boise by assisting the Bishop in carrying out his role as the chief catechist of the diocese. Catechist Certification Introduction to Catechesis: Sewing the Seeds of Faith Kathy Barkdull, Presenter

Planting Seeds Prayer It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the church s mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything.

It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end result, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own. This is what we are about: We plant the seed that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promises. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. Amen By Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. (Matt 28:19-30)

Discipleship: The Missionary Mandate of Jesus The Church exists in order to evangelize, that is the carrying forth of the Good News to every sector of the human race so that by its strength it may enter into the hearts of men and renew the human race. GDC 46

Discipleship: The Ultimate Goal of Catechesis Catechesis aims to bring about in the believer an ever more mature faith in Jesus Christ, a deeper knowledge and love of his person and message, and a firm commitment to follow him. NCD 1.19A

Catechesis From the Greek word katakein meaning to echo or to sound again. Catechesis is the process of transmitting the gospel.

Source of Catechesis Scripture Tradition The Magisterium

The word of God: source of Catechesis The source from which catechesis draws its message is the word of God: Catechesis will always draw its content from the living source of the word of God transmitted in Tradition and the Scriptures, for sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture make up a single sacred deposit of the word of God, which is entrusted to the Church. GDC 94

Sacred Scripture The speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit. GDC 96

Sacred Tradition Transmits in its entirety the word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. GDC 96

The Magisterium Has the duty of giving an authentic interpretation of the word of God, and in doing so fulfills, in the name of Christ, a fundamental ecclesial service. GDC 96

Object of Catechesis To develop an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ

Inspiration for Catechesis The Baptismal Catechumenate

Rite of Christian Initiation Precatechumenate the point of the first evangelization leading to conversion and the first proclamation of the Gospels. Catechumenate the context of fundamental catechesis beginning with the handing on of the Gospels. Purification and Enlightenment intense period of preparation for the sacraments of initiation and handing on of the Creed and Lord s Prayer. Mystogogy characterized by the experience of the sacraments and entry into the community.

Six Fundamental tasks of Catechesis 1. Promote Knowledge of the Faith 2. Participation in liturgical and sacramental life 3. Moral Formation 4. Teaching to Pray 5. Preparation and participation in community 6. Developing a missionary spirit

The Vocation of the Catechist The vocation of the laity to catechesis springs from the sacrament of Baptism. It is strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation. The Church awakens and discerns this divine vocation and confers the mission to catechize. The Lord Jesus invites men and women, in a special way, to follow him, teacher and formator of disciples. GDC 2 31
